5 Bertram Eaton Patented Oct. 14, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BERTRAM EATON, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO ARTHUR LATCHAM, F YORK, ONTARIO, CANADA, AND CLARK TAYLOR PURVIS, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO,
" CANADA SEWING MACHINE Application filed June 7, 1928. Serial No. 283,484.
I The principal objects of this invention are,
to provide a general utility form of machine which may be used for sewing flat or tubular articles and which may be very quickly changed to suit either purpose.
The principal feature of the invention consists in the novel construction of the bed frame and bed plate, whereby the major portion of the bed plate may be removed presenting an arm containing the bobbin and feed mechanism over which the tubular goods may be inserted.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved machine showing a portion of the bed plate removed, disclosing the arm structure for cylindrical sewing.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal mid-sectional view through the arm structure.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
In the ordinary types of sewing machines the bed plate is flat allowing only the sewing of flat goods thereon and where the cylindrical or tubular goods are to be machine sewn, special machines'ar'e provided wherein the operating mechanism is contained in an arm open at the end to allow the goods to be inserted thereover.
It is very desirable that'asewing machine be produced which will enable the ordinary V seamstress to sew tubular goods and this invention'has been produced to effect that result.
The bed plate 1 of the machine is of substantial T shape, the back portion 2 of which supports the standard 3 carrying the needle operating mechanism. The forwardly extending portion is preferably centrally arranged and extending downwardly therefrom are the parallel side walls 4:. These side walls areformed with a longitudinal ledge 5 level with'the under side of the back portion 2.
The back portion 2 is adapted to rest upon a suitable frame 6 and'vertical webs 7 extend laterally from the walls 4 beneath the portion structure 10 which is provided with a forwardly extending foot 11.
A sheet metal bottom plate 12 is secured to the bottom edges of the side walls 4 and extends underneath the standard 3 having at the rear portion beneath said standard an upward flange 13 provided with an inturned edge 1 1; I
This structure completes the bobbin arm upon the top of which is secured the throat plate 15 through which the feed dog 16 extends.
This structure is complete forthe purpose of receiving and operating upon tubular forms of goods but when fiat goods are to be sewn it is desirable to have a flat bed plate. A plate 17 is formed with a longitudinal slot extending inwardly from one end and the said plate rests upon the ledges 5 fitting snugly tothe central portion of the bed plate 1 and having the ends abutting the forward edges of the back portion 2.
The plate 17 is preferably provided with lugs 18 adapted to extend under theportion 2 of the mainbed plate to hold it firmly in place. The plate 17 extends forward of the throat plate and is provided with an opening 19 closed by'a slide plate 20 of the usual form which enables the operator to reach in to manipulate the bobbin which is carried in the holder 21 on the main shaft 9.
- The gate 22 is pivotally supported upon the foot-11 and is held in a vertical position against the holder 21 to hold the bobbin in p ace.
When the plate 17 is in position, a broad fiat surface isprovided to support the goods being operated upon but when it is desired to sew a tubular member the plate 17 is merely lifted upwardly from the supporting frame 6 and drawn forwardly, thus leaving a projecting arm in the center of the recess of the frame.
A machine as thus described is-extremely simple in its construction and may be handied without difficulty by the ordinary user.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A sewing machine comprising a frame support having a rectangular opening in the top, a bed frame formed with lateral flanges resting on the top of said frame support at one endof said opening having the major portion of said opening uncovered and havlng an extension formed with downwardly extending side walls disposed centrally ofwsa d uncovered portion of said opening, a bottom plate secured to said sides and with said sides and top forming an enclosure for the bobbin and feed mechanism, and a unitary bed plate.
' having a slotextending in from. one end thereof and adapted to fit snugly to and rest on the side wall extension of the bed frame to complete the closing of the frameopening.
2. A sewing machine, comprising, an open. frame, a bed frame resting upon one end of said open frame andhaving a central extension formed with downwardly extending side walls, said side walls'forming longitudinal ledges, transverse walls extending laterally V from-the side walls beneath the bed frame, a bottom plate closing the arm formed by the extension from the bed frame, a bed plate slotted to fit around the extension and adapted to rest upon the ledges in the sides thereof,
the ends of said plate each side of the slot abutting the top of the bed frameand having lug extensions extending under said plate, and a slide plate arranged in the end of the removable bedplate ,to give access to the bobbin. mechanism. 3. In a sewing machine,'a frame having a plane top and an opening therein, a bed plate fitting flat on said plane top at one'end of said frame opening, said plate having a frame portion, andan extensionmember extending centrally toward and terminating short of the oppositeend of said top opening and carrying the bobbin and feed mechanism, said extension member having a longitudinal recess in each side forming shoulders on the same plane as said top, and a single U-shaped flat plate havi g its inward marginal portion resting on the longitudinal shoulders of said extension member-and having its outer marginal. portion resting onsaid frame top. 4:. In asewing machine, a main frame, a bedfra-me supported in said main frame and having an extension carrying the shuttle mechanism at the 'end thereof, a unitary bed plate slotted inwardly from one end to snugly receive said bed frame extension, the slot in saidbed plate terminating beyond the end extremity of said frame extension to provide accessto the shuttle'mechanism carried by Y the latter, and a removable plate on the unslotted portion of said bed plate adapted to closesaid bed slot between its terminalend and the end extremity of said frame exten sion, I c c B'ER RAM EATON.
