Description

Oct. 14, 1930. I
C. RAMSTEAD FLAT RIM SINK Filed May 12, 1930 dial Zea ji'amiaad syn wanton Patented Oct. 14, v 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHARLES RAMSTEAD, OI OKMULGEE, OKLAHOMA FLAT-RIM SINK Application filed Kay 12,
This invention aims to provide a sink which will be unusually sanitary, since the drain boards may'be located flush with the top of the sink, the drainboards being supported on a flange of the sink, and it being possible to mount the sink in clean sanitary cabinet, 'at the will of an operator.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes may be made in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the'spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 shows in longitudinal section, a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a plan of the sink;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional detail of the sink.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a sink 1 made of any material now used in the construction of sinks. The sink 1 comprises a bod '2 having an outlet 3 located wherever desired. Around its entire rim, at its upper edge, the body 2 of the sink 1 is supplied with a head 4 carrying a depressed flange 5. A shoulder 6 is defined the flange 5. The upper surface of the flange 5 is parallel to'the upper edge 21 of the sink, the shoulder 6 being at right angles to the 'upper edge 21 of the sink.
1 The sink, constructed as described, and as shown in detail in Figures 2 and 3, ma be used in a wide variety of ways, depen ing upon the taste of the mechanic installing it, and the wishes of the person for whom the installation is made. If desired, the sink may be used in connection with a cabinet which, as a whole is marked by the numeral 7.
The cabinet 7 includes-corner posts 8 and intermediate posts 9 at the top and at the 1980- Serlal Ho. 451,727.
back. The posts8 and 9 extend downwardly to and rest on sills 10. The posts 8 and 9 extend upwardly and support top rails 11.. The top rails 11 are connected by intermediate cross pieces 12 and end cross pieces 14, II the upper surfaces of these cross ieces being flush with the upper surface of t e top rails 11. Against the corner osts 8 are secured end walls 15, one end wa 1 being omitted in the drawings. The end walls 15 may be made of'any desired material, su'ch as tile.
Dra'inboards 16.are mounted on the cross pieces 12 and 14 and are provided at their inner ends with reduced lips 17 resting on the flanges 5 of the body 2 of the sink 1, the flanges 5 of the body of the sink, in turn rest ing on the intermediate cross pieces 12, the body 2 extending downwardly between the cross piece 12. The drainboards 16 may be made of wood, but the word board is to be taken as indicating the shape of the parts 16, rather than, of necessity, the particular material out of which they are made. Rubber coverings 18, or coverings of any other suitable water-proof material, are mounted on and secured to the drainboards 16. The
coverings 18 and the lips 17 of the drainboards 16 extend up close to the shoulder 6 and may be cemented thereto. The upper surface of the coverings 18 is flush with the upper surface 21 of the body 2 of the sink, the combin'ed height of the lip 17 and the thickness of the covering 18 being equal to the height of the shoulder 6. Coverings 19, generally made of metal, are secured to the end walls 15, the end walls being made of tile, if desired.
In the angles formed by the upper edge of a the end wall 15 and the outer edge of the drainboard 16, finishingstrips 22 are secured, and these finishing strips 22 may be quarterrounds, having their outer surfaces flush with the outer surfaces of the coverings 18 and 19. The cabinet may include a front 20, and, if desired a back like the front 20. Around the extreme lower edge of the cabinet 6 may be placed 'a finishing strip 23.
The general construction is sanitary, watertight, and attractive, there being a tight joint where the top of the cabinet, represented by the drainboards 16 and the coverings 18, comes up against the shoulder 6.
Havin thus described the invention, what is claime is V 1. In a device of the class described, a sink provided with a depressed marginal flange defining a shoulder, a drainboard having a thinned lip resting on the shoulder, and a covering for the drainboard, the covering and the lip abutting against the shoulder, the combined thickness of the lip and of the covering being equal to the height of the shoulder, thereby rendering the upper surface of the covering flush with the upper edge of the sink.
2. In a device of the class described, a cabinet comprising cross pieces, a sink having a depressed marginal flange defining a shoulder, the flange restin on, the cross pieces, a drainboard supported on one of the cross pieces and provided with a thinned lip located above the flange, and a covering carried by the drainboard the covering and the lip abutting against the shoulder.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature.
CHARLES RAMSTEAD.
