One of the objects of the invention is to provide a tight and advantageous steam joint of the class specified.

Referring to the dra-wings, and particularly to Fig. l, I show a rotary paper drier or drying cylinder 1, particularly adapted for use in paper making machines, and an inlet 2 for the steam, and also show a steam supply pipe 3 running to the inlet2 so that steam may enter the chamber 4 of the latter and pass thence into the chamber 5 of the drying cylinder. The cylinder l rotates relatively to the inlet 2 and in accordance with my invention, I provide a joint device or connection such as a packing ring 6u between the cylinder 1 and inlet 2, and this packing ring 6 is composed of material which will make a tight joint between the two members, and also lubricate the same.
I find such a. material to beeither carbon or graphite or some composition of one or the other, or some material impregnated with one or the other. Such a joint device or packing 'ring so composed will permit relative rotation between the two members and will yalso lubricate them by reason of the lubricating qualities of the carbon or graphite.
As a preferred arrangement the packing ring 6 is made with oneat face 7 which comes in contact with the outer faceof the flange 8 on the drier 1 and also with a curved or convex surface 9 contacting with a correspondingly curved or convex surface 1() on 1924. seria no. 719,011.

This member 14 is preferably tubular so as to accommodate the inlet pipe 12 and is preferably cast on a cross partition or wall 15 integral with the cylindric wall of the inlet 2. The pipe 12 is extended through the member 14 and provided with an opening 16 opening into chamber 17 formed at the end of member 2 by partition 15, and an outlet drain pipe 18 is connected with chamber 17 so as to receive the water drained through pipe 12.
The member 2 is provided with a head 19 to which the pipe 12 is secured as by bolt 20, anda spring 21 is provided and arranged to fit in a recess orsocket 22 in head 19. Spring `21 has itsk outer end fitted against an abutment 23 on tubular member 24 which is fitted into a ring or collar 25 on an upright tubular support 26. c y
By this arrangement the spring 21Apresses against head'19 of inlet member 2 and therefore has the effect of forcing member' 2 against packing ring 6 and the latter against cylinder head 8, and thereby maintains atight `oint. y J Thus it will be seen that the drier is proviked with a tight joint which automatically lubricates itself without the use of oil, and which also permit-s twisting or angular movement of the drier relatively to the inlet. It will also be seen that the wear of the packing ring forming the joint is automatically taken up and that when this wear becomes considerable, a hew packing ring may be put in place, thereby making it unnecessary to suppl a new drier or inlet or parts thereof.
`In the 'construction shown in Fig. 2, the drier 1 and inlet 2 are provided with an inlet packing ring 6 as in the previous arrange ment, and the steam pipe 3 is as before, together with the drain pipe 12 and outlet drain 18. i y
The arrangement shown in F ig. 2, however, diifers in that it has means for equalizing the pressure in the drier l and inlet 2, so that that pressure will not vary as the steam pressure varies, as is the case in the arrangement of Fig. 1. This arrangement conveniently comprises a diaphragm 30 located at the end of inlet 2, being conveniently held in position by ring 31 secured to the end of inlet 2 by bolts E32-32, which also hold head 19a of inlet 2 in place. A by-pass duct or passage 33 is provided in inlet 2, connecting chamber 4 with chamber 34 formed at the end of inlet 2. Thus steam pressure will be ,exerted on diaphragm 30 in a direction opposite to that in which it is exerted in drier 1, and therefore the ressure on the opposite sides of packing ring 6 will be equalized. A spring 35 is preferably provided and located in socket 22 in head 19, and this spring 35 has its outer end acting against a disk 36 carried by dial hragm 30 and secured thereto by another 40 secured to collar 25 on member 26. hus pressure is exerted by spring 35 tending to form and maintain the st eam joint tight.
It will be understood that changes and -modifications may be made without departingvfom the spirit of the invention.

1. The combination with a rotary steam drier and an inlet therefor, of a joint between the same comprising a joint device composed in whole or in art of carbon or graphite.
2. The combination with a rotary steam drier and an inlet therefor of a packing ring interposed between said drier and inlet and forming a joint between the same, said packing ring being composed in whole or in part of carbon orgraphite.
3. The combination with a rotary steam drier and an inlet therefor, of a joint between the same comprising a joint device madedn whole or in part of carbon or graphite, said device having a curved surface permitting angular movement between said drier and inlet.
4. The combination with a rotary steam drier and an inlet therefor df a joint device for said members made in whole or in part of graphite, and spring means tending to exert pressure to produce and maintain a tight join drier and an inlet therefor of a joint device for said members made in whole or in part of graphite, and springs means tending to exert pressure to produce and maintain a tight joint, said spring means being at the end of the inlet. i f
6. The combination of a rotary steam drier and an inlet therefor of a carbon or graphite material joint device between said members and means for equalizing the steam pressure on the opposite sides of said joint or device.

The combination of a rotary steam drier and an inlet therefor, of a carbon or graphite material joint device interposed between said members and spring means forming a tight joint, said spring means being provide at the rear end of the inlet member and fitted in a socket inthe head thereof, and a, support for the outer end of said spring means.
