ROTARY PUMP AND THE LIKE Filed Sept. 19, 1928 Patented Sept. '23, 1930 MAX G. ROSENTHAL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS ROTARY PUMP AND THE LIKE Application filed September 19, 1928. Serial No. 306,793.
This invention relates to that type of rotary motors, pumps, meters and the like, in which the rotor member carries a series of sliding piston blades, adapted for sliding con- 8 tact with the inner face of the eccentrlcally disposed chamber of the stator member of the appliance, an example of which is shown in my prior Patent No. 1,569,306, dated January 12, 1926, and this improvement has for its ob- 10 ject.
To provide a structural formation and combination of parts in the above mentioned type of rotary apparatus, by means of whlch a durable and efiicient fluid tight joint is maintained between the contact ends of the radial piston blades of the rotor member in their eccentric travel around and in contact with the closed here or chamber of the stator member, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. l, is a transverse section of a rotary pumpor the like apparatus embodying the preferred form of the invention. I Fig. 2, is a fragmentary horizontal sectlon of same, on line 22 Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a fragmentary sectional elevatlon of the central portion of a pump or like apparatus illustrating a modified construction of parts.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
In the construction shown, the stator member 1 is of any usual form, having central piston chamber, approximately circular in cross section for the greater portion of its extent, with such portion merged into a segmental portion of less extent and in which the rotor member has bearing.
In addition said stator member is formed with passages 2 and 3, for the inlet and outlet of fluid to and from its piston chamber, and is also provided with closure heads 4, for the respective ends of such piston chamber.
The rotor member 5, of the usual cylindrical form, is arranged eccentrically in the piston chamber of the stator member 1, and in close contact with the above described segmental portion of said piston chamber. In addition the rotor member is formed with a plurality of substantially radial recesses 6, for the reception and movement of the piston members of the s tructure. The construction-so far described in common to the present class of rotary pumps and the like, and is fully disclosed in 1,569,306.
my aforesaid Patent No.
The novel and material feature of this improvement involvesa specific formation of the outer and bearing en a structure such as means of which a cl contact between the blades and the inner ton chamber of the tained in a simple and such end the inventi on involves broadly, the
formation of the outer end of each piston blade by a plurality associated together in and slidingly arranged an aforesaid radial r of thin plates 7, loosely side by side relation, in the outer portion of ecess 6 of the rotor member 5 and having a length equal to that of said rotor member.
Each plurality of scribed are capable thin plates 7 above deof independent sliding movement, one upon the other, in order that their outer ends may move to and maintain close contact with curved surface of the piston chamber of stator member, in the eccentric relation of said piston chamber to the rotor member and th thereby. plurality face of which has a c e piston blades carried To such end the inner ends of each of thin plates 7 will have support or abutment on a rocke r member 8, the bearing urvature of a radius substantially the same as the circular inner wall of the piston chamber.
The rocker member 8 is in turn pivotally mounted on a spring 9, the tendency of which is to move the rocker member outwardly and maintain the plurality of thin plates 7 in close operative contact with the inner face of the piston chamber;
the rocker member 8, being adapted to have a rocking movement on the spring 9, to permit of an independe tween the plurality maintain the required f sliding movement be- 0 thin plates 7 as they continued contact of their outer ends with the curved surface of the piston chamber,
under the stress of the s ring 9. For heavy duty, the plurality of ed to contain said plurality of plates and p ates 7, associated rocker 8 and spring 9 rocker member.
are preferably arranged in a holder 10 of a In testimony whereof I hereunto ailix my channel shape in cross section, moving in a signature. radial recess 6 of the rotor member, with each 1 MAX G. ROSENTHAL. holder 10 provided with track rollers 11 at their respective ends for engagement in cam grooves 12 in the end heads 4 of the stator member.
The aforesaid cam grooves 11 will have a shape corresponding to the shape of the inner curved surface of piston chamber of the stator member 1, as set forth in my prior Patent No.
1,569,306, above referred to. p 15 For light duty the entire sliding movement of the plurality of thin lates 7 and their supporting rocker 8, may e effected wholly by the spring 9 upon which said rocker is plvotally mounted. In such construction, each I rocker 8 will be pivotally mounted on a slid- I ing plug 13 with a single spring 9 interposed between the ends of a diametricall opposed pair of the plugs 13 associated roc ers 8 and pluralities of plates 7 as illustrated in Fig. 3. 25 I claim as my invention:
1. In a rotary pum or motor of the radially moving'type 0 piston, the combination of a stator having a circular piston chamber, a rotor having a recess extending its en- 30 tire length, a piston blade associated with said recess and comprising a plurality of thin plates in close slidlng contact one with the other, and a rocker memberforming a common bearing for the inner ends of said plates, 35 the bearing face of said rocker member having a curvature the same as the curvature of the inner wall of the piston chamber of the stator.
2. In a rotary pump ormotor of the ral4o dially moving piston type, the combination of a stator having a circular piston chamber, a rotor having a recess extending its entire length, a piston blade associated with said recess and comprising a plurality of thin 45 plates in close sliding contact one with the no other, a rocker member forming a common bearing for the inner ends of said plates, the bearing face of said rocker member having a curvature the same as the curvature for the 50 inner wall of the piston chamber of the stator,
and a spring forming'a yielding abutment for said rocker member.
3. In a rotary pump or motor of the radially moving piston type, the combination of a 5 stator having a circular piston chamber, a
rotor having a recess extending its entire length, a piston blade associated with said recess and comprising a plurality of thin plates in close sliding contact one with the other, a rocker member forming a common bearing for the inner ends of said plates, the bearing face of said rocker member having a curvature the same as the curvature of the inner walls of the piston chamber of the stano 65 tor, and a holder of a channel form and adapt- I
