Actuation of the latch plate 21 to withdraw the bolt is arranged to be eected upon operation of the thumb latch 14 by means of suitable operative connections between the thumb latch and bolt. As here shown, the thumb latchv is ulcrumed in a bearing 31 provided in an escutcheon plate 32 associated with the lock and is provided with an inwardly extending lever portion 33. Pivotally mounted ona pivot pin 34 extending from he outer surface ot the casing and 18 is a belllcrank 35, the` later having one arm 36 slotted to env'age a pin 37 which extends from an adjacent portion 40 ot the latch plate through a slot 38 provided in the casing end i8, and having the other arm 39 arranged to be operatively engaged by the lever portion 33 of the thumb latch. ln this manner, it
will new be readily understood that depres- 4 sion of the thumb latch will cause the withdrawal of the bolt.
It will now be noted that in order that the lock may be used with equalreadiness in hight-hand or left-hand doors, a second pivot 34 for the bellcrank 35 is provided on the outer surface of the casing end 18 on the oppo-` site side of the slot 38. ln this manner, it will now be clear, turning the casing end to end in the door cavity 10 from the position here `shown and mounting thebellcrank on pivot 34 will allow a normal operation of the bolt by the thumb latch from the other 'side ot' the door, so that full reversibility of the lock is thus provided in a simple manner.
Operative movement of the latch plate is also arranged to be ellected upon rotation o1 the knob 13. ln the present embodiment, the knob 13 is mounted upon a spindle 41 having the outer portion thereof arranged to extend into the spindle cavity of the knob andto be i'eld fixed thereinby any suitable means, it being noted that knob'sof usual structuremay thus be used on the spindle. As here shown, theinner end portion 42 of the spindle is cylindrical and is mounted for rotative and `reciprocative movement in a sleeve 43 extending transversely outwardly'of and forming part Vof a plate 44 which is arranged to be secured to the casing shell 17 across its open end by means of the engagement of lugs 46 provided in the plate 44 and arranged Vto engagein L-'shapedslots 47 formed inthe shelledgait being noted that the plate may thus be secured to the shell without use of extraneous means such as screws orthe like. The spindle, it will be noted, is preferably, and as here shown, positioned axially of the shell 17 so that a desirable symmetry of structure may be produced. Y
Means are provided on the inner end of the spindle portion 42 for normally engaging the adjacent edge 48 of the plate 22 in such manner that rotation oi the spindle will cause the movement thereof to retract the bolt. As here shown, such means comprises a substantially semi-circular extension 49 formed integral with the spindle across its end and having its center ofcurvature in the axis of the spindle so thatits outer face will bear against the inner tace or' the plate 44 to prevent removal ot the spindle-through the sleeve 43. As here shown, the members 51 comprise rollers of equal size, it being noted that they areso positioned with respect to the Vspindle that one common tangent thereto parallel to their line of centers is diametral of the spindle and thatthe plate edge 48V normally engages them along such tangent. lt will now be noted that themembers 51 serve to provide a stop to limit thel forward movement of the latch plate, and since, as hereinbefore pointed out, the stop 26 on the bolt shank serves to limit tlieorward movement of the bolt shank through the plate 22, limitation of the 0utward movement of the plate and bolt is thus provided. To hold the latch bolt in its normally outward position, a spring 52 is preferably interposed between the inner end of the bolt shank-19 and the opposed portion ot the wall of the shell 17, while the plate 22 is arranged to be held in engagement with the members y51 by means of one or more springs interposed between it and the shell wall, a
pairor" helical'springs 53 being here shown conveniently mounted on the guide rods 23 for the purpose. In this manner, rocking ot the knobV and spindle in either direction will cause a'rocking of one of the members 51 against the latch plate edge 48tothereby cause a backward movement of the latch plate, `it being noted that-by reason of the bolt spring 52 and latch plate springs 53, the spindle will be normally so positioned that both rollers 51 will engage the adjacent side of the latch plate edge 48, so that a lixed relation of'the'spindle and extension will normally be maintained. lt will now be obvious that by preventing the movement of the latch plate, thelwithdrawal of the bolt. by operation of either the thumb latch ork knob wouldbe prevented, and since it is one of the objectsof the invention to cause the holding of the latch plate against movement by means operable from the insice yorknob side of the lock, the spindleV end porllO tion 49 is conveniently utilized in accomplishing such purpose. Accordingly, a transverse slot 56 is provided in the end ofthe spindle portion 49, said slot lying opposite the adj acent edge of the latch plate when the latter is its normal. position against the rollers. It will now be noted that whenthe spindle is rotated under normal conditions, the plate edge 48 ywill be permitted to move over the portion of the spindle end lying rearwardly of the rollers but that inward displacement of the spindle to cause engagement of the edge 48 in the slot 56 will preventan operative displacement of thelatch plate by either the thumb latch or knob. The'barrel 66, it will'be noted, is provided with a longitudinally extending perforation 72 near its periphery in which `a pivot piny 73 having the end thereof fixed to the link 71 is slidably and adj ustably mounted. Mounting for the bell crank 67 is provided by forming it to lit over the sleeve 43 which thus serves to provide a pivotal anchorage for it. Extending outwardly from the shank stop member 26 through the plate 44, is an eXtension 74, the plate 44 being provided with a slot 7 6 to permit the freereciprocation of the extension 74. lt will now be notedlthat the rotation of the barrel through a substantial angle'from the position shown in Figure 2 will cause'the movement of the lever arm 68 through 4such a distance that the extension 74 will be correspondingly moved to draw vback thev latch bolt, even thoughthe latch plate 22 be held fixed in the manner hereintermined-'relation betweenthe sides thereof, a
mounting means for the lock has been provided `which will permit such positioning ofthe latchbolt without effecting ythe structure either of thelock or latch. Accordingly, andas shown in the vpresent embodiment of the invention, the lock casing portion 16 is arranged toslidablyand justably engage a pair of lugs 7 7 secured to and extending from the rear face ofthe escutcheon plate 32through perforations 78 provided in the end 18 of the casing 16'whereby they may lie against vthe inner face of the' casingshell vthe provision orp slots portion 17. Cooperating means on the casing and lugs are provided for release-bly holding the casing in desired position on the lugs.v As here shown,
79 in the shell 17z through which the shank 81 oi lat headed screws 82 mounted in threaded engagement with the lugs extend, so that the shell wall may be gripped between the screw heads and the lugs when in adjusted relation. Cooperating means for holding the casing positioned are provided at the knob side of thelock mechanism. As here shown, such means comprises a mounting plate 84 having an Vedge portion 86 arranged to engage the door around the edges of the cavity 10 and a centrai portion 87 perforated to engage around the sleeve 43 of the plate 44. The sleeve 43 is externally threaded and a nut 88 is provided for threaded engagement therewith so that with the casing-fined on the lugs and the plate 84 in position, the screwing down oic the nut on the sleeve outside oi and against the plate 84 will clamp the door between such plate and the escutcheon plate and thus insure a firm positioning oli the lock in the door. By forming the edge and centralportions of the plate 84 in oiiset relation, ashere shown, the plate 84 maybe applied either with the portion 87 inwardly of the door surface as particularly shown in iiigured, or outwardly thereof, the plate beingapplied in the latter position for lock installations 1n Y very thin doors to provide the necessary clearance between the mounting plate 84 and the casing plate 44. A tace plate 89 is also provided which is arranged to be iixedlypositioned over the plate 84 and is provided with a sleeve portion surrounding the inner portion of the knob 13 in such manner that its` inner and outer positioning may be eiected without exposing the spindle 41 to view.
The embodiment shown in Figures 8 to 10 inclusive, comprises a lockl 101 particularly arranged for interior installations, bedrooms and bathrooms, where a key lock is not needed. rlhe lock of vthis embodiment is arranged to be normally operated from both sides of a door 102 by means of knobs 103 and 104. rlhe latch boltshank 106 and latch plate 107 associatedV with the lock are mounted in a casing 108 and are of similar structure to the corresponding members of the previously.described embodiment., The
casing, it will be noted,'comprisesV ac`ylinl drical shell 109 having one end plate 111 formed integral therewith and the other end plate 112 removably fixed thereto, both of said platesvbeing provided with outwardly ext-ending sleeve portions 113` and 114 respectively in which knob spindles 116r and 117 fixed to the knobs 103 and 104 are en-` gaged. The spindle 117, it will be noted, is
of similar structure to the knob spindle 41V of the previously describedembodiment, and
such means comprises as forV lacks a latch plate engaging groove and is thusnot arranged for longitudinal displacement. In this manner, the inward positioning oi the knob 104 will render both knobs inoperative to movethe latch plate, it being obvious that the knob 104 would 'be placed on the side of the door from which it is desired to perform the locking operation.
It will now be particularly noted that the bolt shank 106 forms a portion of a novel bolt structure. As here shown, the latch bolt 117 comprises the shank 106, a connecting stem 118 and an outer detent portion 119, the latter being preferably of rectangular section and presenting the usual bevelled face 121 on its exposed portion. One end of the stem portion 11S, it will be noted, is'arranged for threaded engagement in the portion`119,
`a lock nut 122 being utilized to secure these Y portions in adjusted relation. The other end of the stem 118 is arranged to engage and be held within a socket 123 provided in the outer end of the shank 106.Y As here shown,v
perforated face plate 126 whereby itmay bej guided and its rotation prevented when it is operatively disposed in the door edge. As
here shown, the plate 126 is provided withan inwardly extending guide plate portion 127 at the same side as the bevelled bolt-face 121,
while the under side 128 of the platejis-preferablycorrugated or luted as Vhere vshown to Y i prevent lateral. and rotative displacement of the plate when fixed tothe door by means of the screws V129. The Jioregoing described 1oolt structure is particularly valuable in installing locks, since with bolts of therusual types which Vare iiXed in length, their rst installation requires great care as to the exactpositioning of the lock mechanism associated therewith, and no adjustment is possi-v ble in the event of swelling, shrinkage, or warping of vthe door.V Adjustmentof the presentdevice, on the other hand, may be readily eilected by removing the plate 126 to allow turning of the outerbolt portion to release the stem i'rom the shank 106 and thus permit the removal of the stem and lbolt head assembly for relative adjustment.V It will v now be particularly noted thatthe bolt'structure (119-118-106) now described is preferably utilized inthe first described embodiment.V
` Since in roomssuch as bathrooms and sick rooms, it is frequently desirable that it be possible to unlock the door from the outer side, and since the lock ,nowl described lacks .of the lock.
a key operated mechanism for this purpose, means are provided for effecting such unlocking. As here shown, an arm 131 is pivotally secured to the casing end plate 111 adjacent its edge, said armbeing provided with a polygonal aperture 132 in its kaxial line which is arranged to receive a suitable member for rockingthe arm, such member being here .shown in the form of a thumbturn 133 mounted in and extending through the positioning plate 13de-nd faceplate l135 p A shank stopextension 136, it will now be noted, is provided for' engagement by the arm 131, so thatrocking 'of the thumb turn 133 may cause Withdrawal of the bolt even though the latch plate be locked in position. In this manner, opening of the door by turning the -knob may be prevented, yet deliberate turning of the thumb-turn 133 Will permit opening ofthe door, it being noted that the' opening means-thus provided correspondsy in its function tothe key lock mechanism of the previously described em bodiment. v p The embodiment of Figure 11 is a modification ofy the preceding embodiment and differs therefrom chiefly in the lock of any means for openingthe lockeddoor from the outside. It Will be noted that in'this, as in the preceding described embodiments, that the bolt is freely retractible when pressure is exerted directly on it. But since With the spindle 117 in locking relation to the latch plate 147, a door might be slammed shut With no one on its inside to release the lock, means are provided for preventing such contingency. As here shown, the spindle end portion 141 lying between the rollers 142 is bevelled toward the bolt side thereof, and the incline thus provided is arranged to be engaged by a pin 143 adjustably fixed on the bolt shank in opposed relation thereto in such manner that if the spindle be in its inner position and the bolt is pressed inwardly, the spindle Will be forced outwardly to its unlocked position, so that in this manner, accidental locking of the door is prevented. y
It will now be particularly noted that the hereindescribed lock structures of my invention all include the performance of the locking function by means of a longitudinal positioning of a spindle knob, and that the majority of parts used in the various embodiments are common to all,.so that a minimum number of parts need be manufactured and a change from one type to the other is simply effected. i

In a lock of the class described, a nor mally extended latch bolt, a movable latch plate operatively engaging said latch bolt, manually operable means arranged to effect the movement of said latch plate to Withdravs7 said bolt, means arranged to be set by and upon .an appropriate manipulation of said first means to prevent said movement of vsaid latchv plate, and means permitting the inward movement of said bolt independently of said latch plate.

Vnormally extended latch bolt, a bolt operatvtion to said iirst plate and said casing, andV means cooperating with said casing and second plate whereby said latter plate may be urged toward said first plate to clamp said door between said plates and tensionally position said casing between them.

bolt `operating mechanism including a. latch plate; a normally extended retractible latch bolt operable by said mechanism and comprising a latch plate engaging portion, a headv portion, and an intermediate connecting portion, said portions being longitudinally aligned; means adapted to securesaid intermediate portion of said bolt to said head portion in adapted fixed relation thereto; means plate operatively engaging said latch bolt, a spindle normally rotatable and arranged to -actuate said plate upon a rotation thereof,
means vpermitting an axial displacement of said spindle from the normal position thereof to a second position, and means operative upon the positioning of said spindle in said second position to ixedly secure said latch plate and thereby render said spindle inoperative. Y
14. A lock of the class described and in accordance lwith claim 13, having detent means yieldingly securing the spindle in each 'of its positions.-

In'aloclr of the class'described, a normally extended latch bolt, a reciproca-ble latch plate actuatable to withdrawsaid bolt, a spindle longitudinally adjustable between a pair `of limiting positions, and cooperatively en'- gageable means on said spindleV and latch plate whereby when said spindle is in one of said positions a rotation thereof is permitted for withdrawing said bolt and when said spindle is in the other of said positions said spindle and latch plate are interlocled against rotation and reciprocation respectively.
