IRVINE n. EUBANKS, or MoNnovIA, cALIFonnIA BRAKE-LININQ COMPOSITION No Drawing. I
This invention relates to a composition of matter compounded especially for making a paste to befapplied to the surface of brake linings such as areflused upon automobile J brakes, the purpose of the invention beingito reinforcethe action of the brake lining, and to increase the life and wearing properties thereof. Persons familiarwith the construction of brake linings are aware that they are usually made up of fiber, asbestos, and woven awire, compressed into a suitablewidth and thickness, i
The asbestos is first treated with an oilor chemical to render it pliable. Then, within a short time, this liningis attached to the brake band of the automobile, foractual service. It is obvious however, that these linings dry out,
' become .verythard, and the pores fill up with road dirt.v This virtually forms an abrasive coating which has a tendency to wear both the lining and the brake drum.
- effected by water, in rainy or wet weather, y andthey become soft,.and the brakes slip and t After the linings have dried out, they are drag. This destroysto a great extent, the value of the braking system.-
l f I" The purpose of this inventlon is, therefore, to provide a composition which can be applied to the surface of the, wearing. lining to increase the grippingpower and life. The composition comprlsesa mixture of ingredients or agents in the following proportions:- I

face of thebrake lining and the brakedrum with awiping action due to the rotation of the brake drum, wipes the very heavy fibres of the compound on theface of the brake lining,
which gives a new, soft, velvety surface'o'n all of thebrake linings. This naturally prolongs-the life of thelining, and increases the efficiency of the brake,\wate"r-proofs the lining and reduces the abrasive disadvantage and stops the squawks and squeaks.
' Without going further into'the theoretical advantages] of the compound, it is believed that a clear comprehension and understand ing ofthe discovery will be apparent to persons skilled in this particular art. Consei In conclusionit 1 .quently, a more lengthy description is re 1 gardedunnecessarya sto be stated that the proportions, may be varied to the natureof the character oflining toswhi'ch it is tobe applied. Therefore, a liberal interpretation of the succeeding claims is in order,
Having thus described myinvention, what I a I claim as'new is? i 1. As a new product lining composition comprising the following ingredients compounded in the following proportions, .paraflin oil. 49 fibre asbestos 43% talc-um4 /;.-,f% ;and oil of cedar 2 70.
. 2. As a new article of manufacture, a brake of manufacture, brake lining composition composed of paraflin oil, 7

' WVhen thus applied, the oil of cedar penetrates the, lining, softens the asbestos as ,well
as the dirt as collected in the pores of the lining. The paraifin oil being somewhat absorbed by-the asbestos inthe lining. Dur
