UNITED STATES PATENT orrlca .ASSIGNOB TO GERTRUDE FLAT- LAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS CUSHIONING DEVICE FOR RAILROAD RAILS Application filed August 10, 1928. Serial No. 298,714.
This invention relates to improvements in cushionin device for railroad rails, and one of the ob eets of the same is to provide an improved device of this character which will not only form a cushion for the rail, especially in elevated structures to relieve the structure from vibration, but-will also deaden the noise caused by the wheels rolling upon the rails.
A further object is to provide a cushion of this character which may be produced in the factor as a finished product or article of manu acture ready to be laid by simply Iplaicing the same upon the cross ties or road To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful ohthe invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a view partly in vertical cross section and partly in elevation of a cushioning device constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention, showing at the left hand end of the figure one form of fastening or anchoring means, and at the other end of the figure another method of anchoring the sam Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the cushion.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 10 designates a base plate constructed of any suitable non-elastic material and- ,may be of any desired length, width and thickness. Mounted upon the plate 10 and secured thereto in any suitable manner is an elastic element 11 constructed of any suitable material which will with-- stand considerable wear and is permanently secured to the plate 10 and is substantially co-extensive withthe adjacent face of the plate and forming therewith a unitary structure.
The article thus produced is as long as the rail and may be placed upon the cross ties 12 or upon a road bed, and when in position the plate 10 will engage the ties or road bed whilte the elastic element 11 will be uppermos c The rail 13 iscadapted to be placed upon the element 11 so that the lower face of the base of the rail will contact with the element 11 and the element 11 will be substantially base.
When in this position the rail and cushioning device may be anchored or secured in place in any suitable manner, preferably by means of the usual railroad nails or spikes 14, the head of which fastening device, in the form shown at the left of Figure 1, engages over the edge of the rail base and of the plate 10 and element 11. a
As shown at the right of Figure 1, the spikes or fastening devices 15 pass through suitable openings 16, and then pass through openings 17 and 18- respectively in the element 11 and base plate 10, and are then driven into the tie or supporting surface 12.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the element 11' may be provided with a notch 19 opening through one edge thereof which is arranged in alinement with the corresponding notch 20 in the edge of the late 10 and in which registering notches t e fastening spike 14 is adapted to stand.
With this improved construction it will be co-extensive with the abutting face of the'rail manifest that .in 'elevatedstructures the noise I created by the rolling of the wheels upon the rail will be deadened as the rail will be yieldingly supported by means of the cushion and at the same time the elevated structures will be relieved of the vibration and shocks.
While the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention. at is claimed as new is 1. A railroad rail cushioning device embodying a flat anchor plate of non-elastic material substantially cc extensive in width. with the width of the rail, a flat elastic element secured to and substantially co-extensive with the face of the plate and constitutin therewith a unitary structure and upon whic elastic element the flat bottom face of the rail rests, there being 0 enings in the said plate and element throug 1 which fastening devices may be passed to anchor the plate.
3. A railroad rail cushioning device em bodying a flat anchor plate of non-elastic material, an elastic element permanently secured to one face thereof andconstituting therewith a unita structure and upon whlch element the flat h ase of the rail rests, the surface of the element which contacts with the bottom face of the rail base being substantially coextensive in width with the width of said base, and means for anchoring said plate.
