My present invention relates to a new and improved protecting device and more particularly to a device, for protecting pipes during the operation of coating the same with paper and like material.
The. object of my nvention is to provide. a novel type of protecting means for use, in connection with pipe-wrappingmachines which may be readily, and conveniently ap'-- plied to the pipe while it is in motion.
A further object of my invention is to provide in a pipe-protecting device constructed in two halves, a novel means for securing thehalves together upon the pipe while the pipe is in motion.
Another object of my inventionjis to provide upon a pipe-protecting means forprotecting wrapped pipes'when supported upon a moving'dolly, a novel arrangement where- :o by the pipe-protecting means may be readily applied when the pipe is placed upon the dolly and which will also retain the dolly in co-operative relation with the protecting means. 7 I i In a prior Patent, Number-1,572,258Qissued to C. F. Nieland et al., Febr-uaryfl, 1926, there is disclosed a machine for continuously wrapping lengths of pipe in a spiral manner with' paper and/or other so weather proofing material. In connection with the operation ofthis machine, it is customary to provide a number of dollies upon which the pipe is supported in being fed to and taken from the machine. After the pipe iswrapped, it has been found that the wrapping isoften damaged by reason of the wrapping, while still soft, being out into by the rollers upon the supporting dolly and, in order to providea means for protecting o the Wrapped i against such damage, I
propose,- bymy present invention, to provide a means which will cooperate with the pipesupporting dolly and-protect the wrapping 3 or other coating against injury. The provision of such a protecting means upon the pipe presents several problems, one of which is the application of the protecting means to the pipe while it is in motion; and a further LU problem is in the securing of the protecting device in a semi-permanent manner upon the pipe after it has been placed in position.
In order to provide a protecting device in which the aboveproblems are overcome in a practical, simple and efficient manner, I propose to hinge together a. pair of semi-cylindrical members so that they may be. opened up to receive the pipe and then closed so as to completely surround the same. In connec tion with these. two semi-cylindrical memhers, I also provide. a flap of flexiblemates rial upon one of the members which. will overlap the joint at their meeting edges so that in this manner the protecting sleeve so formed will be retained upon the pipe at the point ,where the pipe rests upon the dolly. For a better understanding of my inven: tion, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein I have shown by way of illustration and not of limitation, a preferred form of myinvention.

In order to protect the wrapping 15 against injury by the rollers 11 upon the dolly 10, there is shown a sleeve member 16 which extends completely around the wrapping 15 at the point where the latter engages with the rollers 11.
By referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the sleeve or protecting member 16 is constructed in two halves or of two semi-cylindrical members. The members 16 in this particular embodiment of my invention are shown as having flanges 17 at their ends and at one and the meeting ends of the corresponding flange member 17 there is provided a pair of hinges 18 which serves to hold the two semi-cylindrical members in hinged engagement so that they may be opened to receive a pipe and then be closed so as to completely surround the pipe.
In order to retain the two semi-cylindrical members in their closed position about the pipe, I provide upon one of the halves, a flap 19 which is preferably of some flexible material. This flap is permanently riveted at one end of one of the semi-cylindrical members so that its free end will flap or overlap over the corresponding and ad jacent meeting end of the other semi-cylin drical member and thus, as will hereinafter appear, retain the complete sleeve upon the pipe so that the wrapping 15 thereupon will be protected against injury.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings the semi-cylindrical members 16 are shown as extended about their hinged connection 18 so as to receive a pipe and the flanges 17 are shown as overhanging the ends of the rollers 11 upon the dolly 10 so as to retain the protecting sleeve in co-operation therewith. IVhen the parts of the sleeve are in the position as shown, the flap 19 will be thrown back so that the free edges of the semi-cylindrical members 16 may meet and as the pipe, together with the sleeve 16, is rolled or rotated upon the rollers 11, the flap 19 will trail over the rollers 11 and overlap the joint between the halves in such a manner that they will be held in their closed position and tightly about the pipe.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, the protecting sleeve 16 is shown as closed upon the pipe 14:, the flap 19 being wrapped thereabout so as to firmly hold the edges of the sleeve in place upon the pipe.
From the above, it is believed that the operation of my improved device will be readily understood and a further descrip tion as to the operation thereof is, therefore, thought to be unnecessary.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention as now known to me, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in its construction without departing from the spirit of the invention as delined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A device for protecting rolling cylindrical articles comprising a pair of semicylindrical members, a hinge connecting said semi-cylindrical members at one of their edges, and a flap of flexible material secured to the free edge of one of said semi-cylindrical members for retaining them in the form of a cylinder when the members are in place upon the article to be protected.
2. A device for protecting wrapped pipe in the process of manufacture, comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical members adapted to engage the pipe at predetermined points, and a flap of flexible material adapted to overlap the joint between said semi-cylindrical members and retain them in position upon the pipe as the latter is rotated upon its supports substantially as described.
3. A protective device of the character described comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical members having flanges extending around their ends, a hinged joint between said semioyl-indrical members whereby they may be opened to receive a cylindrical article, and a flap of flexible material having a width equal to the length of said semi-cylindrical members adapted to overlap the joint at their point of meeting and co-operate with said hinges to retain said members upon the article to be protected. 4;. A protective device of the character described comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical metallic members having flanges extending around their ends, a hinged joint formed upon the flanges of said semi-cylindrical members whereby they may be opened to re ceive a cylindrical article, and a flap flex-- ible material having a width equal to the length of said semi-cylindrical members adapted to overlap the joint between said flanges at their point of meeting opposite said hinges for retaining said members upon the article to be protected.
5. In the art of pipe wrapping and coating, the combination of a dolly adapted to support a pipe, a metallic protecting sleeve adapted to be placed about the wrapped pipe to protect it against injury as it is rotated upon said dolly, and flanges upon said protecting sleeve adapted to retain the dolly in eo-operative relation with said sleeve.
