This invention relates to' certain new and useful improvements in umbrellas, the peculiaritiesof which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

A handle 16 is slidingly mounted in a hole 0- central plane of the depending rod, and a spring catch 18 engages theboss when the holder is slid downward on the handle (Fig. 2), thus engaging the flange with the top of the ribs and tensioning the covering. This movement is thereverse of the usual umbrella frame, as my holder with the pivoted ends of the ribs is slid downward to tighten the covering, and upward'to loosen-it. p Y

My ribs are made in two or more sections, preferably tubular and connected by coil springs 19 or other flexible connections, pref- .erablyfof th'esame outer diameter as the tubes so as to be 'fluSh with theouter sections 20, as shown. I p H To stiifenthe ribs, a'filler 21 is slidingly mounted in each upper section of the ribs and is slid outward throughsaid flexible connection part way into the outer section, by a cord 22 having a hook 23 to engage the outer end of therib', and a terminal stop,-ball or other shaped-member 2 1 to pull the cord and filler to locking position against the tension of a spring 25 that connects the inner end of said filler to the pivot end of the rib. (Fig. 3.)
