Description
Aug. 19, 1930. D. E. MULCAHY AMUSEMENT BOMB Filed July 15. 1929' FIU- Z 2 JMwntor .Danz'el E'Mulcaigy Patented Aug. 19, 1930 UNITED STATES DANIEL E. MULCAHY, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON 7 Application filed July 15,
This invention relates to pyrotechnic bombs, and particularly to toy amusement bombs.
The objects of the invention are to provide an amusement bomb for children, in form of a round ball or globe, with several charges of different kinds of inflammable material to be fired in sequence, with a fuse to be first ignited, and the ball to be then thrown in the air or rolled on the ground, and a slow burning smoke emitting substance in the ball to be next ignited and produce a densesmoke for a considerable period for prolonging the expectancy of the observers, and the ball to contain further a charge of explosive which thirdly will become ignited when the smoke emitting substance has burned down to the charge, and thereupon the ball and container will be broken into fragments and a loud report be heard from the explosion.
With these and other objects as may be pointed out in the specification following, I have illustrated my invention by the accompanying drawings, of which:
Figure 1 is a top plan of the bomb,
Figure 2 is a side elevation in section, taken on lines 2, 2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a section plan, taken onlines 3, 3 of Figure 2.
Like numerals on the difi'erent figures represent like parts.
4 is round shell or globe, preferably formed of wood pulp, or other suitable light material, which will normally retain its round shape, and be light to handle, and which may be readily disrupted by a light charge of explosive contained therein, without causing injury to the observers. 5 is a tube of similar material, which is inserted through one side of the ball and one end thereof afiixed by glue or otherwise to the opposite inside wall of the ball as at 6. The outer end of the tube preferably extends a short distance outside the shell of the ball as at 7, which prevents the ball from rolling over or resting with the outer end or mouth of the tube on the ground, which would interfere with the escape of smoke AMUSEMENT BOMB 1929. serial- No. 378,341.
from the insidethereof and might sometimes smother the fire therein.
8 is a charge of suitable explosive material packed in the lower portion of the tube,
for makinga bright flash and a loud report and for disrupting the tube and ball when the charge is ignited, 9 is a charge of suit-able substance, such asa combination of sulphur and other chemicals preferably in powder form designed to createa dense smoke of colors determined by the chemicals, when ignited, and to burn slowly and, hold the observers in suspense for a considerable time while waiting for the explosion. 10 is a suitable fuse or slow match extending from the smoke material out through the mouth of the tube for ready ignition, by any ordinary means. 11 is suitable collar fixed in the tube over the smoke material for holding the same in position, While 12 is a paper cap over the collar and over the opening 13 therein, to prevent loss of the contents of the tube in transportation. The cap also holds the fuse in position till the fire reaches the cap when it will burn away and permit the smoke to escape through the opening 13.
A partition 14 of suitable material is affixed in the tube between the charges of explosive and smoke material, and is provided with a perforation hole or duct 15 extending therethrough for permitting the fire from the smoke material, when burned down to that point, to ignite the explosive 8, and to cause the final explosion and disruption of the parts. 7
An abutment 16, of clay or other suitable material is fixed across the tube beneath the explosive for confining the same until ignited, and is so located a suitable distance above the lower end of the tube, to leave an open space 17 for increasing the sound of the report when the explosion takes place.
Having described my invention, I claim as new for Letters Patent:
1. In combination an amusement bomb, arranged to provide a series of events in sequence, with a rupturable container, and a rupturable tube therein, an inflammable smoke emitting substance packed in the outer portion of the tube, and a fuse for igniting the same protruding therefrom, a perforated partition across the tube beneath the smoke emitting substance, and a charge of explosive for rupturing the tube and container, packed in the tube beneath the partition, and ignitable through the perforation when the smoke emitting substance is consumed.
2. In combination, an amusement bomb, With globular container, atube affixed the container, With one end protruding therefrom, an abutment across the tube above the inner end thereof, and a perforated partition across the tube near the center thereof,
a charge of explosive packed in the tube ,between the abutment and the partition ignitable through ,the perforation in the partition, a charge of slow burning smoke emit-- ting substance packed in the tube above the partition, and a fuse for igniting the sub?- jstance, extending therefrom, all to provide a series of gmtrons and ,burmngs 1n sequence ending in a loud report and the breaking up of the container and tube.
In testimony vwhereof I affix my signature.
' DANIEL SE, MULCAHY.
