Description

W. MEHAN.
PASSENGER REGISTER. No. 177,53Z. PaEented MaylG. 1876.
' monum l-PETERS. HOTCFUTNOGMPIQER, WASHINGTON, D C.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MEHAN, OF HOBOKEN, JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PASSENGER-REGISTERS.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No. 177,532, dated May 16, 1876; application filed March 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM MEHAN, of Hoboken, county of Hudson, and State of N ew Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Passenger-Registers, of which the following is a specification: I
Figure 1 is an end view of a car to which my improvement has been applied, the platform being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top view of the turnstile.
The invention consists in the construction an d combination of parts hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents the body of a car, and B the platform. in the doorway or other passage is pivoted a vertical shaft, 0, to which, at a suitable height, is attached a stile or gate, D, which consists of a circular plate or frame of a diameter equal to the diameter of the door or passage, and in which are formed notches 01' recesses of such a shape and size as to receive the body of a single passenger as he passes through, antkprevcnt more than one passing through at a time. To the upper end of the shaft G is attached a ratchet-wheel, E, with the teeth of which engages a pawl, F, attached to the body of the car. In the floor of the car, beneath one side of the gate or stile I), is placed a loose or trap platform, G, of such a size that the passenger cannot step over it, and which rests upon and is supported by the end of the lever H. The lever H is pivoted to and beneath the platform B, and to its outer end is attached a Weight, L, by which the platform G is supported, and which overbalances the said platform so much that I it will not be depressed by the passing over it of a child. To the outer end of the lever H is attached the lower end of a rod, I, the upper end of which is attached to' the pawl J,
that operates a set of ordinary registering- Wheels, K, and which is so arranged as to turn the first wheel of said register through the space of one tooth at each depression of the platform.
It will be observed that the turnstile is entirely independent of the register, and may be turned to any extent without operating the register, so that passengers may pass out free 1y through the other side of the turnstile, but cannot pass in at said side as the ratchet and pawl E F prevent it from'turning back.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the turnstile O .D and its ratchet and pawl E F with the movable platform G, the lever H, the balancing-weight L, the connecting-rod I, the pawl J, and the registering-wheels K, to adapt the device for use as a passenger-register, substantially as herein shown and .described.
WILLIAM MEHAN.
