IMPROVEMENT IN MUSICAL TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,706, dated May 23, 1876; application filed April 10, 1876.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, Mrs.ELLA N. GAILLARD,
I of the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented a new and Improved Musical Top, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a musical box located in the hollow chamber of a top, and having stop mechanism to its running-gear, contrived to be released automatically when the top spins, and connected when it stops so that the music will be given while the top spins, and will cease when the top ceases to spin.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved top, taken on lineXXof Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of Fig. l on the line Y Y; and Fig. 3 is a detail section on line Z Z.
A represents the hollow case which comprises the top, in which I arrange a small spring-and-barrel musical instrument, B, of any known or approved kind, to be operated by its own spring, which may be Wound by a key introduced through an opening in the case into the tube 0 surrounding the Winding-stud, or in any other approved way.
With the regulating-fly D of the music-box I combine a weighted pawl-lever, E, and a spring, F, the lever being arranged in such a manner that when the top spins the centrifugal force of the weighted pawl of the lever will detach it from the regulating-fly of the music-box, and allow the latter to run, and as soon as the top ceases to spin, and the centrifugal action ceases, the spring will pull the lever back into connection with the regulator and stop the music.
I do not limit myself to the particular arrangement of stopping and releasing mechanism here shown, as the same can be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I propose in practice to construct the shell of the top of metal, wood, paper, or any other approved material.
I may use bells or chimes in place of the music-box here shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A musical instrument, located in a spinningtop, and having combined with it stop mechanism that releases and allows it to run when the top spins, substantially as herein shown and described.
