Patented July 1, 1930 ANTHONY PETER: 31 011, or LATBOBE, PENNSYLVANIA RAI'IlnoAn IGHwliY 'cnossme Application filed I Ipvemter 1,1929; "Serial lfljoiii4j042Q This invention relates to an improved crossingof the type generally referred to in the art as ahighway crossing, such stru'c tures being provided to facilitate pasage of 5 vehicular traffic across railroad 'tracks;
-The invention has more specific reference to a sturdy part-metahcrossing, characterized by an assembly of rail bedplates andcomplemental' highway bed plates, together 10 with'novel and practicable supporting and fastening'appurtenances therefor,
V In carrying the invention into practice, I
have evolved and'produced a railbed assem-v 2 efiicient mannerwith the ties and rails;
' Other structural features, details, and ad'- Vantages accompanying the same will be come morereadily' apparent from the following. description and drawings.
Figure '1 is a topjfplan viewiot the com: plete structure as constructed in accordance with the presentinvention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view f' '30 taken approximately upon the plane of'the t'aken'on'the plane ofthe line 3 -3 of'Fig ureI. f g
F igure'et is a similar longitudinal elevational view with one of the rails removed to showtherailbed plate structureQ i i Figures 5. and}; are perspective views of the section of the supportingrstringers.
40 Figu e? S P an view of one of the details. 1 j Referring to Figure 2 it will be observed that thereference character 8 designates a conventional cross' tie while, the reference characters 9 represent the conventionaltrack rails.= The highway crossing is divided into two-principal sections, namely, the railbed plate assembly which is located between the track 'railsand the highway bed plate parts which-are located onopposite sides of the f Figure 3 isfa longitudinal sectionalviewtrack rails and in alinement with the highway; to afford approaches to the first named assembly. The rail bed assembly comprises a pair of companion plates 10 which are located between the rails 9 with their adjacent edges in'abutting relationship, these plates being supported in a plane substantially even with the tread portions of the rails. The edges of these plates 10 adjacent the rails are spaced therefrom to afford clearance channels as at 11 inFigure 2'to ac'commodatethe car. Wheel flanges (not shown). These plates 10 are bolted or otherwisefastened to the transverse supporting stringers and each stringer embodies a pair of companion sec-1 tions' 12' having their inner-ends cut and, joined together as at 13 in Figure 2 and having their outer ends formed with insulated extensions 14' to cooperate with the web portion of the rail, and to provide the, clearance channels 11 as described. a v Itwill be observed that I provide a series of threespaced parallel supporting stringers in" the present arrangement I also in? vite attention .to the fact that these are ad;-
justably connectedtogether by appropriate wear. take-up'means. For instance, as seen in Figure 2, associated with the'joint'13 with each stringer is a pair of L-shaped brackets "15 with which similarly shaped links 16 are connected, the links being joined.,"to
' gether through the mediumof a '.'nut equipped bolt 17. This affords a firm joint between the sections 12 of the supporting stringer. r
' The means for attaching the stringer to the rails 'issomewhat the same. For instance, the means at each end comprises'a bracket '18'of L-shaped design fastened to the adjacent end portion of the'tie" and carrying asimilarly shaped right-angularly disposed connecting link 19'with whicha retentionbolt2O is joined. s
This'bolt'bears against the web portion oftherail and constitutes an adjustable stop and retaining device. I t a The rail bed plate assembly also includes guard and approach devices at the opposite endthereof. In other words, as is shown which" are disposed at right angles to the adjacent stringers and which bridge the i complemental ties; Theseare fastened to .the' adjacent stringer =by. complemental V p brackets; 22 and 23'irespectiyely, ljhese' feet i V carry 'iriclinedgattaching platesjfl l on whic h the l giiardi' plate 1 is f bolted or otherwise plate 26 which. is arrangedfinf:flushmelationmain plate 10."
