IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-TANKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0'. [77,470, dated May 16, 1876; application filed" March 24, 1876.
I drawing, forming part of this specification, in
which- Figure l is a vertical section, with the position of the hood when thrown back represented in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
This invention relates to an improved construction of oil-can for grocers and other retailers of oil, which can is adapted to receive the contents of one or more barrels, and by reason of its peculiar construction aifords greater facilities for manipulating the same when the can is to be cleaned out.
In the drawing, A represents a sheet-metal can or tank of any suitable size, but'preferably of a capacity-of about fifty gallons. In the upper portion of this, upon one side, is form ed a semi-cylindrical drip and fillingchaln her, having a bottom, Bfand side 0. Inside this chamber is constructed a tubular projection, D, communicating with the interior of the can, and adapted to receive through its upper open end theremovable pump E. which extends down into the oil. Ihis pump is provided with apiston, which is operated by hand to discharge the oil from its spout into the vessel to be filled in drip-chamber. In the bottom of the drip-chamber is a conical sheet-metal strainer, F, madeof perforated sheet metal or gauze-wire, intended to catch such impurities as may be Washed down by the drippings and prevent them from fouling the oil in the can. Toward this strainer the bottom B of the dripreceptacle .is slightly inclined, so as to cause .it to drain thoroughly. G isthe dispensingtray, upon which the customers receptacle for the. oil is placed. This tray is made to correspond in shape to one of the corners of the drip-chamber, and is placed therein upon one side of the pump. It is raised above the bottom B, so as to keep the small oil-cans of the customers clean and out of contact with the drip, and is perforated to allowthe drip from the oil-can to pass back to thetank. Just beneath this dispensing-tray is the filling-opening, which is provid ed'with a removable cover, E. This opening through the'bottom B obviates the necessity of making the bottom-removable in order to fill the can, and being located beneath the dispensing-tray, it is both out of the way and out of sight. Upon the rear upper portion of the tank is a hinged cover, I, which is in shape the segment of a circle, and is hinged upon its straight edge;
This door is used for cleaning out sediment and impurities from the can, and its arrangement permits, when the can is upset, of the easy removal of the accumulated sediment, as
there is no raised edge or flange to obstruct J is a de- The pump is then inserted in the barrel and the oil pumped into the tank through the opening, from which the cover H is removed. In dispensing the oil the pump is fitted in -its position in the drip-chamber, and operated to fill the cans of the customers. When the can is to be cleaned of its accumulated sediment the pump is removed, the h'bod J detached, and the can upset and cleaned through the hinged door-I.
I am aware of the fact that oil-covers have been constructed with a hinged hood, dispensing-tray, and pump of the same general construction as mine, and therefore I disclaim the same, and confine my invention to a de tachable hood, combined with a can having a segmental cover, I, in the rear, which detachable character of the hood permits the removal of the same when the can is to be tilted back, and thus obviates the obstruction which it would otherwise afford to the cleaning out of the can through cover I.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new. is-
The combination, with the oil-can having a hinged segmental cover, I, of the detachable hood J, hinged to the can by means of the removable rod to, substantially as and for the purpose described.
