Reference is now made to Figure 2, where v in it will'be'seen that a boom 15 is disposed traverses the. gear 18 in a reverse directionv 'is likewise caused to rotate, and consequently rotates the sprocket wheel 7 21. Motion is transmitted from-the sprocket wheel 21 to the shaft 14 by virtue of the chain 22 and sprocket wheel 20.
It will be seen that withtherotation of the shaft 14, the booms 15 will be caused to swing into vertical position, due to the fact that the gear 19 traverses the arcuateshaped gear 18, an'd,aswill be understood such movement of the booms will elevatethe boat 33 into a vertical position.
With the booms 15 in elevated position, the'weight of the boat is-disposed upon the carriages 4. and by operation of a winchor other suitable means the cable 9 may be slackened, allowing the'davittoslide downwardly in the rails 1 into close; proximity of the water. Furthermanipulation of the hand-wheel 28, by an operator within the boat 33, will effect a further movement; of the booms 15, until they assumea POSlt/IOD. substantially horizontal to the vessel 2, as
indicated at A in-Fig. 1. Thus,the; boat 33 is held a spaced distance from the'vessel 2, and by reason of the short connection between the boat 33 and booms: 15, the boat 33 i's held against excessiveiswinging movement in any direction. 7
After launching ofthe boat 33 ,the'davit is returned to its uppermostrposition, by operation of the winch. In this position, it
would be'well to explain, that the booms 15 are still in their outwardly swung position. Relation of'the hand wheel 32 will transmit rotary movement to the gear 19 since the clutch 29 is inefiective in rearward movement ofthe. booms. Therefore, the gear 19 to that through which it passed in outward movement of the booms, and consequently brings the davit into its upon the vessel 2.' Y H I V By providing the float 6 at the' lower ex original position tremity of the supports 5, a more steady. launching of thefboat 33 is :eifected, since" the fioat will cause movement, of the davit to correspond to that of the waves or water, in which a boat is being launched.
I claim:
1. In a davit, a support, guide rails thereon, a carriage slidable in said guide rails, booms carried by said carriage, means carried by said booms for swinging and fixedly positioning said booms relative to said carriage, and means for raising and lowering said carriage within said rails.
2. A davit comprising a supporting structure, vertically disposed guide rails, a carriage, said carriage having rollers adapted to be received within said guide rails, booms carried by said carriage, means carried by said booms for swinging and fixedly positioning said booms relative to said carriage, and means to raise and lower said carriage.
3. A davit comprising a-supporting structure, vertically disposed guide rails, a carriage, said carriage having rollers adapted to be received within said guide rails, booms carried by said carriage, said booms having an arcuate gear, a second gear in mesh therewith, and means carried by said booms for operating said first and second named gears.
4. A davit comprising a supporting structure, vertical guide rails thereon, a carriage slidable thereon, swinging booms carried by said carriage, said booms being enlarged and.
having an internal arcuate gear, a gear mounted upon said carriage and in mesh with said arcuate shaped gear, and means carried by said booms for operating said gears.
5. A davit comprising a supporting structure, spaced parallel guide rails carried thereby, supports slidably mounted within said rails, a pair of shafts connecting said supports, a pairof booms swingably mounted upon one of said shafts, sprocket wheels carried by each of said shafts, a chain trained about said sprockets, an arcuate gear carried by each of said booms, a gear carried by one of said shafts and in mesh with said arcuate shaped gear, and meanscarried by said booms for operating said sprocket wheels.
6. A davit comprising a supporting structure, spaced parallel guide rails carried thereby, supports slidably mounted within,
said rails, a pair of shafts connecting said supports a pair of booms swingably mounted upon oneof said shafts, sprocket wheels carried by each of said shafts, a chain trained about said sprockets, an arcuate gear carried by one of said shafts and in'mesh with said arcuate-shaped gear, a clutch-con- .necting' said last named gear and said sprocket wheel, a gear carried by said other named shaft, a rotatable shaft carriedby said booms, a, worm gear fixed upon one end of saidshaft and in mesh with the last named gear, means for operating said shaft to effectoutward swinging movement of said boomsand means for operating said other--
