To all 'whom 'it/may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS SAULT, of N ew Haven, in the county of N ew Haveny and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing Machine, of which thel following is a specification:

.The object of this inyention is to improve the construction of' washing-machines of 'that class in which the clothes are rubbed upon a bed ot' rollers, to cause all of saidl rollers to revolve at the'same time and in .the saine direction to prevent the clothes being operated upon from gatheringinto a heap or roll, and

The clothes to be 'washedare spread outv upon the concaved bed ot' 4parallel rollers N, the journals'ot' which rest upon the bars C, which are curved upon the arc of a circle. The rollers N are kept from contact with each other, and in their proper relative positions, bythe saddle-plates l), the lower sides of centric with the are of the bars O, and are notched lto receive the` journals ot' the'said rollers N. Each of the curved bars'O restsupon the faces ot' three notches or slots in the blocks R, attached to the suds-,box A.` The bearing notch or slot` 16, 1876; application filed for the center roller is horizontal, and those for the outer rollers are inclined, as shown in the ligure, so that the bars O'may move in the arcs of their circles, or nearly so. With this construction, when a sliding pressure is applied to either of the rollers N, the journals ofthe said roller will move the bars C, which bars Will turn the journals of all the other rollers N, causing all the rollers N to revolve at the same time and in the same direction, which keeps the clothes spread out upon the rollers N, and keepstheln from being collected into a'heap or roll. This effect is mainly due to the long notches or slots in which the journals of the rollers Q revolve, and which changes the sliding friction of said journals 1 rinto a rolling friction and enables the curved hars 0' to be moved by the friction ofthe journals-of the roller N, which friction would not be sufficient to move said bars C if the journals ofthe rollers Q revolve in holes.
