Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVESTER L. COOPER, OF LEVISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO JOHN LOOK AND ROBERT N. WILLIAMS,
OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PASSENGER-REGISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,492, dated August 5, 1873; application lcd May 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLvEsTEn L. COOPER, of Lewistown, county of Mifflin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar- Indicators, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in registers for street-cars; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, which will 4be more fully described hereafter, by which the same step will register the number of full and half fares of those entering the oar.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted View of the same. Fig. 3 is a View of the dial, the face. being broken away so as to show the mechanism.
Figs. 4, 5, 6 are detail views.
a represents the platform of the car, to which the movable step b is attached, having the inclined blocks c secured to each end so that only one person at a time can get upon it, and that persons weight will be applied directly in the middle of the step, so as to secure proper action thereof. To the under side of each end of the step are secured two pendent arms, d, which are pivoted to the ends of the pivoted weights e, the weights being looped together at their inner ends so as to operate together. Pivoted in the side piece is a lever, g, carrying an adjustable weight, t', which is used for regulating the half-fares. The short end extends under the step, so that aperson whose weight does not exceed the number of pounds allowed for half-fare will press the step down to the lever, but one whose weight exceeds the half-fare will press the lever up, and be registered as full fare. Extending outward from one of the weights c is an arm, h, which communicates the motion of the step through the connecting-rod l to the registering apparatus. The dial-face has two concentric rows of gures arranged around it, and two hands, which move in opposite directions so as to register the full and halffares, and keep them entirely separate and distinct. For operating the two hands, there are two entirely separate and distinct levers, a 0, provided with spring-pawls for operating the ratchet-wheels 1 2 arranged on the same shaft. The connecting-rod l is secured to the end of the lever n, which registers the halffares, and which is operated by the upward movement of the step, as the half-fare person steps oli' it. The spring-pawl 3 attached to this lever has a shoulder formed upon its upper end, which, catching behind the post 4 in its upward movement with the lever a, forces the hook or lower end against the wheel l. Upon the upper side of the lever n there is formed a catch, 5, which catches on top of the lever o, and when a full-fare passenger gets upon the step presses the lever down its full stroke, so as to make it turn the wheel 2 one notch forward, the dog 6 preventing a recoil, and the spring 7 returning the levers to position as soon as the step is released from the passengers weight. As the lever a is drawn downward the lower end of the pawl 3 catches in an opening through the springplate 8 so that its end is forced outward from the wheel l, so as to prevent it from passing more than one cog at a time, which it otherwise would do, on account of the distance the lever travels in order to cause the registry of a full-fare passenger. A dog prevents the wheel 1 from recoiling. The teeth of the wheels 1 2 are set in opposite directions so as to cause them to revolve corre spondingly in moving around the hands on the dial-plate.
The number of teeth on each is preferably one hundred, and connected to these wheels are any suitable mechanism, which will carry on the registering up to one hundred thousand, or more.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The step b, in. combination with the tri angular blocks c, substantially as set forth,
by which the relative Weights of fares muy be regulated7 substantially as shown.
In testimony that I elaiin the foregoing as my invention, I hereunto affix my signature this 10th day of April, 1873.
SYLVESTER L. COOPER.
