IMPROVEMENT IN PLUG-TOBACCO BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,250, dated May 9, 1876 application filed April 7, 18:76.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. JAQUES, of Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Box for Packing Plug-Tobacco; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. I
Theinvention relates to an improved box,
Fig. 3 is an end view.
The box is composed of the side plates A A, which are placed opposite 'each other, and provided with parallel flanges a, formed by bending the edges of the plates A A at a right angle. One end of the box is formed of a rectangular flanged piece, 0, having an opening,b. This piece is soldered, or otherwise suitably secured, to the side plates A A. The other end, D, of the box is similarly provided with an opening, d, and with a rightangular flange, 0, but is made removable to adapt it to perform the function of a cover.
The same may be secured by various and otherwise preferable are a hook or outwardly-bent tongue, 0, formed on the end of one side, A, and an eye or loop formed on'the other side, A, and projecting through slots cut in the cover D.
A pin passes through the eye or loop, and when it is removed the cover may be readily detached.
The flanges of the cover embrace and hold the ends of sides A A but this function may be supplemented by a sliding band, 9.
The box may be constructed of sheet metal, wood, or other suitable light material.
It is apparent that the box allows almost as thorough inspection of the contained plugs as if they were removed from it and could be separately handled, and at the same time protects'and holds them in a compact package convenient for handling, storing, shipping, Stc.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A box made of sheet metal, wood, or other material, for packing plug-tobacco, consisting of the flanged sides A A, open-ended bottom B, and open-ended hinged lid 0, substantially as specified.
