PAT NT; oFrics JOSEPH PRASIVKA, OF QBERWYN, ILLINOIS AUXILIARY WATER-CATGHING PIPE FOR DRAINPIPES Application filed May 31,
The present invention relates to auxiliary m is the provision of the, device of the character indicated which may be detachable from the drain pipe and which may be employed in connection therewith during heavy rains when the backing of the water from the sew With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims. 7 1
In the drawing forming a part of this application, and in; which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross-sectional View through the device, and through the drain pipe with which itis associated, the view having been taken on line 11 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 2 is a topplan view of the device with portion thereof broken away.
Referring in detail to the present drawings there is shown therein drain pipe 10 having flange 11 which remains flush with floor 12. The end of drain pipe 10 is provided with drain bars 13 through which water is adaptl nto hooks 25 bymeans of which said rods ed to pass into the drain pipe 10 and thence to sewers. The drain pipe of the character illustrated is usually employed in cellars and garages.
The invention which is intended to be used in connection with the drain pipe aforesaid includes a comparatively long cylindrical casing 14 which at its lower end is provided with flange 15, said flange 15 in the operative association with the drain pipe 10 is adapted to rest above or upon flange 11 of said drain pipe 10.
1929. Serial No. 367,492.
For providing a joint between drain pipe 10 and cylindrical casing 14 gasket 16 made of rubber or, any other suitable material is provided and is interposed between flanges 11 and 15. Said gasket 16 is provided with an upwardly projecting annular extension 17 which is adapted for positioning within the adjacentend of said cylindrical casing 14 and Where the same is adapted to be frictionally held. V
Positioned within said. cylindrical casing 14 is a transverse bar 18, which remains within the lower end of said cylindrical casing l4 and wherein the same is rigidly mounted to the wall of-said cylindrical casing 14by its bent ends 19, which are either soldered to the wall of the casing or in any other suitable manner attached thereto. Saidbar 18 is provided with a pair of openings 20 for passing therethrough pair of rods 21. Said 'bar 18 is for the purpose of holding said rods 21 .in position within the cylindrical casing 14 and for preventing their lateral movement .therewithin. However, said openings 20 are sufliciently large to permit rods21-to make slightangular shifting movements asmay be necessaryto engage the lower ends of said rods '21 with drain bars 13 as will be hereinafter described. I
Positioned upon the upper open end of said cylindrical casing 14 is another bar 22' having its ends bent as at 23 for engaging the outer periphery of said cylindrical cas ing 14.- Said bar 22 is likewise provided withfopenings 24 which are inalinement with openings 20in bar 18 for passing there-' through the upper threaded ends of rods 21.
"The lower ends of said rods 21 are bent wing-nuts 26, which, on being tightened are adapted to clamp cylindrical, casing 14 to the drain pipe 10.
From, thei ,hereinabove description it will be seen that the auxiliary cylindrical casing 14 maybe detachably positioned upon and over the end of drain pipe 10, gasket 16 providing a leak-proof joint between said auxiliary casing 14 and drain pipe 10 for preventing any water to leak outwardly. It
oftentimes happens that water in the sewers backs out, which may be due to heavy rains or other causes, and floods the cellers by'backing out through the drain pipe. Therefore, by providing the auxiliary cylindrical casing 14 over drain pipe 10 the water which backs,
out from said drain pipe 10 will collect within said cylindrical casing 14 and will remain there until the emergency has passed and the water again normally finds the outlet into the sewers. It is to be understood that cylindrical casing 14 may be of any length depending upon the amount of water which may back out from drain pipe 10.
While there is described herein a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is: 1. The auxiliary water collecting pipe for drain pipe including drain bars, comprising a flanged receptacle longitudinally disposed in relation to said drain pipe, bars transversely disposed in said receptacle, a plurality of rods passing through said bars, said rods being provided with means at their lower ends for engaging said drain bars, and means at the opposite ends of said rods cooperating with one of said bars for clamping said receptacle to the drain pipe, said receptacle substantially corresponding in diameter to the diameter of said drain pipe.
2. An auxiliary water collecting pipe for drain pipe including drain bars, comprising a tubular receptacle open at both ends, a flange atone of the ends of said tubular receptacle whereby the same is adapted to rest upon the end of the drain pipe, a plurality of rods Within said tubular receptacle, bars therewithin for laterally supporting said rods, hooks at the lower ends of said rods for engaging the drain bars, the upper ends of said rods being threaded for receiving nuts bearing against one of said bars for clampdrain pipe, said receptacle being open at both ends, a flange at one end of said tubular receptacle whereby the same is adapted to rest upon the end of the drain pipe, a plurality of rods within said tubular receptacle, a bar within said tubular receptacle adjacent the lower end thereof, another bar adjacent the upper end of said tubular receptacle, a plurality of rods passing through both of said bars, hooks at the lower ends of said rods for engaging said drain bars, the upper ends of said rods being threaded for receiving nuts bearing against said second named bar for clamping said tubular receptacle to the drain pipe, and gasket interposed between the ad 'jacent ends of said tubular receptacle and pipe for providing a sealed joint said drain therebetween.
5. In combination with a drain pipehaving a grating, a tubular receptacle open at both ends and having an outwardly extending flange at the lower end thereof, a gasket interposed between the flange'and the drain pipe, a perforated cross bar secured to the receptacle adjacent to the lower end thereof,
a perforated cross bar secured to the top of the receptacle, and hook bolts passing through the cross bars and detachably engaging the grating to clamp the receptacle to the drain pipe.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOSEPH PRASIVKA.
ing said tubular recepetacle to the drain pipe,
and gasket interposed between the adjacent ends of said tubular receptacle and said drain pipe for providing a sealed joint therebetween.
3. An auxiliary water collecting pipe for drain pipe including drain bars, comprising a tubular receptacle of a diameter substantially corresponding to the diameter of said drain pipe, said receptacle being open at both ends, a flange at one end of said tubular receptacle whereby the same is adapted to rest upon the end of the drain pipe, a plurality of rods within said tubular receptacle, a bar within said tubular receptacle adjacent the
