Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoEr WILLIAM H. YARBOROUGH, OF SHERMAN, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOUBLE-BITTED DRlLLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,220, dated May 30, 1876; application filed October 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. YARBOR- 0UGH,of Sherman,Grayson county, and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double-Bitted Drills, which improvement is fully set forth, in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings. 7
The object of my invention is to provide an easy mode of straightening wells while drilling themthrough-rock or earth, and also for enlarging the same into a cistern when it is desired to keep on hand a large supply of water. This I am enabled to accomplish with the double-bitted drill, hereinafter more fully described, consisting of a vertical stem, a, and two curved cutting-bits 0r chisels, b b, constructed as shown in the vertical side view, Figure 1, and front view, Fig. 2, of the accompanying drawing.
It has not been deemed necessary to show the drill attached to any particular well-boring machine, as it may be operated by any wellknown apparatus for that purpose.
The top of the stem at is provided with an eye, through a hole in which passes a rope, that is prevented from drawing through by a knot upon the under side. Thisrope should extend upward over a pulley and connect with any suitable mechanism that will raise the drill and let it fall. The bottom of the stemis forked, to receive the bits or chisels forcing them apart in opposite directions, and
also forcing their sharp edges against the sides of the well, cutting it away in a circular form, by its weight and momentum. A sufficient quantity being chipped off and mixed with the water, that is always used when drilling in rock, the drill is drawn out and a.
sand-bucket is let down and the drillings taken out, when the operation is repeated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A double-bitted drill, consisting of a stem, a, and two curved cutters, b b, pivoted as shown, and operated as and for the purpose herein set forth.
WILLIAM H. YABBOROUGH.
