CLOCK Filed July 7, 1928 Patented July 1, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JUDSON L. MOTT, OF AD'RIAN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR 'IO MERGHANTS ADVERTISING COMPANY, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN, A PARTNERSHIP COMPOSED OF JUDSON L.
MOTT AND JOHN E. MOTT croox Application filed July 7, 1928. Serial No. 291,000.
This invention relates to an improved clock, and more particularly to the type of clock which is adapted to be hung on the wall of a room and which is provided with a pendulum. i I
The general object of the invention is to provide. a'clock which may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost and which will,-
nevertheless, be of attractive appearance and which will be a reasonably accurate time keeper.
More specifically, the invention includes a case which is preferably made, either wholly or largely, of wood and which is constructed with a'view to economy both in labor and material. The face of the clock overlies the case and may be of any desired style or design.
The specific construction of the invention, together with the advantages thereof, will be more particularly explained in the following detailed description, which is to be read in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating the same in its preferred form.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention as seen'from a point in front of the same.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention as seen from a point above and in rear of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the housing which encloses the clock movement.
Figure 4 is a perspective viewsimilar to Figure 2 but showing the housing in as sembled position, a portion of the latter being broken away. i
In carrying out the invention, the clock movement 5, which may be of any size and quality desired, is secured by screws or the like to the rear surface of a clock face 6.. The clock movement includes the usual escapement having a depending hook 7 from which the pendulum 8 is hung. The case includes side rails 9, which are spaced apart and diverge downwardly, forming the sides of a sector within which the pendulum swings. These rails 9 are secured to the back of the face 6 below the movement 5, and are also se cured to a backboard 10 which is adapted to rest against the wall.
The face and case may be made from any suitable material, preferably wood, and the face overlies the sides of the case and is designed to harmonize with the style of the case and its surroundings. The front of the face and the front of the back board 10 are adapted to receive any kind of surface ornamentationor advertising matter.
The movement 5 should be covered by a housing 11, preferably of sheet metal. This housing, as shown in Fig. 3, is substantially cylindrical in shape and is formed with a flange 12 which may be secured by screws or the like to the rear surface of the face 6. The lower part of the flange 12 is cut away, as shown at 13, to permit the housing to be fitted against the upper ends of the rails 9 and back board 10, which are cut to correspond to the curvature of the housing 11. The housing is also provided with a slot 14 through which the pendulum is attached to the hook 7.
The clock casing may be made of wood at a very moderate cost, especially when made in large numbers, and the clock is very easy to assemble. It is particularly adapted to be given away as a premium with merchandise orto be sold at an extremely low price for advertising purposes. The pendulum re,- ceives substantially the same protection from the side rails 9 as if it were completely en closed in a rectangular case, and yet the cost of the case isconsiderably less and it has a more novel and attractive appearance. The housing 11 affords protection for the clock movement and may be very easily removed for the purpose of oiling or cleaning the same. I
While I have shown and described in detail the preferredembodiinentof-the invention, it is to be'understood thatthis ismere ly illustrative and that the various parts thereof may be considerably modifiedwithout any material departure from the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is g 1. In aclock, the combination of a front face, a movement supported behind the same and including a pendulum, and a case extend-- ing downwardly beneath said movement, said case being open at the front and having a back boardwith downwardly divergent side rails secured thereto, between which the pendulum may swing.
Q. In a clock, the (0111' nation of a front face, a movement supported behind the same and including a pendulum, and a case extending downwardly beneath said movement, the upper end of said case being behind said front face and secured thereto, said case consisting of a back board and two downwardly divergent side rails, between which the pendulum may swing.
3. In a clock, the combination of a front face, a movement secured to the back thereof and including a pendulum, a housing for said movement, said housing being secured directly to the back of said front face and having a slot in which the pendulum may swing, and a case secured to the back of the front face and depending below the same, the up per end of said case being cut to it against the lower wall of said housing.
1. In a clock, the combination of a front face, a movement secured to the back thereof and including a pendulum, a housing for said movement, said housing being secured directly to the back of said front face and having a slot through which the pendulum depends, and a case secured to the back of the front face and depending below the same, said casing being open at the front and having a back board with downwardly divergent side rails secured thereto, between which the pendulum may swing, the upper end of said case being cut to fit against the lower wall of said housing.
5. In a clock, the combination of a front face, a movement secured to the back thereof and including a pendulum, a housing for said movement, said housing being secured directly to the back of said front face and having a slot through which the pendulum depends, and a case secured to the back of the front face and depending below the same, the upper end of said case being behind said front face and secured thereto, said case consisting of a back board and two downwardly divergent side rails, between which the pendulum may swing, the upper end of said back board and side rails being cut to fit against the lower wall of said housing.
6. In a clock, the combination of a front face, a movement secured to the back thereof and including a pendulum, a metallic housing for said movement having a slot through which the pendulum depends, said housing having a peripheral flange secured directly to the back of said front face, and a case secured to the back of the front face and depending below the same, the upper end of said case being cut to fit against the lower wall of the said housing, said flange being cut away where the upper end of the case abuts said housing.
7. In a clock, the combination of a front face, a movement secured to the back thereof and including a pendulum, a metallic housing for said movement having a slot through which the pendulum depends, said housing having a peripheral flange secured directly to the back of said front face, and a case seecured to the back of the front face and dependin below the same, said case being open at the ront and having a back board with downwardly divergent side rails secured thereto, between which the pendulum may swing, the upper ends of said back board and rails being cut to fit against the lower wall of said housing, said flange being cut away where said back board and rails abut said housing.
8. In a clock. the combination of a front face, a movement secured to the back thereof and including a pendulum, a metallic housing for said movement having a slot through which the pendulum depends, said housing having a peripheral flange secured directly to the back of said front face, and a case secured to the back of the front face and depending below the same, the upper end of said case being behind said front face and secured thereto, said case consisting of a back board and two downwardly divergent side rails, between which the pendulum may swing, the upper end of said case being cut to fit against the lower wall of said housing, said flange being cut away where the upper end of the case abuts said housing.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
