MARKING DEVICE FOR CAN-COVERS.

To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, IVAR F. WARME and ROBERT A. Bnoon, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively,'-at Syracuse,
in the county of Onondaga, State of New York, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Marking Devices for Can- Covers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates'to new and useful improvements in marking devices, and more articularly toa marking device whlch may be used for placing an identifying mark on a metal can cover or the. like.
An object of the invention is to provide a marking device wherein the implements for impressmg the identifying mark in the cover are movable with the cover at the time when the identifying mark is impressed into the cover.
A further object of the invention is to provide a marking device of the above character with means for feeding the covers one at a time thereto and with means for sustainingthe covers until they are gripped by the implements which impress the 1dent1 fying mark ,in the cover, said sustammg means being withdrawn to permit a movement of the cover with the marking implements at the time when the impression is made in the cover.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a marking device of the above ers after they are marked.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed. p. I I
Inthe drawings, which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention:-
Figure 1 is a side view of the machine having the improvements applied thereto;

In carrying out the invention, the. covers are laced in a stack in a cover holder and are ed from this cover holder one at a time to the marking im lements. The covers are fed by gravity, a er being released b the marking implements and are sustainerl momentarily in position between the marking implements until saidmarking implements have moved to a point where the cover is gripped between the marking implements and then the sustaining finger is completely withdrawn 'so that the cover may move on with the movement of the marking implements until maximum pressure is ut to bear on the cover, the identifying mar fully impressed therein, and then the implements continue their movements, the cover travelingtherewith to a point where the covers are released.- After the covers are released they are brought by gravity into a chute so constructed and arranged as to re-stack the covers, and they may be taken from there for use in connection with closing machines or the like.
While the marking device has been I?!- ferred to as being used for marking covers, it is understood that this term is used purely for descriptive purposes, and that it is intended to include can ends, can caps, as'w-ell as can covers. As a matter of fact, the improved marking device may also be used for marking metal articles of any character where it is desired to stamp or impress in the metal an identifying character.
Referring more in detail to the drawhoriaontal so that the covers stacked therein,

Attached to the rotating disk is a rod wound so as to form ahelix, which is indicated at 6 in the drawings. Cooperating with this helix are suitable supporting guides'for the covers, andlthe covers are dropped one at a time into this helix, and as it rotates it feeds and spaces the covers and releases the same one after the other at equal intervals of time. As shown in Fig. 2 of. the drawings, the covers while they are being fed along by the helix are supported by the guides When the covers are released from-these uides 7 7 and from the rotating helix, they rop into a guideway 8 which carries the covers by gravity between two marking implements 9 and 10. These marking implements 9 and 10' are mounted to rotate. The cover dropping by gravity into "the guideway 8 strikes a ainst the sustaining finger 11 and will be he d by this sustaining finger until the marking implements have returned to the position shown in Fig. 7
where they grip the cover and then the sustaining finger releases the same. 1
The marking implement .10 consists of a supporting head in which one member of a die 12is mounted, said die being held thereinby a suitable means. This may be the male member of the die. The marking implement 10 is provided with a shank ,14 which extends into a suitable socket formed in a shaft 15, and said stem is held in the I shaft by a screw 16. The shaft 15 is mounted in suitable bearings in the frame and is rotated either by handor by power, as de-- sired.
The marking implement 9 is of a similar ,construction and includes a female die 17 which is held' in its socket by a suitable pin 18. The marking implement 9 is also rovided with a stem 14, and this stem is eld in a socket in the shaft 19 by a screw 16.
The shaft 19 is also mounted in suitable bearings in the main frame, and this shaft carries a gear wheel, indicated at 19 in the drawings, which meshes with the gear wheel 19 carried by the shaft 15 so'that the two shafts rotate in exactly the sametiniing but in opposite directions. The shaft 19 rotates-in a clockwise direction, while the shaft 15 rotates in a counterclockwise direction. The can end or cover restin on the sustaining finger 11 is positione so that. the dies 12 and 17 as they come into intermeshin relation with each other will rip the middle of the can cover, and when these dies reach the position shown int Fig. 7 the metal of the coverwill be indented so as to firmly fix in the cover an identifying mark. slot 22 m the lever. A spring 23 presses against this lever and against an admsting bolt 24 as an abutment. By turnin the bolt 24, the tension of this spring may he increased or decreased, as desired. Mounted on the lever 20 is a roller 25 which bears against the cam face 26 formed in the shaft 19. This cam face is shown in full lines. in
finger. 11, the cam face 26 releases the, roller 7 25 and permits the sustaining finger to swing the markback in position to catch the next cover released by the helix. I
The gear wheel 19 meshes with a gear a short shaft 28 mounted in suitable bearings formed in the bracket 2. This short shaft carries a beveled gear 29 "which meshes with a beveled gear 30 on a shaft 31. The shaft31 carries a gear 32 which meshes with a gear 33, and this gear 33 is mounted on a shaft 34.- which carries the releasing disk and the helix. The releasing disk .and the helix will, therefore, be operated in proper timing with the marking implements. After the covers are released from the marking implements, they pass down into a receiving chute.
. This receiving chute consists of side members 35 and a front and to a'greater extent, as at 38. The covers dropping by gravity slide along. this wall and owing to the inclination t ereof 5 these covers when they reach the rear end of the chute will slide one upon the to of the other in'horizontal arrangement w ich restacks the covers. 'The restacked coversrest on the slide 40 which maybe withdrawn at will and the stack removed from' ides.

detail above consisting of the releasing disk and the helix forms no part of. the present invention per se, and it will be understood that other cover feeding devices may be .used, the essential'feature thereof consistng in feeding the covers one after the other "in spaced timed relation to each other so that these covers may be operated upon by the marking implements and then restacked; While, also, the marking devices are shown as operating upon a cover dropped by gravity between the marking devices, it Will be understood that these marking implements may be otherwise arranged, the essential feature here consisting in the opposed dies which travel with the cover at the time that the identifying mark is impressedtherein.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A markin eluding in com ination, coiiperating rotating dies for impressing an identifying mark in the metal of the can end, feeding means for presenting can ends continuously and in succession one after the other to said marking dies, and means for engaging the forward edge of the can ends and timing said can ends relative to the dies.
