This invention relates to' certain new and useful improvements in umbrellas, the peculiaritiesof which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
5 The main objects of my invention are to provide ane umbrella that can be folded up so as to go in a'satchel, shoppingbag, or pocket; secondly, to avoid the usual braces for the ribs; thirdly, to afiord more head 1 room in the center of the umbrella; and I, p
in a boss 17 near one end and offset from the fourthly, to provide certain'nov'el features of construction hereinafter described and claimed, e V
In the accompanying drawing in-which like reference numerals indicate correspondline 22. of Fig; 1,. with the handle partly for ribs and handle, with folded positions indicated Fig. 6, a vertical section ofthe holder on i the line 66 of Fig. 5,.showing the ribs in position to be, folded and the covering in dicated by dash lines;
Fig. 7, an end view of the holder and ribs in folded position; and v I Fig. 8, a side View of the same.
The numeral l designates the usual or. an
, approved covering for'theframe of ribsand I handle mounted in-a holder 3. V g
This holder is oblong, of cast metal prefa straight portion and its ends bent upward handle as usual. The twoend rib sections'.-- 7 and 10are preferably loosely pivoted so as to'slide up on the bent-up ends of said rod ,erably, having a depending steel .rod 4 with.
in this construction. These rib sections havev .ed. to be stifiened filler. pieces connected 4:, and be held laterally in concave forks13 I and 14: respectively at the ends of the holder when in raised position, but are adapted'to slide down. tothe straight portion ofsaid rod and hang parallel to the other ribsin lowered position (Fig. 6). A flange 15 extends" outward and slightly downward on the sides and fork ends of the holder, adapted to-bear downward on all the ribs in raised position.
A handle 16 is slidingly mounted in a hole 0- central plane of the depending rod, and a spring catch 18 engages theboss when the holder is slid downward on the handle (Fig. 2), thus engaging the flange with the top of the ribs and tensioning the covering. This movement is thereverse of the usual umbrella frame, as my holder with the pivoted ends of the ribs is slid downward to tighten the covering, and upward'to loosen-it. p Y
My ribs are made in two or more sections, preferably tubular and connected by coil springs 19 or other flexible connections, pref- .erablyfof th'esame outer diameter as the tubes so as to be 'fluSh with theouter sections 20, as shown. I p H To stiifenthe ribs, a'filler 21 is slidingly mounted in each upper section of the ribs and is slid outward throughsaid flexible connection part way into the outer section, by a cord 22 having a hook 23 to engage the outer end of therib', and a terminal stop,-ball or other shaped-member 2 1 to pull the cord and filler to locking position against the tension of a spring 25 that connects the inner end of said filler to the pivot end of the rib. (Fig. 3.) The. retraction of said spring pulls the filler inward to unlocking position and the terminal stop-ball against the outer end of the .rib, when the hook is disengaged; 99 (Fig.4). f 1 The pivot ends of ribs 7 andlO, have holes curved and enlarged to slidingly pivot on the bent-up ends of the holder rod, the other ribs are also loosely: pivoted asshown in Figs. 3
and 4;, to allow them to assume, the positionsshownin Figs. Land 6. g
' The handle is also 1n Inultipletubular sec. tions, flexibly connected, andthe joints adaptby cord or wire, and the inner one controlled by a spring and the outer one provided with a cord and terminal stop-ball, similar to the ribs (Fig. 2). These terminal stops also form ornaments dangling from the drawnout cords (Fig. 2), and close the outer end of ribs and handle (Figs and 6).;
Fig. 6 shows the ribs m -ar ue flexible position hanging from the holder rod. These sections can then'be folded overingplanes;
parallel to each other (Fig. 7, shown reversed to facilitate such folding), with the outer sections hangin at the side of the holder as indicated a Fi 5. The seem-ea er the lrandle'are conveniently folded in one plane parallel to the holder and along the other sideas indicated in Fig.5 and shown in Figs.
The covering remains attached to the top of the handle'and is wrappedfaround the Ifol'dediseetions, making a small compact package adapted to be slipped into'any convenient bag or jother receptacle. As shown,
the ribs are .proporti onately larger than made, in order to show the construction earlye... -Thecoveringha'sfhooks26 or other means for securing lit {to the outerends of the ribs. "As my holder is slid outward on the handle libs for foldingor be provided with elastic connea ns27 tgme covering (Fig. '6) ,"if the conic a1. slant requires additional slack in the covering atlthe points of; attaehme'nt to {the outer ends of the 'ribs'. 'It is desirable that the;;covering. be always, connectedeither permanently fastened or fieXih1ysecured,- the; ribs, to facilitate opening and folding my umbrella. f
Iclaim: i a
