This invention relates to improvements in manifolding machines and more particularly in some of its details to improvements in machines embodying a printing mechanism whereby a plurality of copies may be made simultaneously at a single printing'impression.
It is a general object of the invention to provide a machine 1n WlllCh one or more of the copies may be made upon a continuous strip which is automatically fed through the machine as for example where a continuous record is desired of the impressions made by the machine or where additional data is to be individually supplied and to provide mechanism whereby this may be accomplished without impairing the eflicienoy of the machine in making impressions on individual articles such as envelopes.
It is a further object to adapt printing mechanism of a single impresslon type for use with continuous strips such that the strips will be automatically fed into proper alignment with the printing mechanism as the machine is operated.
"It is a further object to provide a mechanism of the character described simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture and reliable in its operation.
It i'sa further object to provide a device which if'desired may beconstructed by the interconnecting into a unitary machine of standard addressing machine with a mechanically separable operating unit whereby the combined machine may be readily operated with ease and efliciency with a minimum 0 labor and without damage to the addressing machine should it be desired subsequently to use the latter alone The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying this invention;

In the drawings the numeral 1 designates generally a stand adapted to support at its upper end a casing 2 carrying the printing mechanism of an addressing machine such as is more fully described in my co-pending apphcation Serial No. 32,019, filed May 22, 1925, now Patent N 0. 1,733,329, issued Oct. 29, 1929. This may comprise, as shown at 3, means for supporting printing elements & and hav ng a presser head 5 carried by an arm 6, pivoted as at 7 to permit the presser head to be brought down into registry with the printing element. This arm may be operated through the medium of a curved link 9 connected by a link 10 to a foot treadle 11. The machine is provided with ribbon supports 13, 14 adapted to carry a printing ribbon between the printing element and the presser head such that by the superposition of an envelope or other sheet upon the print- 1 foot treadle 11.
With the type of machine here illustrated, there is provided as at 15, a receptacle for successive printing elements to be fed through themachine and a second receptacle as shown. at 16 for the receipt of printing elements which have been used by the machine. The machine is designed automatically for the taking of the printing elements in the receptacle 15 one at a time and feeding them through the machine past theprinting, point toward the receptacle 16 with each stroke of the presser head. A spring 17 returns the presser head to its elevated position when the treadle is released.
For a more complete disclosure of a feeding mechanism for printing elements andembodying a construction and arrangement similar to the present disclosure, reference is 5 made to the Patent No. 764,660 for an addressing machine issued to J S. Duncan on July 12, 1904.
The numeral 50 designates a supporting plate carrying at one end a supply receptacle 51 designed to supporta supply of acontinuous strip of paper which may if desired have printed forms thereon with weakened lines between the forms and control apertures bearing a definite positional relation to the form.
This strip is preferably folded back and forth upon itself at the weakened lines into a zigzag formation. It may be composed of one web or a plurality of webs superposed upon each other and interfolded together to 40 make one or more carbon copies asmay be desired. I preferably use this arrangement of the paper supply as it permits the forms .to lie fiat and in compact space relation, but obviously rolls may be utilized if desired. Since the strip may comprise a single web or a plurality thereof, the word will herein be utilized to signify the entire strip whether or not it becomposed of a plurality of webs.
The receptacle 51 may be provided with a Td00r 52 hinged as at 53 for the ready insertion of the supply, and the strip itself is car ried over the end of the plate 50 passing around a guide roll 54 at the top of the receptacle. The strip is thence carried over the l plate 50 through suitable constraining guides 55, 56', 57 and 58 to a feeding mechanism 60 situated at the other end of the plate 50. This feeding mechanism may be carried within a housing 61 carried by the plate 50 at the end remote from the receptacle 51.
The plate is designed to rest upon the upper face 62 of casing 2 with the receptacle 51 upon one side and the housing 61 on the other, and the inner faces 63 and 64 respec- 45. tive'ly of the receptacle and housing are so spaced as to'engageihe sides of the casing 2 to assist in holding the plate 50 in proper location. The plate 50 has'its central portion as at 65 cut out immediately over the print- 50 ing position, that is beneath the presser head.
The guides'55, 56, 57 and 58 are arranged to carry the strip directly over the printing position and above the printing ribbon thereon.
. The feeding mechanism comprises in general a roller 70 journalled in brackets 71 car- .ried by the plate 50 and cooperating discs 72 carried on shafts 73, journalled in the side walls 74 of the feed housing 61. The discs 72 are in alignment with the control apertures in the strip and are desi the discs arerotated, the strip is fed until the control apertures come into registry with the point of contact with the discs and roller 70, whereupon the feeding ceases. Means are provided for again gripplng-the strip to start ed so that as the next feeding operation which means may take the form of lugs .75 fixed upon the disc and adapted to engage the strips at the side of the apertures. These lugs are preferably so positioned that the strips will be firmly gripped eration. I
It will be understood that with the mechanism just described, the strip will be fed the distance between successsive control apertures with each revolution of the disc, and
mechanism is provided to effect such revolution with each operation of the presser head. The discs 72 and the-roller may if desired be geared together to insure their movement with the same-peripheral speed. This is particularly advantageous Where a plurality of strips are employed to insure thatthey move together.
To operate the disc 72, there is fixed upon the shaft 73 a gear 76 meshing with a gear 77 carried by a shaft 78 also journalled in the side walls 74. J ournalled upon the shaft 78 is an arm 79, carrying a pawl 80 adapted to engage a ratchet 81 fixed upon the shaft 78.
The direction of this ratchet is such that the 1 just at the close of the feeding oparm 79 and gear 77 will be operatively connectedtogether to feed the paper toward the left as seen in Fig. 3, but will be disconnected to permit the movement of the arm in a reverse direction. A spring pressed (log 82 may be arrangedto engage the teeth of the gear 81 to prevent retrograde motion thereof and hence to. prevent retrograde motion of the feed.
A lever 90 pivoted as at- 91 to a bracket 92 supported from the plate 50 has one end thereof as at 93 extending beneath the presser, head arm 6 and positioned to be-engaged by the latter as it is depressed and having its other end 94 connected by a link 95 to the arm 79, and a spring 96 connects at one end to the arm 94 and at the other end to the housing 61. As will be seen from the drawing, the action from this spring is such that the arm 93 will be urged upwardly by the spring causing the ratchet 81 to engage the pawl 80 to move the'strip feed forwardly until the arm 90 engages'a stop 97 as shown diagrammatically in dotted outline in Figure 3. Upon the depression of the presser head, the arm 93 is depressed causing the pawl to idle over the ratchet during which time the retrograde movement of the feed derstood thatas' the strip is fed over the plate.

In order to effect this mechanical motion, there maybe mounted upon the plate 50 a cylindrical housing 130 carrying a sliding block 131 pressed upwardly by a spring 132 and having its upper limit adjustably determined by a screw 133 locked by a nut 13 1. The block 131-carries a pin 135 having on one end a pawl face 136 in position to engage teeth 137 on the handle .123. of the adjacent carbon roll while the reversesideof the pin-135 is .in position to to prevent a reverse feed of the carbon.
Under certain circumstancesit may be desired to employ the machine with a plurality of strips, certain of which are devoid of feedcontrol apertures. Suchconstruction is eminently suitedto a situation where it is not necessary to have forms printed upon one of the strips or where some'other' means are employedfor maintaining the registry of 'the forms. 'In Fig. 6 is illustratedmore in detail a construction suitable for the acc0mplishment of such a result. As will be seen, they be engaged by" the presser head arm 6 when the latter is depressed. It may be desired to print upon continuous strips a greater amount of information than should appear upon the envelopes. It is possible to accomplish this selective manifolding result by inserting a mask 170 above the uppermost carbon strip to prevent contact between it and the envelope. This mask maytake the form of a small celluloid strip firmly held in place by and upon the plate 50.
As illustrated, the plate 170 has ears 171 fitting beneath the ends of the housing 120. It will be obvious that any type of support from the plate 50 may be utilized and to this end, a special screw clamp may be employed such as is shown in the drawing. This may comprise a spring arm 172 held in place and tensioned by a screw 173. In any event, the mask should be readily detachable to facilitate the feeding of the machine.
With the above construction, it is thought that the operation of the machine will be clear. The strip supply is inserted in the receptacle 51 and the strip is carried over the guide roller 54 and beneath the guides 55, 56, 57 and 58, the unapertured strip if present being carried beneath the bar 150 and the apertured strip being carried'above the plate 105. As the strips are carried over the printing position, carbon sheets from the rolls are interleaved between them with the carbon faceuppermost. Moreover, should it be desired to utilize the machine at the same time in addressing envelopes, a carbon sheet will also extend above theuppermost web of the strip. The webs are now carried through the feeding mechanism and one of them may be diverted into a locked record compartment if it be so desired. With the machine set as above, the proper printing blocks are inaddres sing but of printing the.
serted in the magazine or supply receptacle. With each depression of the foot pedal, spring 96 will be actuated for a feeding move ment although the feeding movement does not take place at that time. The impression will be made by the impact and pressure of the presser block upon the printing plate through the various webs and carbons. When the presser head arm is about to complete its downward movement, it engages the lever 103 to lift the strips off of the pins 100 by means of the plate 105. This causes a slight feedingo'f the strip from the supply, furnishing a slack necessary to carry the apertures beyond the. pins at the beginning of the next feeding movement. This slack is constrained to come-from the supply since 4 the reverse movement of the feeding mechanism is restrained and the strips thus are held by the grip of the feed and by the grip of the presser block itself upon the printing surface.
During this downward movement of the presser head in performing a printing op eration, it will be observed, referring particularly to Fig. 4, that the head will contact with the rearwardly extndingend of the pin or pawl 135, thus moving the, pawl face 136 downwardly freely over the teeth or serrations 137. However, due to the pointed for- 'mation and the adjacent inclined surface of the pawl face 136, and tothe shape of the teeth 137, this downward movement of the pin is merely idle and the pawlv face slides freely over the teeth. There is enough yield in the connectionofthe parts to permit this movement.
Subsequently upon release of the treadle, as the presser head arm arises, the pawl 80 engages the ratchet 81 and under the influence of the spring 96 commences the forward feeding of the strip. This takes up the slack which hasbeen furnished in the webs by the movement of the plate and again brings the striptaut but before this occursythe control apertures have passed the point of reg istry with the pins. The feed continues until the nextset of control apertures have reached the pins which occurs simultaneously with the arrival of one set of control apertures into registry with the grip of the feed disks 72 against the roll 70, thus temporarily checking strip feed. V During this upward move- 'ment, moreover, the pawl face136 urged up-- drawing shallbe interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope ofthe invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i v 1. A printing device for use with continuous strips having feed control apertures therein comprising a support for the strip supply, a feed mechanism for feeding'the strips, a printing mechanism between thelfeed and the supply, pins between the printing;
mechanism and the supply in alignment with the control apertures and adapted to penetrate the apertures when in registry therewith, and means operable by the printing mechanism for operating the feedand for releasing the strips from the pins.
2. A printing device for use with cont-inuous strips having feed control apertures therein comprising a supportfor the strip supply, a feed mechanism for feeding the strips, a printing mechanism between the feed and the supply, comprising, a reciprocable presser head and means for-supporting a printing block, pins between the printing mechanism and the supply in alignment with the apertures and adapted to penetrate the apertures when in registry therewith, and
means operable by the printing mechanismfor operating the feed and for releasing the strips from the pins.
3. A printing device for use with continuous strips having feed control apertures therein comprising a support for the strip supply, a' feed mechanism for feeding the strips, a printing mechanism between the feed and the supply, comprising a reciprocable presser head and means for supporting a printing block, pins between the printing mechanism and the supply in alignment with the control apertures and adapted to penetrate the apertures when in registry therewith, and means operable by the printing mechanism for operating the feed and for releasing the strips from the pins and for feeding a fresh printing block to said support.

A printing device for use with continuous strips having feed control apertures comprising'a support for the strip supply, a feed mechanism for feeding the strip including feed disks, a printing mechanism between the feed and the supply, comprising a support for printing blocks and a presser head, means for operatively connecting said discs to said presser head for operation thereby and a pair of rolls adapted to support a carbon sheet above said strip and means actuated from said printing mechanism for rotating one of said rolls, pins in alignment with the control apertures in the strips, guides to constrain the strips into contact with the pins whereby the pins will penetrate them when in registry therewith, and means operable by the presser head for lifting the strip off the pins before the beginning of the next feeding movement while the strip is held against retrograde movement at the printing point.
28. A device of the character described adapted for use with a printing mechanism having a moving head, comprising, a support adapted for attachment to the printing mechanism, strip guides to guide a strip through the printing mechanism when said support is attached thereto, a receptacle for a strip supply, pins disposed in the normal pathway of said strip defined by said guides and adapt-ed to enter control apertures in the strip when in registry therewith, means for freeing the strip from the pins, a lever mounted upon said support in position to be engaged by said moving head when said support is attached to said printing mechanism and connected to said strip freeing means whereby the movement of the head will free the strips.
29. A device of the character described adapted for use with a printing mechanism having a moving head, comprising, a sup port adapted for attachment to the printing mechanism, strip guides adapted to guide a strip through the printing mechanism when said support is attached thereto, a receptacle for a strip supply, pins disposed in the normal pathway of said strip defined in said guides and adapted to enter control apertures in the strip when in registry therewith, a pivoted bar beneath said strip at said pins adapted to raise said strip over said pins, a lever mounted upon said support in position to be operated by the movement of said head when said support is in position, and connections between said lever and said bar whereby the movement of the former will operate, the latter.

A device of the character described adapted for use with a printing mechanism having a moving head, comprising, a support adapted for attachment to the printing mechanism, strip guides adapted to guide a strip throughthe printing mechanism when said support is attached thereto, a receptacle for a strip supply, pins disposed in the normal pathway of said strip defined by said guides and adapted to enter control apertures in the strip when in'registry therewith, a pivoted bar beneath said strip at said pins adapted to raise said strip over said pins, a lever mounted upon said support in position to be operated by the movement of said head when said support isin position and, connections between said lever and said bar whereby the movement of the former will operate the latter, said lever being arranged to free said strip from said pins at the extreme clownward movement of the moving head.
31. A device of the character described adapted for use with printing mechanism having a moving head comprising in combination a support adapted to be attached to said printing mechanism, guides for directing a'eontinuous'strip through said printing mechanism when said support is attached thereto, a feed mechanism for moving said strip through said guides, a lever pivoted to said support having an arm adapted to be engaged by said moving head when said support is attached to said printing mechanism and connections between said lever and said feed mechanism whereby the operation of said moving head actuates said feed. v
32. A device of the character described adapted for use with printing mechanism having a moving head comprising, in combination, a'support adapted tobe attached to said printing mechanism, guides for directing a continuous strip through said printing mechanism when said support is attached thereto, a feed mechanism for moving said strip through said guides, a lever pivoted to said support having an arm adapted to be engaged by said moving head, when said support is attached to said printing mechanism and connections between said lever and said feed mechanism whereby the operation of said moving head actuates said feed, said connections including a ratchet and spring whereby the downward movement of the head will tension said spring and the return movement permit the spring to actuate the feed.
33. A device of the character described adapted for use with a printing mechanism having a moving head, comprising, a support adapted to be attached to the printing mechanism, a roller journalled in said sup port, guides for guiding a strip through said printing mechanism and to said roller when the support is attached to said printing mechanism, discs cooperating with said roller adapted to be in alignment with feed control apertures in saidstrip, a lever'mounted upon said support having an arm adapted to cooperate with said moving head when said support is fixed in position on said printing mechanism and connections between said lever and said disc whereby the movement of the former operates the latter.
34. A device of the character described adapted for use.with aprinting mechanism having a moving head, comprising, a support adapted to be attached to the printing mechanism, a roller journalled in said support, guides for guiding a strip through said printing mechanism and to said roller when the support is attached to said printing mechanism, discs cooperating. with said roller adapted to be in alignment with feed control apertures in said strip, a lever mounted upon said support having an arm adapted to cooperate with said moving head when said support is fixed in position on said printing mechanism and connections between said lever and said disc whereby the movement of the former operates the latter to perform one complete revolution.

A device of the character described adapted for use with a printing mechanism having a moving head comprising a support adapted for attachment to the printing mech: anism, guides adapted to constrain a strip past the printing mechanism when said support is in place thereon, a roller journalled upon said support, discs also journalled upon said support to contact with said roller in alignment with control apertures in the strip, a lever mounted upon said support in position to be engaged by said moving head during the movement of the latter, and a motion multiplying means for operating said discs from said lever, said means including a pinion upon the shaft of said disc, a gear journalled to mesh therewith, a ratchet connecting to said gear and a pawl carried upon an arm connected to said lever whereby the movement of said lever will drive said disc one complete revolution with each depression of the moving head.
37. A device of the character described adapted for use with a printing mechanism having a moving head comprising a support adapted for attachment to the printing mechanism, guides adapted to constrain a strip past the printing mechanism when said support is in place thereon, a roller journalled upon said support, discs also journalled upon said support to contact with said roller in alignment with control apertures in the strip, a lever mounted upon said support in position to be engaged by said moving head during the movement of the latter, and a motion multiplying means for operating said discs from said lever, said means including a pinion upon a shaft of said disc, a gear journalled to mesh therewith, a ratchet connected to said gear and a pawl carried upon an arm connected to said lever whereby the movement of said lever will drive said disc one complete revolution with each depression of the moving head, and feed startingmechanism adapted tocome into engagement with the strip to grip the same against the roller at the completion of the feeding movement.
38. A device of the character described adapted for attachment to a printing mechanism and for supplying continuous strips thereto, having feed control apertures therein, comprising, a support, a strip supply receptacle and a feed mechanism on opposite ends of saidsupport and adapted to rest upon opposite sides of said printing mechanism when attached thereto, and strip guides for constraining the movement of the strip from the supply past the position to be occupied by the printing mechanism and through the feed mechanism, a lever carried by said support in position to be operated by the printing mechanism when attached in position and connections between said lever andsaid feed mechanism for operating the latter by the movement of the lever.
39. A device of the character described adapted for attachment to a printing mechanism and for supplying continuous strips thereto having feed control apertures therein, comprising, a support, a strip supply receptacle and a feed mechanism on opposite ends of said support and adapted to rest upon opposite sides of. said printing mechanism when. attached thereto, and strip guides for constraining the movement of the strip from the supply past the position to be occupied by the printing mechanism and through the feed mechanism, said feed mechanism comprising a roll j'ournalled upon said support and discs journalled to cooperate therewith to grip the strip inalignment with feed control apertures therein and means carried by said support for driving said disc by the movement of the moving head when the support is in position upon the printing mechanism. 40. A device of the character described adapted for attachment to a printing mechanism and for supplying continuous str ps thereto having feed control apertures therein,
posite sides of said printing mechanism when attached thereto, and strip guides for constraining the movement of the strip from the supply past the position to be occupied by the printing mechanism and through the feed mechanism, said feed mechanism comprising a roll journalled upon said support and discs journalled to cooperate therewith to grip the strip in alignment with feed control apertures therein and means for gripping said strips out of alignment with the control apertures at the close of the feeding movement, and means carried by said support for driving said disc by the movement of the moving head when the support is in position upon the printing mechanism.

A device of the character described adapted for use with a printing mechanism having a moving head, comprising, a support arranged for attachment to said printing mechanism, a strip supply upon one end of said support, a feed mechanism upon the opposite end thereof, guides carried thereby to constrain the strip for movement from the supply past the printing mechanism and through the feeding mechanism, a plurality of pins upon said supply in' the path of feed control apertures in the strip, a lever pivoted to said support and adapted to be engaged by the moving head of said printing mechanism when said support is positioned thereon, means actuated by said lever for raising said strip from said pins.

A device of the character described adapted for use with a printing mechanism having a moving head, comprising, a support arranged for attachment to said print- 1ng mechanism, a strip supply upon one end of said support, a feed mechanism upon the opposite end thereof, guides carried thereby to constrain the strip for movement from the supply past the printing mechanism and through thefeeding mechanism,a pluralityof pins upon said supply in the path of feed control apertures in the strip, a lever pivoted to said support and adapted to be engaged by the moving head of said printing mechanism when said support is positioned thereon,
means actuated by said lever for raising said 4 strip from said pins, said feed mechanism being adapted to grip the strip to prevent retrograde movement thereof at the time the strlp is freed from the pins.

A device of the character described adapted for use with a printing mechanism having a moving head comprising a support arranged to be attached to said printing mechanism, a strip supply and a strip feed at opposite ends thereof, pins at the supply end of said support, strip guides adapted to lead the strip from said supply past said pins, past the position to be occupied by said printing arranged to be attached to said printing mechanism, a strip supply and a strip fee at opposite ends thereof, pins at the supply end of said support, strip guides adaptedto lead the strip from said supply past said pins, past the position to be occupied by said printlng mechanism, when the support is attached thereto and through said feed, a lever for freeing the strips from said pins and a lever for operating said feed mechanism, each of said levers having an arm which when said support is attached to said printin mechanism will be positioned to be engage by said moving head to free said strip from said pins and to actuate the feeding mecha- Iiism.
