This invention relates to a darby for the use of plasterers, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a tool of the class referred to for levelling and straightening out plaster when applied, and further acting during the levelling and straightening operation as a collector for the portions of the plaster removed thereby preventing such portions from dropping upon the floor, resulting in a saving of material, that is the plaster.

Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a darby for the use of plasterers which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, light in weight, compact, quickly and conveniently handled for levelling and straightening purposes, acting as a collector for the removed portions of the plaster during the use of the tool, resulting in a saving of material, as the latter is prevented from dropping to the floor as the dropped material is useless, and inexpensive to manufacture.

l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the. scope of the claims hereunto appended.l

The body of the darby can be formed of any suitable metallic material of the desired gauge, but preferably the material employed is aluminum, due to the lightness thereof and which will permit of the plasterer to conveniently handle the tool during the levelling and straightening operation.V

rlhe darby comprises a flat, rectangular levelling and straightening member 1 formed with a rectangular slot 2 having the side edges thereof equally spa-ced from the side edges of the member 1. The outer end 3 of the slot 2 is positioned nearer the outer end 4 of the member 1 than the inner end 5y of the slot 2 is positioned with respect to the inner end 6 of the member l.

Formed integral with the member l and projecting from 'the outer face thereof is an extension 7 of Ufshaped cross section and which has oppositely disposed, beveled ends S, 9. The extension 7 provides a collecting chamber 10 for the portions of the plaster removedduring the levelling and straightening operation. portions the removed plaster will not drop to the floor as when dropped is useless. Aft-e1' the removed portions of the plaster partly or completely fill the collector or the chamber provided by the extension 7 the plasterer removes the contents of the collector and theV contents can be used again and under such conditions the'darby provides for a saving in material and which would not be the case if the removed portions of the plaster fell to the floor or scaiolding.`

Secured to the member 1 at a point between the' rear end 5 ofthe slot 2 and the rear end Gofmember lis a handle 11 which is of a length greater than the height of the collector formed byy the extension 7. The handle 11 is disposed A at the longitudinal median of the member 1. The extension 7 projects an equi-distance from each side of the longitudinal median of the member 1.

' The darby is an unusually eflicient one as it insures a quick levelling and-straightening action of the plaster i when the tool is used, and furthermore as before stated acts as acollector for the portions of the plaster removed during the operation of the straightening and levelling, and therefore it is thought the many advantages of a darby inaccordanee with this invention can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of As the extension 'i' collects such Y said extension and one end of said member.

A darby comprising a levelling member provided with a slot, an open, hollow extension integral with and projecting from the outer face of said member, said extension registering with the walls of the slot, and a handle connected to and projected from the outer face of said member at a point adjacent said extension.

A darby comprising a levelling member having a slot extending lengthwise thereof, an extension integral with and projecting `from the outer face of said member, said extension registering with the walls of said slot and providing a collector, and a handle projecting from the outer face of said member and interposedbetween one end of said extension and one end of said member, said extension being of U-shape in cross section.
