lMy invention relates to improvements in belt constructions for conveying and elevating uses, the carrying face of which has high tractive and wear-resisting properties, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and Varrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a belt construction which is provided with a novel means which may be readily secured to the outer surface thereof for relieving the body of the belt from wear thereupon when used for conveying purposes.
A further object of my invention is to provide a belt construction of the type described wherein the novel means for creating traction upon the outer surface as when conveying various objects is positive in its use and will retain the objects, even though at a relatively steep incline.
A further object of my invention is to provide a belt construction of the type described in which the tractive and wear-resisting properties may be readily resurfaced, thereby increasing the life `of the belt.
A further object of my invention is to provide a belt construction of the type described in which they belt may be readily used for a positive driving connection if so desired. j
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specilication, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective fragmentary view of the belt,
Figure 2 is a section substantially along the 4 line 2 -2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an enlarged section substantiaL ly along the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a diagrammatic illustration of the belt used for. conveying.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a belt having a body portion 1 which may be formed of any desired material, such as rubber, leather, canvas, or the like. A plurality of strips 2 is secured as spaced-apart positions to the body portion 1 of the belt by any suitable means, .such as stitching. `The 'strips 2 may be formed of any suitable materiah preferablythatwhich is woven.l The` freey edges of the strips 2 are combed out so as to provide a multiplicity of retaining ends or members k3. In this manner, a rough or uneven edge is providedjforeaych side ofjeachxof thestrips2. A coatingis thendi'sposed upon 4the retaining membersv or ends: 3 soasto form a cover 4 .which`- isliigh rinftrac'tive and wear-resisting 60 properties. The. stripsl2 are impregnated withany one of many materialshigh in tracytive. and, wearresisting properties; as, for example, synthetic "gums, vegetable drying' oils, mineraloils,` andresinate dryers. The 65 frayed ends provide an irregularsurface having unusually efective tract-ive properties. Since the edges are ra'yed,it willfbe noted that l.when the strips are impregnated, a heavy andy irregularcoatingof, the impregilated:ma-l terial willaccumulate'or ladhere tothe -frayed ends. AIn view of thefact that tthe looseends are yrayedyand,more onless irregular in their arrangement, a ,peculiar edge is formed upon the strips, which,in connection vwithfthe strips proper, provide an leffective construction. ,l In the. lirstpla'cfe, tlie :strips protect thelmain body portion/ofthe belt;'xsecondly, the strips provide .meansyhaving effective tractive 'and wear-resisting properties; thirdly, the con- 80, struction is such that when the strips become worn, they may be easily and quickly removed for permitting replacement. These covers cause the ends 3 to extend outwardly from the body `portion 1 of the belt, thus causing 85 friction portions for a purpose hereinafter described. l
Let us assume that the beltr is used for conveying various objects as illustrated in Figf ure 4. The objects, as indicated at 5, ywhen disposed upon the belt will rest upon the strips 2 and upon the retaining membersY which include the ends 3 and the covers 4. The covers 4 being of high tractive and wearresisting properties will hold the objects as 95, they are carried upon the belt. With this construction, the objects can be carried at a relatively Vsteep incline without causing the objects to slide upon the belt.
When the covers 4 become worn after long 100 use, the ends 3 may be provided with new covers if so desired. Furthermore, new strips 2 may be provided by either first removing the old strips and then securing the new strips thereto, or by securing the new strips in place without removing the old strips.
In this manner, the Abelt may be put to hard use and yet be relieved of the wear by the aid of the strips which have their two-fold purpose; i. e., relieving the body portion of the belt from the wear ofthe objects which are conveyed thereupon and `providing tract-ive portions by means of which objects may be conveyed up a relatively steep incline.
It may be observed that the belt as shown with thezstrips and their retaining members maybe used .efficiently inthe reverse position for Aproviding a positive driving connection between two pulleys.
I claim: i
l.l A belt construction comprising a body .portion having a plurality of longitudinally disposed strips secured thereto, said strips being provided with frayed edges, the strips and said frayed edges being impregnated and coated ywith a material having tractive properties.
2. A belt construction comprising 'a body portion having .a'strip secured thereto and arranged `in .longitudinal alignment therewith, said strip being provided `with frayed edges and impregnated with a material having tractive properties.
.3. A belt construction comprising a body :portion havingafplurality of strips arranged in longitudinally extending alignment with the longitudinal axis ,of the body :portion of the belt and-secured thereto, the edges of said strips being frayed and projecting laterally from said strips.
