SAW-SET.
Patented May 9 1876.
hiii lmu I I "[051 flveni az; WVWW N.FETERS. FHOTO LITHOGRAPHERI WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES ments in Saw-Sets; and do hereby declare- .HIRAM HITOHGOOK, OF ADAMS TOWNSHIP, HILLSDALE COUNTY, MICHIGAN.
PATENT Darren.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-SETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17732516, dated May 9, 1876; application filed March 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM HITGHCOCK, of the township of Adams, in the county of Hillsdale, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvereferring to the annexed drawing, in which' Figure l is a side elevation of my saw-set, Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents the bed or bed-plate of my saw-set, provided on one side, at the frontend, with a projection, A In this projection, as well as in the rear end of the bed-plate, are suitable boltholes for the passage of bolts or screws, to fasten the machine to any table,
bench, or other support.
Near the front end of the bed-plate A are two-parallel standards, b b, between which the punch B is pivoted by means of a bolt, a, the punch being provided with two holes, so as to be changed according to the kind. of work desired to be done. The punch is held up by means of a spring, d,which is fastened on top of the pivoted end, and, passing around said end, rests in a grpove in the bed-plate between the standards b b. The front end of thepunch is beveled, as shown, and under the same is an inclined face, f, with a series of notches, e e, at the bottom or lower end, and from the upper end of said incline extends another incline, h, these inclines being the upper surfaces of a raised projection, A of the bed-plate.
On the incline f is secured a rectangular gage-plate, 0, fastened by a screw, 71, passing through a slot in the plate, and said plate in its upper surface provided with recesses w m, as shown.
The bolt a, which pivots the punch B to the standards b b, also pivots-a lever, D, to the outside of one of them, the inner end of said lever extending over the projection A and having a set or gage screw, m, passing through it to bear against said projection A Beyond the end of the punch the lever is curved in the shape of an S, and formed on its under side with a cross-lip, n, as shown.
In the outer bend of the S of said lever D is a set-screw, h, which is to come down-on the saw-blade in the operation of setting the saw.
The projection A of the bed-plate is straddled by means of aforked lever, G, pivoted thereto by a horizontal bolt, and the upper face of the forked end of this lever is beveled to correspond with the incline h of said projection. In the crotch of this lever is a set-screw, p, which bears on the bed-plate to regulate the height of its inclined face above the incline h. In setting the saw the blade is laid over the inner forked end of the lever G, with the tooth on the gage-plate O. The lever G having been previouslyset to the desired angle, the lever D is brought down by a cord attached to its outer end, and the lip 11. and
set-screw 70 will set the plate as required, or
2. The pivoted punch B, with spring d, in
combination with bed-plate, gage, and levers, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d dayot' January, 1876. I
. HIRAM HITGHOOGK. Witnesses:
W. D. JONES, W. W. GREEN.
