Description

July 1, 1930. J. KOZIEL 1,768,988
WRENCH Filed May 6, 1929 Patented July 1, 1930' cense JOHN KOZIEL, OF ROTHSCHILD, 'WISCONSIN WRENCH Application filed May 6, 1929. Serial No. 360,852.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide a wrench with means allowing the proper operation of nuts of a smaller diameter than the wrench head chamber.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a wrench adapted for the operation of nuts of varying diameters and of simple and inexpensive construction, yet durable and efficient in operation.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a wrench having a'chambered head one of the walls of which are formed with a depression for the reception of a movable body engaging nuts of smaller diameter than the wrenchlhead in order to allow their operation thereon by said wrench.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of awrench having a head adapted to engage and operate nuts of smaller size than the head and further adapted to be attached to various types of handles.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully apparent, as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be specifically defined in the appended claim. i
In the accompanying drawing forming a to material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary sectional, front elevation of a wrench head equipped with nut engaging members, and constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation. illustrating the attachment of a wrench head constructed according to my invention to a brace handle.
Fig; 4 shows another form of handle for the wrench and its head.
Fig. 5 shows a further modified wrench handle and head. i
As illustrated on the drawing, the wrench head 10 has a neck part 11 formed therewith suitable for attachment to a handle 12.
In the lower part of the head 10 a chamber 13 is formed preterably'hexagonal as shown, and in one wall of the chamber a depression 14- is formed for the reception of a lug or pair of superposed lugs 15 and 16, the upper preferably longer than the other, lower one and both lugs are preferably U-shaped in crosssection with rounded back and straight front faces. A pin 17 connects the lugs and the inner end of pin 17 is embedded in a bore of the neck 11 with the outer end of the pin engaging the lower ,wall of chamber 1 1..
In Figures 3, 4E, and 5 various forms of handles for the wrench are illustrated with which a head constructed according to my invention is to be used, for instance a brace handle 18,
(Fig. 3) or a straight handle 19, with an eye 20 (Fig. 4) or a handle 21 having a bent end 22 (Fig. 5) all handles to be fastened to the respective head 10 in the customary manner.
The operation of my device will be quite clear from the above description and by inspection of the drawingpand it will be evident that upon engaging the nut to be operatecl on, the engagement between nut and the lugs will turn the same about their pivot pin to properly grip the nut.
If the wrench engages a nut which is smaller in size than the diameter of the chamber 13, the lug or lugs turn about the pin and assume the position illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2 so that the wrench can efiectively grip and operate the nut.
It will be understood that I have shown and described the preferred form of my device as an example only of the many possible ways to practically construct the invention and that I may make such changes as come within thescope of the appended claim without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A wrench including a chambered head hav- U-shaped cross-section arranged in superposition in said depression the upper lu longer than the lower one, rounded bac s and straight front faces on said lugs, and a pin connecting said lugs to turn about the same, said pin arranged in the upper and lower walls of the chamber in said head and said lugs adapted to engage and clam smaller size entered into the chem er of said head firmlyv into the same.
Signed at Rothschild, in the county of Marathon, and State of Wisconsin,.this 12th day of April A. D. 1929.
JOHN KOZIEL.
