To all whom it may concern:

ing the edges thereof and for forming a compartment in which material used in connection with the roll may be stored, and has for its object to provide a wire extending through the chamber of the roll and provided with portions outside the caps for the reception of 'a twisting tool, whereby the caps may be securely tied together.
A further object is to provide the ends of the wire with transversely disposed U- shaped members having their outer arms longer than their inner arms and extending through elongated apertures in the caps and adapted to receive a twisting tool whereby the ends of the wire may be twisted around the long arms of the U-shaped members for tying the caps together and holding the same in position. The elongated apertures allow the U-shaped members to be'worked through the caps.
A further object is to form the wires sufliciently long whereby a portion thereof may wrap around the'long arms of the U-shaped members during a twistingoperation.
\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts ashereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention maybe made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a fabric roll, showing the device applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through one of the caps showing one end of the wire extending therethrough and ready to receive the twisting tool.
Figure 3 is a view in elevation of one of the caps, showing the end of the wire twisted. for holding the cap in position.
Figure 4 is a plan view of one of the U- shaped members carried by one end of the wire .and showing a twisting tool thereon.
Figure 5 is a viewsimilar to Figure 4, but showing one of the U-shaped members partially twisted.
Figure 6 is a view in side elevation of one of the U-shaped members, showing the same with a twisting tool applied thereto and after being twisted.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a roll of material, for instance of roofing material, and 2 the chamber thereof which extends entirely through the roll. In present practice the necessary material, such as nails, is placed in the coinpartment 2, so that when the roll reaches the consignee all of the necessary material for applying the roofing is within the chamber 2. It has been found that rolls of this character become damaged, and ,to obviate this difliculty the dished caps 3 are provided, which caps have cylindrical portions 4 extending into the ends of the chamber 2 and annular flanges 5 which engage the ends of the roll for protecting the same, which caps are at present used and tied together. The tmng devices for tying caps together as at present constructed are complicated and are either formed from heavy material or constructed in a manner whereby the variations and distance between the caps will not be taken care of in a manner whereby the caps will be positively held in close enformed by bending the ends of the wire.
The outer arms 8 of the U-shaped members 7 are longer than the inner arms 9 thereof, therefore it will be seen that when the twisting tool 10 is applied to the U-shaped members 7 as shown in Figure 4 and the twisting tool rotated the long arms 8' of the U- shaped members 7 will be moved into engagement with the ends of the wires 6 and the continued rotation of the twisting tool 10 will twist the ends of the wires 6 around the long arms 8, consequently the wires 6 may be drawn taut with the twisted ends thereof in close engagement with the outer faces of'the caps 3 as shown in Figure 1,
thereby securely holding said caps in the of the wires 6 extend through elongated slots 11 in the caps 3, which elongated slots allow the caps 3 to be worked into position by the movement of the cap or by the movement of the U-shaped members 7 for working the U-shaped members through the apertures 11. If so desired one of the U-shaped members 7 may be twisted before assembling, and a single end twisted after the caps and wire have been assembled. By having elongated arms 8, it is obvious that during the twisting operation the U-shaped members will not be reduced in length so that they would pull through the apertures ll as would be the case it the loop were longitudinally disposed in relation to the wires 6.
From the above it will be seen that a tying device is provided for end caps of fabric roll protectors, which tying device is provided with transversely disposed U- shaped loops at the ends of a wire extendin through theroll, which loops may receive a twisting tool whereby the U-shaped loops may be rolled or twisted onto the ends of the wire and into close and binding engagement with the caps thereby positively holding the caps in position and in close engagement with the ends of the roll. be seen that the capsmay be easily and quickly removed by applying a twisting tool to the twisted portions of the wire and untwisting the same, or by cutting ofi the ends of the wire with a cutting tool.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a roll of material having a chamber extending thereth'rough, caps engaging the ends of said roll, of a member extending through said chamber and through the caps, the ends of said member being provided with transversely disposed Ushaped portions-twisted upon the ends of the member and into engagement with the outer faces of the caps.

The combination with a roll of materialhaving a chamber extending therethrough, caps carried by the ends of the roll, of a wire extending through said caps and chamber, the ends of said wire being provided with transversely disposed U- shaped portions, the outer arms of said U- shaped portions being longer than their inner arms whereby when the U-sha'ped portions are twisted, the ends of the wire will be twisted around the long arms oi the-U- shaped port-ions.

The combination with a roll of material having a chamber extending therethrough, caps carried by the ends of the roll, of a wire extending through an elongated aperture of one of the" caps and anchored to the other cap, the end of said wire which extends through the elongated aperture of oneof the caps being provided with a transversely disposed li -shaped portion adapted to be twisted onto the end of the wire and into engagement with the adjacent cap.

The combination with aroll of material having a chamber extending therethrough caps carried by the ends of the roll a wire extending through an enlar ed aperture of one of the caps and anchored to the other cap, the end of said wire being provided with a transversely disposed U- shaped portion adapted to be twisted in a transverse position onto the end of the wire and into engagement with the adjacent caps.

The combination with a roll of material having a chamber extending therethrough, caps carried .by the ends of the roll, a wire extending through an enlarged aperture of one of the caps and anchored to the other cap, said wire having its end provided with a transversely disposed U- shaped portion, the outer arm of said U- shaped portion being longer than the inner arm, said U-shaped portion being adapted to be twisted in a transverse position onto the end of the wire with the end of the wire twisted around the long arm thereof:

The combination with a roll of material having a chamber extending therethrough, caps engaging the ends of said roll, of a member extending through said chamber and connected to one of the caps, the other end of said member extending through the other cap and provided with a transversely disposed U-shapcd portion twisted upon the end of the member and into engagement with the outer face of the adjacent cap.
8. The combination with a roll of material having a chamber extending therethrough, caps carried by the ends of the roll, of a wire extending-through said chamber one end of said wire being anchored to one of the caps, the other end of the wire extending through the outer cap, said last named end of the wire being provided with a transversely disposed Ushaped port-ion. the outer arm of said ti -shaped portion being longer than its inner arm, whereby when the U-shaped portion is twisted the end of the wire will be twisted around the long arm of the U-shaped portion.
