' F. D. sauna noon LATCH rum June 15, 1929 Patented Sept. 16, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FLETCHER D. GRUND, OF WESTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN SWISS COM- PANY, F TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO DOOR LATCH Application filed June 13,
' door latch having the novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter described.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in
which gig. 1 is a side elevation of a door latch; an
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises a door latch having a back plate 1 provided with a lip or flange 2 at one side. The flange 2 is formed with an opening 3, through which the head a of the latch bolt is slidable. The latch bolt is shown consisting of a plate 5 secured by rivets 6 to the head 4.
Holding the bolt plate 5 in place, is a cover plate 7 of relatively small size of approximately the width of the bolt plate 5. The 0pposite sides of the cover plate are bent downwardly and engage the back plate 1, openings being formed in the cover plate to receive tabs or tongues 8, which extend therethrough and are bent over to retain the combined cover and guide plate 7 in place.
The bolt 5 is formed with an elongate slot 9, and adjacent the end thereof remote from the head 4 are oppositely arranged inclined shoulders 10 (one above and one below the slot as shown in Fig. 1). The shoulders 10 are formed by pressing out the metal of the bolt plate to provide a depressed portion 17 Extending through the slot 9 and bearing in the cover plate and back plate members is a hub 11 having a polygonal opening 12, which extends therethrough. Oppositely extending arms 13 are provided on the hub 11, and are engageable with the shoulders 10, so

a compact assembly without sacrificing features of strength and durability.
The bolt is normally held in projected position by a coil spring 15, one end of which is held at 16 to the case plate, and the opposite end bears against a shoulder l7 on the outer side of the depressed portion 17.
The end portion of the bolt is provided with an extension 18, which is disposed in the plane of the forward portion of the plate 5. The extension 18 may be connected to any suitable retracting means, such as a remote control, by links and levers in any known manner. It will be apparent that bolt extension 18 not only serves to provide a connection for a remote control strap, or other inside retracting means, but also provides a keeper for the end of the spring 15, preventing the latter from becoming disengaged from the bolt. An extremely simple construction is produced by depressing a portion of the bolt plate, inasmuch as on one side retracting shoulders 10 are provided, and on the opposite side a spring engaging shoulder 17 From the above it is apparent that the latch may be inexpensively manufactured due to the relatively small number of parts and ease of assembly, most of the parts being stampings which adapt it particularly for production. Numerous changes in details of construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A door latch including a case plate, a bolt slidable over said plate and having its rear end portion extended outwardly to provide a shoulder and then its terminal extended rearwardly to lie in spaced and substantially parallel relation to the plate to form an anchor for remote retracting means for the bolt, a spiral spring secured to the plate and having an end engaged with said shoulder and disposed in the space. between the plate and said terminal of the rear end por- Eion of the bolt, and means to operate the olt.
2. A door latch including a case plate, a bolt slidable over said plate and having its rear end portion depressed to provide a rear shoulder and front shoulders, means to retract the bolt engaged with the front shoulde rs, and a spiral spring secured to the'plate and having an end engaged with the rear shoulder, said depressed part being located spaced from the rear terminalof thebolt so that the latter provides a stop restricting movement of said end of the spring laterally of the'plate, and alsoa connection for remote retracting means for the bolt.
3. A. door latch including a case bolt slidable oversaid plate and having its rear end portion depressed to provide a rear shoulder and front shoulders, acover plate extening over the bolt and having a, bearing,
a hub in the bearing having opposed armsengaged with said front shoulders, and a spiral spring secured to the plate and having an end engaged with the rear shoulder, said depressed part being located spaced from the rear terminalof the bolt so that the latter provides :a stop restricting movement of said end ofthe spring laterally of the plate and also a connection for remote retracting 'means 'for the boltythe bottom ofvthe depressedpart being slidably seated againstthe case plate. 7 a 1 s In testimony whereof I have hereunto a1:- signed my 'name to this specification.
