Description

Se i. 30, 1930:
A.A.BREUER coma-man BLOWER Min SUCTION nmvzcs Filed Oct. 7, 1929 Patented Sept. 30, 1930 UNITED STATES ADAM A. BRETJ'ER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS V COMBINED BLOWER, AND suc'rron Davies,
Original application filed June 16,1927,
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a handle for such a device or apparatus so arranged that its gripping portion is parallel to the aXis of the discharge nozzle and placed over the heavier part of the device in order to more easily balance the device when in use.
Above, other and further objects of the in-,
vention will be apparent from the following description, accompanying drawings and appended claims.
This application is a. divisionof coending application, Serial No. 199,193, filed une 16, 1927. a
An embodiment it the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and the views thereof are as follows:
Figure 1 is a fragmental top plan view of the illustrated embodiment of the invention, showing the same arranged as a suction cleaner.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the device arranged as a blower.
Figure 3 is an end elevationof the illustrati on of Figure 1, with certain parts removedandwith the apparatus tilted at an angle.
The invention is illustrated in connection with a combined blower and suction apparatus or device which includes a fan casing 1 having an axial air inlet port 2 and a tangential air discharge port 3.
A motor casing 4, is secured to the fan casing 1 on the side opposite the air inlet port 2. The motor casing is secured by means of bolts or screws 5, or like attaching means.
The air inlet port 2 may have connected to it by any suitable connection a suction hoset, at the free end of which is provided asuction nozzle, while the air discharge port 3 may have connected to it a dirt bag 7 for collecting the dirt received through the suction hose 6, or, if the device is to be used as a blower, then an air discharge nozzle 8, preferably tapering toward the free endthereof,
is provided at the discharge port 3.
apparatus will be light and readily usable;
Serial No. 198,193. Divided and iii-se arated filed 0cto ber 7,
Serial No. serene. I
A screen 9 may be interposedoverthe air inlet' port 2 for purposes well understood."
Preferably, the fan casing 1 and the motor casingt are made of aluminum, so thatthe PATENT OFFICE The suction hose 6 may be secured to the air inlet port 2 by a bayonet joint or any other suitable manner, while the dirt bag 7 or the nozzle 8 may be secured to the air discharge port 3 in like manner. V
This device is susceptible of selectiveuse as a blower or as a suction cleaner.
A handle, including a gripping portion 10 and end legs 11 and 12", is secured to or cast integrally with themotor casin'ga. The illustrated fOllliOf the invention shows the handle attached to the motor casing by means of screws 13 passing through apertured lugs 14 of the handle; The middle of the handle is preferably placed over the axis *of the motor. v r 3 The gripping portion 10 is made hollow to accommodate a snap switch operable outwardly or" the handle by means of alever 15 for controlling the motor circuit. Said lever 15 projects through a slot 16 in the handle.
.One of the legs 12 of the handle is provided with a slot 17 which slot extends length wise of the leg for the reception of a strap 18passing through said slot and which serves weight of the sameabout the axis of the mo-y tor. v r
Figure 1 illustrates a device when arranged as a vacuum clcaner'with the'suctiou hose 6 connected to the air inlet port 2 and a dirt bag 7 connected tothe air discharge port 3.
The screen 9 may be used when the device is used as a suction cleaner as well as a blower.
However, it is preferable to eliminate the plate 9 when the apparatus is used as a suction cleaner.
Figure 2 illustrates the appearance of the machine when used as a blower with the nozzle 8 applied at the air discharge port 3. The nozzle is removably attached to the fan casing 1 by abayonet joint or any other suit able connection.
The gripping portion 10 of the handle, being tangential to the blower nozzle 8, allows greater ease in the manipulation of the apparatus and also aids in directing the discharge nozzle more uniformly. Furthermore, it adds to the balance effect of the whole structure.
The perforated plate may be suitably arranged in the air intake port 2 for ready removal and insertion as desired. I
The invention has been described herein more or less precisely as to details, yet it is not to be limited thereby, as changes may .be made in the arrangement and proportion of parts and equivalents may be substituted without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
' The invention is claimed asfollows:
A portable convertible blower comprising in combination, a motor casing, a fan casing,
said fan casing having an air inlet port and a tangentially arranged air out-let nozzle, a D-handle attached to the motor casing, said handle consisting of a hollow gripping portion and two legs, said handle being attached to the motor casing with the gripportion thereof parallel to said tangentially disposed outlet, :1 switch in said hollow gripping portion, a switch-operating lever projecting from said grip port-ion ahead of the rear leg of said handle, said handle having a longitudinally extending strap slot in its rear leg and Y a strap in said slot for supporting the weight of said device in use, saidhandle serving as means for directing the tangent1al outlet toward a work piece, the strap supporting the blower in use and enabling the utilization of p the handle solely as means for manipulating the device in use.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name at Chicago, Cook county,
Illinois.
