PATENT GEEIOE.
DANIEL JOHNSON, onfAsHLANn, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FORCE-PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,401, dated May 16, 1876; application filed- May 5, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL JOHNSON, of Ashland, in the county of Ashland, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Force-Pumps, of which the following is a specification .My invention relates to force-pumps and it consists in the construction and arrangement ofthe device for preventing the same from freezin g, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part ot' this specification, and in which- Figure l is a front view, Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a section through the air-chamber and valve. 4
A represents the pump cylinder, with piston or plunger B constructed in the usual manner for force-pumps. The plunger-rod c extends up to and above ground, where it is .connected with a lever-l1andle for operatin g the plunger.
The pump-cylinder A communicates with a box, E, by a short connectingpipe, a., said box being held to the frame surrounding the pumpcylinder by any suitable means. To the box E is connected the airchamber G, constructed substantially in the form shown, or in any other suitable or convenient shape. From the box E extends the discharge pipe YH, the lower end ot' which is below the entrancepipe a to said box. The discharge-pipe H extends up above the ground, and is constructed in any suitable manner.v Within this pipe at a suitable-point is placed a valve, d, said' valve being provided with an upwardly-projecting stem, z', which enters the lower end of a pipe, I, within the discharge-pipe. The upper end of pipe I is curved outward and passes through the side of thel discharge-pipe, as shown. This point on the discharge-pipe should be below the point of frost.
The normal position 'of the valve-d is on the seat b, closing the discharge-pipe at that point. Now, as the pump is worked and the Water forced up the discharge-pipe H, the valve dis raised until it closes the lower end of the in -terior pipe I, and the water can pass freely around the same and up the discharge-pipe.
As soon as the motion ofthe pump is stopped the walve d, of its own weight, aided 'by the column ofwater above it, will at once fall down on the seat b, preventing the water above the same from passing down. -This water, however, will at once pass into and out through the pipe l.
It will thus be seen that when the pump is in operation the vent-pipe I is closed by the valve, and as soonk as the pump is stopped said vpipe is opened, discharging the water above it,
and hence making the pump non-freezing.
Having thus fully describedA my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by` Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the discharge-pipe H ot' a force-pump, the valve-seat 12,. interior ventpipe I, and valve d, with stem c', substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that'l claim the foregoing as' my own, I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL JOHNSON.
