ROCK DRILL. No. 337,968. Patented Mar. 16, 1886.
lllllu WTNESSES:
ATTORNEY.
einen.,
FRANK MANNING, OF ARDMORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROCK-DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337.968, dated March 16, 1886.
Serial No. 176,051. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MINNING, a citizen of the United States, residing in Ardmore, county of Montgomery, State o'fPennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Bock-Drills, which improvement is fully set forth in the following` specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of a rock-drill embodying my invention. Fig.
43 represents a horizontal section thereof in line xx, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
My invention consists of a roclrdrill or quarrying machine provided with means whereby the bits are powerfully struck and reliably rotated and possessing other advantages, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame of the rock-drill, and B represents a power or driving wheel mounted on the upright portion thereof. v
C represents a rotary-shaft, which extends vertically, and is mounted in cross-heads DD D2 of the drill or machine. Projecting from said shaft C are arms or pins E, which are adapted to be engaged by lateral proj ections c on the side of a cam, F, the latter being secured to or formed with the drivingvwheel B, whereby the rotation of said cam with the wheel imparts rotary motion to the shaft C.
G represents a ram or hammer, which is guided in uprights of the frame A, and connected at top with an upright stem, H, to which is secured an arm, J, so disposed that it may be engaged by the cam F on the wheel B.
K represents bits or cutters, which are tted at their upper ends into heads L, said bits and heads being properly guided in the lower part of the frame A, the heads being beneath the ram G, so as to be struck by the same. The heads have connected with them pinions or gear-wheels M, which mesh with each other, one of the pinions meshing with a pinion, N, on the lower end of the shaft C, it now being evident that the rotation of the shaft @causes rotation of the heads L and consequently of the bits K. The connection ofthe wheels M and heads L is by means of feathers, whereby said heads may move vertically in said wheels or rise and fall therein.
It will be seen that when power is applied to the wheel B the cam F engages with the arm J, thus raising the ram G, and also with the arms E, thus rotating the shaft C, and owing to the gearing N rotating the bits. lVhen the cam F clears the arm J, the stem H is no longer controlled by the cam, and the ram drops, its forcible descent being assisted by a spring, H, which bears downwardly against the arm J, or may bear against any suitable part of the stein or ram, and a powerful blow is imparted to the heads L and consequently to the bits K. The ram is then raised and the bits are elevated by springs K and rotated, after which the ram again drops, causing the bits to eut to a greater depth, and the operations are repeated and continued as desired, the blows of the ram increasing in power as the depth ofI the holes increases.
The base portion of the carriage is mounted on rollers P, whose bearing-stemsQare passed through said base and pierced to receive pins S, whereby the frame may be raised and lowered in order to adj ust the depth of penetration of the bits.
In order to guide the machine true during the drilling operation, there is attached to the base portion of the frame an arm or bar, T, in which are fitted pins U, which, after the first set of holes are drilled, are dropped thereinto, and the next set of holes are drilled, said pins are raised, the drill or machine is moved, and the pins are dropped into thelast-nanied holes, and thus the guiding of the machine is continued, as desired.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The driving-wheel B, having cam F, with projection c on the side of the said cam, in combination with the vertical rotary shaft C, provided with suitable bearings and having horizontal arms E, and gears for rotating a series of drills, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. rlhe wheel B, with cam F, having lateral projections c, and rotary shaft C, having horizontal projections E, adapted to engage the said projections a, and thereby operate a series of drill-rotating gears, in combination with hammer G, having vertical stem H, provided With arm J, and spring H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Arotary wheel having a cam, in combination with a vertical rotary shaft having pins thereon adapted to be brought in contact with lateral projections on said cam,4 and a hammer having a handle with projecting arm, the latter by its Contact, with the cam of the wheel imparting a rising and falling motion to the said hammer, substantially as described.
4. The bit K, in combination with the frame A, head L, with feather, Wheel M, mounted on the head A, pinion N, mounted on thev shaft C, the shaft C, having horizontal
