TTNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. TALLY, OF ROOKFORT, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-BUILDING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,587, dated May 16,1876; application filed March 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. TALLY, of Rockfort, in the county of Aransas and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Building Machine, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a portable machine comprising a pile-driving apparatus, with a portable attachment for making the holes and driving in the posts; also, a boring attachment for deep holes, and also wire-drums for carrying and delivering wires for the wire fence or telegraph-wires, all as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved machine, taken on line as x of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the pile-driver and post-hole attachment, and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the boring attachment for deep holes.
Similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts.
A is a portable frame, mounted on truckwheels, and carrying the pile-driver G, with appropriate guides D, and rope-tackle for raising the driver by the horses, which are detached from the machine for the purpose, to
which driver I attach a pivoted bar, D, for
punching the post-holes by the driver, arranging it in a dovetail slot, E, in the bottom of the driver, so that it can be shifted out of the way when the post is to be driven in. To the end of the machine is attached a kind of yoke. F, for coupling onto the last post driven, as shown in Fig. l, to measure the distance from post to post; also, to hold the machine from being driven out of position by the rope G,
which raises the driver. H is a boring-head, with an auger, I, to be put in the guides of the driver for boring the hole when it is to be made deeper than the punch D will make them, the driver being at the time lifted up out of the way. The said head carries a rotary stock, J
in which the anger is placed, together with cranks K and wheels L for turning it. M is a kind of scraper, through which the auger.
Works, to be discharged of the borings raised out of the hole. N represents roller-drums for carrying wire in coils and delivering for putting on the fence or on telegraph-poles.
The machine is alike applicable for building telegraph-lines by setting the posts in like manner, and conveying the wire along them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The post-hole-punch attachment D, combined with the pile-driver O, substantially as specified.
2. The punch D, adjustably attached to the driver, for shifting it out of the way of the post, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of clearer M with the auger l, substantially as specified.
4. The wire-drums N, combined with the post-setting machine, substantially as specified.
THOMAS JACKSON TALLY.
