One object of the inventionis to provide a combined locking and center pin structure for connecting the body and truck holsters of railway cars, which is of rugged design and may be readily applied to andremoved from the holsters and has exceptionally great tensile strength to oppose forcible separation of the holsters and also great resistance against shearing action, wherein the combined locking and center pin structure comprises a pair of pin members which are separately and successively applied to the lholsters to facilitate the assembling operation' and are adapted to interlock to form a complete pin element, one of thepin membersvalso interlocking with one of the holsters to prevent relative rotation of the complete pin structure with respect to said bolster and accidental disengagement of the complete pin.
Another object of the invention is to provide a two partcoinbined locking and center pin for connectingthe body and truck holsters of a railway car, wherein one of the pin members has shouldered engagement ywith both holsters to prevent'relat-ive separation thereof and the other member also prevents separation of thebolsters when the same are rotated relatively to each other by shouldered engagement respectively with one of the holsters and the lirst namedmember.Y

In carrying out my invention, I provide the body bolster, the truck 'bolster and the bearingbloclr 13 with alin'ed centerfpinreceiving openings 1'?, 18 and 19 respectively. The openings 17, 18y and 19 are preferably of the same size and of. similar cross sectional outline. AAs most clearly illustrated in Fignres 4 and f5, each opening is of elongated cross sectional form, `the narrower Vpart of the opening being designated by 2O and the wider part by 21; The part 2O of jeach pin receiving opening has opposed walls 22 of cylindrical form whichV are concentric. The part 21 of each center pin receivingopening also has opposed substantially cylindrical walls 23-23 which are concentric with the walls 22-22 but Yoffset outwardly with respect to the same. As will be evident, the olfset'walls 23-23 of the pin receiving openings in effect form vertical slots at opposite sides ofthe pin recevingopenings, which term ,oef tle'partQl of said opening. As will be clear a pair of shoulders 25-25 are thus provided at opposite sides of the narrower part of the o ning 17.
The truc bolster is also provided with a pocket 26 beneath the pin receiving opening 18 thereof. The pocket 26 is in the form of a channel, defined by the vertical spaced webs 27-27 of the truck bolster. The width of the pocket 26 is at least as great as the diameter of the larger part 21 of the open- 1,8 and as shown corresponds in width to said diameter. Gpposcd shoulders 28-28 are thus provided at opposite sides of the narrower part 20 of the opening 18.

The shank 29 is of su stantially cylindrical outline in cross section and of such a diameter that it will fit within the narrower part 20 of the pin receiving 0 nings of the holsters. At the lower en t e shank 29 is provided with a pair of laterally projecting arcuate flanges 30-30 i at diametrica ly opposite sides thereof, which are adapted to cooperate with the shoulders 28 of the truck bolster. The flanges 30-30 m preferably of such a size that they will pass freely through the enlarged portions 21 of the pin receiving openings and will overlap the shoulders 28 when the member A is turned about its axis to an extent to register the Bauges 30 with the shoulders 28-28. The member A may be assembled with the body and truck holsters either by entering the same through the body bolster and passing the flanges -30 at the bottom end thereof through the laterally elongated portions of the pin receiving openings or by entering the same upwardl through the truck bolster and passing the anges 33-33 at the upper end thereof through the laterally elongated portions of said pin receiving openings.
The member B has a shank 34 which extends through the pin receiving openings of the holsters. At the upper end the shank 34 of the member B is provided with a substantially circular head 35 which bears on top of the flanges 33-33 of the member A. The head 35 is preferably of the same diameter as the head formed by the flanges 33-33 of the member A and is provided with an upstanding eye member 36 to facilitate handling of the member B in applying and removing the same. Adjacent the head 35, the shank 34 of the member B is of substantially the same diameter as the head 35 and the head `formed by the flanges 33 of the member A, fitting the larger part 21 of the pin receiving opening 17. The shank 34 is cut away at opposite sides, as indicated at 3T- 37, thereby providing vertically disposed grooves or slots adapted to accommodate the arms 32-32. At the lower end, the shank 34 is bifurcated, similarly to the upper end of the shank of the member A, thereby providing' a air of spaced arms 38-38 which embrace t e corresponding end of the shank ofthe member A and engage Within the grooves or slots 31--31 at opposite sides of said shank portion. At the bottom ends, the arms 3838 of the member B are provided with laterally projecting arcuate flanges 39-39 which fit between the flanges 30-30 at the bottom end of the member A and form a complete annular head therewith. The flanges 39--39 are of such a size that they will pass freely through the enlarged portions 21 of the pin receiving openings in assembling the member B with the body and truck bolsters. The major portion of the shank 34 of the member B corresponds in diameter to the narrower parts 20 of the pin receiving openings, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3, t-he upper end portion of the shank 34 immediately adjacent the head 35 only being enlarged as hereinbefore pointed out.
, In applying my improved center pin to the body and truck holsters of a railway car for connecting the same, the member A is first applied either by insertion through the truck or body bolster. Assuming that the member A is applied by inserting the same upwardly through the truck bolster, the lugs or flanges 33-1-33at the upper end of the same are registered with the larger parts 21 of the pin receiving openings and passed therethrough. serted, the same is given a turn about its axis so as to aline the flanges 33-33 with the' shouL ders 25-25 of the bodybolster. At the same time, the flanges -30 at the bottom end of the member A will also be registered with the shoulders 28-28 of the truck bolster. As
will be evident, theheads formed by the flanges at opposite ends of the member A will thus prevent separation of the body and truck bolsters. Instead of inserting the member A upwardly through the truck bolster, the same may be applied by passing the same downwardly through the body bolster, as herein before pointed out. In this operation, the flanges 30-30 of the bottom head of the member A are first brought into the alinement with the larger portions 21 of the pin receiving openings and passed downwardly through said openings. When the member A has been completely inserted, the same is turned in the manner hereinbefore pointed out to register the flanges at opposite ends thereofl with the shoulders of the body and truck bolsters respectively.
After the member A has been applied, thek locking member B is inserted through thc top of the pocket 24 of the body bolster, the arms 88 being entered into the pin receiving openings at opposite sides of the shank of the member A, the flanges 39-39 passing through the laterally enlarged portions 21 of the pin receiving opening. When the member B has been completely applied, the forked portion thereof embraces the shank 29 of the S member A at the lower end of the latter and the forked portion of the member A embraces the upper portion of the shank 34 of the member B, thereby interlocking the members A and B so that they are held against relative rotation with respect to each other. Inas much as the upper end portion of the shank of the member B fits the larger portion 2l, of the pin receiving opening 17, the member B is held against rotation with respect to the As the members A and B are interlocked, the entire pin is also held against rotation with respect tothe bodybolster.
`When t-he body and truck bolsters of the car are in transverse alinement, asy for example when the car is vrunning on straight track, the member A has shouldered engagement with both bolsters, thereby preventing separation ofthe same, the flanges 39-39 at the bottom end of the member B at this time F heing out of alinement with theshoulders 28 'of truck bolster. When the car is operated on curved track, the body and truck bolsters will be turned angularly relative to each other and inasmuch as the complete pin is locked against 28'-28of the'truck bolster, thereby assisting in locking the bolsters together. In this connection, it is pointed out that any tendency of the bolsters to separate in a vertical direction will cause a lifting of the head formed by the flanges ofthe member A, thereby also lifting the head 35 of the member B and bringing the flanges 39-39 at the lower end of the member B into engagement with the shoulders 28 of the truck bolster.
In separating the body and truck bolsters, the member B is first removed by lifting the same upwardly through the body bolster, thus withdrawing the same from engagement with the member A. After the member B has been removed, the member A may be freely rotated to register the flanges thereof with the portions 2l of the pin receiving openings. The member A may then be withdrawn either by lifting the same upwardly through the body bolster or dropping the same through the truck bolster.
From the preceding description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be evident that I have provided an exceedingly efficient and rugged center pin member of the -two part type, wherein additional strength is provided by a continuous head member, which is formed partly on each section of the pin. Further, maximum tensile strength opposing separation of the body and truck bolsters is had by providing means on both members ofthe pin for locking the same to the bolsters.
I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, but the same is mere-v ly illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of theV claims appended hereto.

In car construction, the combination with body and truckbolsters having alined center pin receiving openings, and each bolster having a shoulder adjacent its opening; of a connecting member having enlargements at opposite ends and having a shank portion extending'through the openings of the bolsters, the enlargements of said' member cooperating respectively with' the shoulders of the body and truck bolsterg'and a locking member having a shank portion extending through the openings of the bolsters and an enlargement at one end forming with the enlargement at the corresponding end of the first named member a complete annular head member cooperating with the shoulder of the corresponding bolster, said locking member and connecting member having shouldered engagement withy each other. to transmit the force from said locking member through the connecting member to the shoulders of the other bolster.

V'In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings; of a center pin member extending throughv said openings and having shouldered engagement at opposite ends with said holsters respectively to prevent separation thereof; and a locking member also extending through the openings of said holsters, said locking member having means thereon for locking said first named member a ainst rotation Wit-h respect to one of said ho sters while permitting relative rotation of the n and other bolster, said locking` member aving` shouldered engagement Withsaid first named member and with said leetnamedbolster when the latter is turned with respect to the other bolster.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having alined center pin receiving openings, and each bolstel' having a shoulder at the outer end of its opening; of a connecting center pin member having head elements at opposite ends adaptto engage the shoulders of said holsters respectively, the shape of one of said head elements and the cross section of said openings being such that said head element may he inserted therethrough while in one position but is' prevented from passing therethrough when given a partial turn; and a second connecting center `pin member having a shank portion extending through the pin receiving opening and having a head at one end bearing on the corresponding end of the iirst named member, and having a head element at the other end forming with the head element at the corresponding end of the other member a complets head member.

In car construction, the combination withibodv and truck holsters having alined center pin receiving openings, each bolster having a shoulder at the outer end of its opening; of a two art center pin member connesting said holsters, said pin having a two rt head at one end, the parts of said head ing respectively integral with said two members, said two part head cooperating with the shoulder of the corresponding bolster, one of said members having a head at the other end abutting the corresponding end of the other member and said last named member having a head at said last named end having shouldered engagement with the shoulder ofthe corresponding bolster, the shape of said last named head and the cross Section of said openings being such that said head may be inserted therethrough while in one position but is prevented from passing therethrough when given a. partial turn.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having alined center pin receiving openings, each bolster having a shoulder at the outer end of its opening; of a two part center pin member connecting said holsters, said pin having a two part head at one end, the parts of said head being respectively integral with said two members, Said two parthead cooperating with the shoulder of the corresponding holster, one of said members having a head at the other end abutting the corresponding end of the other member and said last named member having a head at said last named end having shouldered engagement with the shoulder of the corresponding holster, the shane of said last named head and the cross section of said openings being such that said head may be inserted therethrough while in one position but is prevented from passing therethrough when given a partial turn, said members being interlocked against rotation with respect to each other and locked against relative rotation with respect to one of said holsters, when completely assembled with the holsters.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having alined center pin receiving openings, each holster having a shoulder adjacent its opening; of a two part center pin, each part having a shank extending through the center pin receiving openings, said pin having a two part head at one end cooperating with the shoulder of one of said holsters, the parts of said head being formed integral with said shanks respectively, the shape of each of the head parts and the cross section of said openings being such that each of said head parts may be separate- 1y inserted therethrough While in one position, but is prevented from passing therethrough when given a partial turn, said nin having means cooperating with the shoulder of the other bolster, including a head member on the shank of one of said pin parts and means on the shank of the other pin part having shouldered engagement with said head member, said last named pin part being interlocked with the last named bolster to prevent relative rotation, and said pin parts being interlocked against rotation with respectrto each other.

In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having alined center pin openings, each bolster having a shoulder adjacent its opening said opening being elongated in cross section; of a center pin comprising a connecting member and a locking member, both of said members having shank portions extending through the holsters, said shank portions being interlocked against relative rotation, said connecting member having a head at one end thereof having engagement with the shoulder of one of said holsters, and said locking member having a head portion at the corresponding end hearing on said head of the connecting Y member, said pin having a two part head at the other end cooperating with the shoulder of the other holster, one part of said head being termed on the connecting member and the other part on the locking member,each of said parts corresponding in cross sectional outline to the cross sectional outline of the pin receiving openings, whereby each of said head parts will pass freely through said pin receiving openings When the cross sectional outline of the head part is alined With the cross sectional outline of said openings, said connecting member being displaceable With respect to the shoulders of the holsters to interlock the same therewith, the shank of said locking member having shouldered engagement With one of said bolsters to prevent rotation thereof with respect to the bolster, thereby also holding the pin against rotation With respect to said bolster.
8. In car construction, the combination With body and truck holsters having alined center pin receiving openings and each bolster having a shoulder adjacent the outer end of its opening; of a tvvo part center pin having head members at opposite ends thereof cooperating With the shoulders of the holsters respectively, each of the parts of the pin having a shank exten 1ing through the pin receiving openings, each shank having a portion thereof bifurcated and embracing the remainder of the other shank.
