'To all whom *it-mayconcerm nular chamber surrounding the conical bearing of a hollow faucet-plug, provided with an internal diaphragm 5 and myinvention consists in extending the internal diaphragmv downward from the upper end of the faucet-plug 'to a point opposite the lower boundary of the external filter-chamber, then extending it laterally to one side of the plug, and in providing a series of lateral openings in the plug, and corresponding openings in the bearing-wall of the plug, which is also the internal wall of the 'annular filter-chamber, whereby the chamberl formed inside the hollow plug constitutes the passage for conveying fluid from the supplypipe directly into the lower part of the filter chamber beneath the filtering-body therein contained. l, A
In my invention this internal chamber of the faucet performs the double function' of admit. ting water directly into the upper part of the filtering-chamber, or directlyinto the lower part of the filtering-chamber, at the pleasure of the operator, and thereby dispenses with the necessity of establishing any ,verticalpas-v sage outside the plug-.bearing for supplying water to the lower part of the'filterchamber. The accompanying drawings are as follows: Figure l is a vertical section through the center of my faucet-pl ug and ltering-chamber. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the line am@ on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa transverse section through the line y y on Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings', A represents a hollow conical faucet-plug. A portion of the interior of the hollow plug is partitioned ott' by the diaphragm a, for the purpose of establishing th'e induction-chamber d, while the re; mainder of the hollow space within the plug constitutes the outlet-passage c. The faucetplug is `seated in the conical bearing d, which Y.constitutes the vinner wall of theaunular'filtering-chamber e.
The lower part of the filtering-chamberis provided externallyl with a malescrewfthread,
which-engages-a correspondingfemale thread upon the inside of the cap e2. This cap has an annularly-recessed shoulder forv engaging the annular packing-ring e3, and the wall d of the conicallplug-cbamber is-provided with the external collar di, for engaging another packing' ring, d2, interposed between the collar dland the inside of the cap e2. A The packing ci makes a tight joint between the shell of the filteringchamber and the cap, and the packing d2 makes a tight, jointv between the collar d1 on the exterior of theA conical plugfseat and the inside of the cap, which is perforated at the point to receive the end of the conical seat v I The filtering material f is contained in the annular box f1, the upper and lower sides of which are perforated, vas shown at f2. The interior of the ilteriilg-chamber c is counterbored to receive the filter-box f1, which is held in position by the inner edge ofthe cap-shoulder. The upper part of the induction-chamber b has two lateral perforations, b1 and b2.'
The lower end of the induction-chamber has another perforation, b3, which is immediately under4 the perforation b1 In the positionin which the parts are shown in the drawing, the perforation b1 is immediately opposite the suppl y-ppe g, while the perforation b3 isimniediately opposite a corresponding aperture, g1, in thewall of the plug-seat, so that water discharged into the induction-chamber from the supply-pipe g is discharged through the apertures b3 and g1 into the lower part of the filtering-chamber. Byl giving the plug va quarterturn the perforation b2 will be brought opposite the supply-pipe g, and in that, case the perforation b1 will coincide with the perforation g2 in the'wall d. In 'this case the uid supplied through the pipe g will be discharged from the induction-chamber b, through the.
'In the position shown in the drawing, Huid p discharged into the lower part of the filteringchainberpasses, `upward through the flterf into the upper part ofthe filtering-chamber,
i and from thence, through the Vapertureh in the wall d and the aperturec1L in the conical plug, into the outlet-passage cof the plug.
`In the otherposition described, iludds chargedinto the upper partici the filteringchamberpasses downward" through the filter into the lower part of `the ltering-chamber,
` and from thence, through the perforation h in the wall d and the perforation c2 in the plug, into the outlet-passager, from whence" it is discharged, as before. i i
By the described organization of `the parts of my faucet-filter I am able to construct with special economy a faucetfllter in which uid maybe discharged through the filtering material in either an upward or a downward direction, at pleasure. i t y I claim as my invention y `1.
