This invention relates to an improved phonograph case which has a light appearmice as the phonograph is over display stand which acts as a stand for works of art, etc.,

a and also receives part of the sound that emerges from the horn and serves to amplify and direct the sound.

The invention is also designed to provide an article of furniture which has the outlet at port-ion of the amplifying horn disposed so that it is not a conspicuous or unpleasant feature of the case.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view, one half of which is shown in section, of a case embodying my invention. Figure 2 is a side view of the case shown in g Figure 1. Figure 3 is a section of the top part of the case this section being taken on a plane through the centre of the case. Figure 4 is a top view with the lid removed and with portions of the case broken away to more clearly illustrate the interior construction.

The case is in the form of a cabinet 10 which can be suitably ornamented and which at the bottom has any usual form of racks or shelves 11 for thestorage of phonograph records, this part being provided with the doors 12. Suitably disposed but usually occupying the upper central portion of the casmg, is a chamber 13 having the bottom 14 a on which are placed suitable works of art or bric-a-brac 15*, the front side of this chamber being open and the back 15 being solid, while the sides are usually provided with the glass 16 although these sides can be left open if desired. It is preferable however, to place the glass in them as it gives a better finish to the case and assists in direct ing sound out of the front and open side of the chamber 13.

Above the chamber is a compartment 17, the top wall 18 of the chamber forming the bottom of the compartment and the top wall 7 19 of the compartment forming a platform over which is mounted the usual turn table 20 for phonograph records. This compartment is comparatively flat and is provided with.

the front panel 25 of the compartment 17 can be cut away to form a fret work or screen at 26 through which sound can also pass.

The horn is usually made, as shown in Figure 4, so as to leave room in the compartment for the installation of a phonograph motor 27 for rotating the disk turntable 20. It will be evident, therefore, that the article of furniture has the appearance of being, to a great extent, an open structure, the chamber 13 of which can be utilized for the display of any of the usual articles ofhome or interior decoration which gives the case an appearance of lightness and symmetry, the chamber of which also permits the softening and direct ing of sound issuing from the amplifying horn.

The top of the cabinet is provided with the usual lid 28 which, when lowered into position, covers the turn table for holding the disk and the tone arm.

It will be evident that minor changes can be made in the proportion and arrangement of the parts of the case without departing from the scope of the invention. The specification describes a phonograph case. This is done for the purpose of making the description clear but any sound producing mechanism can, of course, be substituted for the phonograph without departing from the scope of the invention.

I claim:

1. A case comprising a cabinet having a display chamber with an open side and a compartment above the chamber, a phonograph mechanism in the cabinet, and a horn in the compartment having an outlet through the top wall of the chamber and adjacent to the open side of the chamber whereby the plhamber receives and directs sound from the orn.

2. A case comprising a cabinet having a display chamber, and having a compartment above the chamber, a motor in the compartment, the compartment having an amplifying sound passage with its inlet end passing through the top of the compartment and its outlet in the top Wall of the chamber Whereby the chamber receives and directs the sound from the passage.

3. A case comprising a cabinet having a display chamber with an open front and having a compartment above the display chamber, the compartment being substantially fiat, a fiat amplifying horn in the compartment with a small receiving end at the rear thereof and passing through the top Wall of the compartment and having its large and outlet end passing through the top Wall of the chamber whereby the chamber can be used for the reception and direction of sound.
