Our invention relates to improvements in a holder for paper bags, wrapping paper and the like, for use in stores, and market stalls.
The object of this invention is to provide a holder for bags and the like adapted for holding the bags in a novel manner, which will insure the bags being held in an accessible position suitable for removing the bags from the holder one at a time; a further object is to provide a holder for holding the bags from tilting, or swinging, by the wind, when used in an open market stall; a still further object is to provide a holder having jaws carrying pins adapted for perforating the en tire bundle of bags, which may be inserted in the holder, so that every bag will be held by the pins; a still further object is to provide a novel locking device for holding the movable jaw in the open position, against the action of a heavy spring; a still further obj ect is to provide means for releasing the looking device, whereby the tension of the spring will force the pins through the bags during the closing of the jaws, a still further object is to provide means for protecting the points of the pins from striking'the metal parts of the holder when the jaws are closed; a still further object is to provide hardened reinforcing plates for preventing the parts subjected to the force of the spring from wearing,
thus permitting the other parts of the holder to be formed of cheaper material and the entire holder manufactured at a lowcost; and a still further object is to provide a base plate having several holders arranged thereon, positioned in a horizontal row whereby bags of different sizes may be held side by side; these together with various other novel features of construction and arrangement of the parts constitute our invention, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Upon the base 1 is secured the fixed jaw 2 of the holder which comprises a single unit having a base plate 3, rigidly secured to saidbase 1 and bearing members 4 and 5 projecting at right angles from the base plate 3 and in which the shaft 8 is mounted. The base plate 3, at its lower end, is provided with a riblO- which is bent at right angles to the base plate 3 and projects outwardly therefrom, andthe outer edge of the rib is provided with teeth 12 against which the bundle of paper bags will rest when secured in the holder.

Mounted upon said shaft 8 is a movable jaw 20, consisting of a front plate 21 having cheek plates 22 and 23 projecting at right angles to the front plate and adapted to be inserted between thebearing members 4 and 5 of the fixed jaw, whereby the movable jaw may be rotated upon the shaft 8 relatively to the fixed jaw. The lower portion of the front plate 21 of the movable aw is provided with a handle 25 for operating the latter. Said frontplate 21 is also provided with two conical pins 27 and 28 which are rigidly secured to said front plate 21, with the points of the the bags, and said pins will force themselves into the bundle in such a'manner that every bag will be held by the pins, from which pins the bags may be torn ofl' one at a time by pulling downwardly upon the bags.

Said spring terminates with the free end 36 whichnormally rests in a notch formed int-he cheek plate 23, and when the movable jaw is in the closed position said free end 36 of the spring also rests in a notch 48 formed in the bearing member 5, as shown in Fig; 1.
The bearing member 5 is provided with a cam surface ,50-over which the free end 36 of the sprin rides when the movable 'aw is bein .L b 3 opened. When the movable jaw is fully open, the free end 36 of the spring drops intoa notch 52 formed in the bearing member 5 and when the free end of the spring. occupies the notch 52 the shouldered will hold the spring against its tendency to close the movable aw, and the notch 40 in the cheekplate 23 occupied by theend 36 of the spring prevents the movable jaw from closing.
The check plate is provided with a cam surface .41 for lifting the free end 36 of the spring out of the notch 52in the bearing plate 5 when it is desired to close the movable aw 20. Duringthe initial closing movement of the movable jaw said cam surface 41 of the cheek plate will slide the end 3Gof the spring radially during the rotating movement of the cheekplate 23, which movement of the spring is made possible by the elongated loop 35 formed upon the spring which permits the' end 36 of thespring to have a radial movement, thus said cam surface 41 will gradually force the free end 36 of the spring outwardly until it is disengaged from the'shoulder 54, when the coiled portion 35 of the spring 30 will move the movable jaw into the closed position and the free end 36 of the spring will again occupy the lower portion of the notch 4L0 and 48 formed in the cheek plate 23 and in the bearing member 5, as shown in Fig. 1.
Said spring 301 is of heavy construction so that it will close the movable j aw with suflisoft metal it is necessary to provide reinforoing parts to prevent the rapldwearing of the,
parts engaged by the spring. The movable jaw 20 is provided with a hardened steel plate 60 which is secured to the under surface of the movable aw by a rivet 61, and by a depressed tongue 62 which enters the V-shaped end formed on said reinforcing plate 60, thus rigidly holding the latter from displacement. The opposite end of the reinforcing plate 60is provided with a bearing portion ()4 which is bent upwardly at right angles to the plate 60 a id forms a surface upon which the loop 35 of the spring 30 rides when it is moved radially.
The bearing member 5 is also provided with a reinforcing hardened steel plate 70, which is secured upon the outside surface of the bearing member 5 by the headof the shaft'8 and is prevented from turning by a tongue 72 formed upon the bearing member 5, which tongue enters a slotted end portion of the reinforcing plate 70. The opposite end of the reinforcing plate is provided with a curved cam surface Tel. corresponding to the shape of the cam surface 50 formed upon the bearing member. 5 ands-aid plate 70 is also provided with a shoulder and a notch corresponding with the shoulder 54 and the notch 52 formed in the bearing member 5 respectively, thus the reinforcing plate 70 prevents the wearing away of the bearing member 5.;
The cheek plates 22 and 23 of the movable jaw are provided with feet which rest upon the base plate 3 when the jaws are closed, thus preventing the points of the pins 14, 2'7 and 28 from being injured by coming in contact with-any metal parts.
' Fig. 8 illustrates a base 32 of sufiicien't length for carrying two or more holders 83 which are positioned so that the shafts S l forming the axes of the movable jaws of the holders extend parallel with the length of the base 82, whereby a number of bags 5350f different sizes may be suspended from the holders and arranged side by side, thus greatly facilitating in selecting a bag of the desired size, asthe bags do not overlap each other,-this feature is of particular advantage when the holdersare used at an open market stall where the wind may blow the bags and tend to disarrange the bundles. Bundles of bags or sheets of wrapping paper are placed with their upper edges between the points of the pins carried by the jaws of the holders, as shown in Fig. 8. The handle of the mov able jaw is then pressed downwardly until the cam forces the end 36 of the spring free of the shoulder 5%, thus permitting the spring to force the movable jaw into-the closed position with the pins projecting into the bags or sheets of wrapping paper from which they may be readily removed one at a time. By arranging several holders upon a single base, different sizes of bags or sheets of paper may be held separately upon the holders.
Various changes may be made in the construction of the parts of the holder without departing from our invention.

A holder comprising a jaw adapted to be held in a fixed position, bearing plates upon said jaw, a shaft mounted in said plates, a movable jaw, cheek plates upon the latter rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a spring tending to force said jaws together, a pin upon one of said jaws adapted to pierce an article placed between the jaws, a foot plate upon one of said plates adapted to strike against the opposite jaw and prevent the point of the pin from striking the jaw.

A holder comprising a jaw adapted to be held in a fixed position, bearing plates upon said jaw, a shaft mounted upon said plates, a movable jaw, cheek plates upon the latter rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a spring coiled around said shaft having one end engaging the fixed aw, said spring hav ing a yieldable end portion rotatably and radially movable relatively to said shaft, a shoulder upon the cheekv plate of the movable jaw against which the free end of the spring engages tending to close the jaws, a shoulder upon the bearing plate for engaging the end portion of the spring when the jaws are open, and a cam surface formed upon the cheek plate for lifting the end of the spring radially to disengage the latter from said shoulder onthe bearing plate upon the initial movement of the movable jaw toward the closed position.

A holder comprising a jaw adapted to be held in a fixed position, bearing plates upon said jaw, a shaft mounted upon said plates, a movable jaw, cheek plates upon the latter rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a spring coiled around said shaft having one end engaging the fixed jaw, said spring having a yieldable end portion rotatably and radially movable relatively to said shaft, a reinforcing plate secured to said movable jaw, said reinforcing plate being of relatively harder material than the movable jaw, said reinforcing plate having a portion interposed between the points of contact of the spring and the movable jaw, and means upon one of said bearing plates for engaging said end portion of the spring when the jaws are in the open position.

A holder comprising a jaw adapted to be held in a fixed position, bearing plates upon said jaw, a shaft mounted upon said plates, a movable jaw, cheek plates upon the latter rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a spring coiled around said shaft having one end engaging the fixed aw, said spring having a yieldable end portion rotatably and radially movable relatively to said shaft, a reinforcing plate secured upon one of said bearing plates, said reinforcing plate being of relatively harder material than the bearing plate, said reinforcing plate having a cam surface thereon over which the end portion of the spring slides, and a shoulder upon said reinforcing plate for engaging the end portion of the spring when the jaws are in the open position.
7. A holder comprising a jaw adapted to be held in a fixed position, bearing plates upon said jaw, a shaft mounted upon said plates, a movable jaw, cheek plates upon the latter positioned between the bearing plates and rotatably mounted upon said shaft,'a
