SOCKET AND HANDLE Application filed February 24, 1928; Serial No. 256,669.

This invention relates to combined sockets and handles for lamp sockets.

An object of the invention comprehends a locking element carried by the socket adapted to retain lamp sockets against displacement therein.

Another object of the invention contemplates a stop carried by the handle adapted to engage the lamp socket Wires to prevent pulling of the latter from the lamp socket.

With the'above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a handle member having large and small communicating bores 11 and 12 axially aligned through the longitudinal center thereof and which are communicated through theinstrumentality of a tapered wall, stop, or seat 13, the purpose of which will be presently apparent.

A tubular member 14:, carried upon one end of the handle member 10 and having com munication with the bore 11, is. extended an appreciable distancetherefrom. Said tubular member being provided with spring fingers 15. Semi-circular clamping members 16 having laterally projecting ears 16f uponthe outer sides of the fingers are adapted to regulate the diameter of the bore of the tubular member at the outer end thereof to frictionally engage lamp sockets, such as indicated at 17. Adjusting' elements 18, passed through the ears 16, are adapted to regulate the tension of the fingers.

As has been frequently experienced, trouble lights or similar lighting fixtures having extension handles frequently become shorted within the sockets, due to the fact that the wires pull from the socket terminals when the feet become tangled in the Wire, or the same is tripped over.

To overcome this difiiculty, the cable, such as indicated at 18, passed through the smaller bore 12, is extended within the larger bore 11 and split to separate the terminal wires. The juncture at which the terminal wires deviate from the protective cover for thecable is Wrapped with friction or tire tape 19 to provide a substantial bulge and to prevent further tearing of the protective cover for the cable 18. Such cover is generally composed of fire resisting material and impervious, to moisture. The extremities of the terminal wires are connected to the posts in the sockets 17 and the cable 18 is retracted through the handle to position the socket 17 in the position as best illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. Considerable slack should be allowed between the bulge, formed by the.

successive layers of the friction tape wrapped upon the cable 18 is jammed or wedged Within the seat 13, and the socket 17. Jerks or pulls exercised upon the cable 18 will pull from the bulge formed by the successive wrappings or layers of the friction tape 19 instead of allowing the terminal wires to be pulled or broken from the socket posts.

As illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing, the terminal wires are sealed within the inner end of the socket 17 whereby the connections are rendered water proof and the invention may be effectively'employed under all weather conditions. i

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
