IMPROVEMEN T IN ENVELOPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,714, dated May 23, 1876; application filed April 4, 1876.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS P. HAYS, of Donegal, Westlnoreland county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Letter-Envelope,of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a margin on the right hand of the envelope,,to receive the stamp and enable it to be canceled by punching without injury to the letter, the two thicknesses of paper forming themargin. being pasted together, so as to prevent the contents of the envelope from entering the margin. The extended margin is also designed to facilitate the opening of the letter by tearing off the end, for which it affords facilities not possessed by the ordinary envelope. Another object is to indicate to persons not familiar with the rule of the Post-Office Department respecting the location of the stamp, the place to put it.
Figures 1 and 2 are plan viewsot' an envelope constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 3 is a diagram of the form of paper suitable for folding up into an envelope of my invent-ion.

A is the envelope proper, and Bis the margin of the right-hand end, which I propose to provide for receiving the stamp. This margin will form an exterior extension of the envelope, and may be creased, folded, or punctured at the connecting-line with the envelope proper, to facilitate tearing it off to open the letter. It may have the word Stamp printed on it to indicate where the stamp is to be placed.
The envelope is formed of the blank cut as represented in Fig. 3-that is, the blank is provided with the portion B, forming the margin for the stamp, which portion B has end tongues or extensions a, that are turned down upon the side flap of the envelope outside of the closing flap, as is shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The envelope herein described, formed of a blank having the portion B, with extensions or tongues a, as and for the purpose set forth.
