Description

June 24, c. s PQWELL a FORE END FOR SHOTGUNS Filed Sept. 30, 1929 In venior I A itorney Patented June 24,. 1930 v umrso STATES CHARLES s. rownLLfor MAooir, ivrrssovar' FORE END FOB SHOTGUN S Application filed September 30, 1929. Serial No. 396,329.
The present invention relates to a fore end designed particularly for use for automatic loading shot guns and has for its prime object to provide a fore end which is cast of aluminum in a one piece structure and takes the place of the usual wooden fore ends now in use.
i or
The important advantages of the aluminum fore end resides in. the durability thereof, and in the lightness and cheapness.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of an alumi-- num fore end for automatic loading shot guns which has integrally formed thereon pins at the bottom end and a curved rib also formed integrally therewith so that the bottom end may be held in place.
A further important object is to provide Figure 2 1s a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the fore end.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a conventional or any preferred form of automatic loading shot gun and the numeral 6 denotes my improved aluminum fore end. The general shape of this fore end is conventional and adapted for use upon the more popu- I comprising a metallic elongated trough shaped body and a stop ring cast integrally in said body intermediate its ends and lar makes of shot guns.
By forming or casting the fore end from aluminum it will be seen that the same may be cheaply manufactured and will possess the desirable features of lightness and durability as contrasted with the comparatively heavy fore ends now used made of wood which are very fragile particularly when the shot gun falls and the fore end hits an 7 object or the like.
' The constant strain on the fore end by the guide ring of the barrel striking the fore endupon each return of the barrel after the recoil also causes the same to eventually spring split at'the bottom end thereof and this is eliminated by providing the aluminum fore end with a stop ring 7 cast integrally within the trough of the fore end intermediate its ends. This stop ring serves as an abutment for the barrel guide ring 8 when returned to its reloaded position by the recoil On the bottom end of this fore end there is formed the integral arcuate rib 10 and a pair of. integral pins 11. The rib 10 and the pins 11 are used in the usual manner in supporting the bottom end of the fore end to the gun in conjunction with the usual means 12.
It is thought that the construction, utility, and advantages of this 'invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. 7 g g The present embodiment of the invention -in its features of shape and size has been illustrated in detail merely for the purposes of exemplification and it is apparent that suitable changes may be made within the scope of the claimed invention to adapt the fore end to all makes of shot guns now in common use regardless as to size.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A fore end for repeating shot guns comprising a metallic elongated trough shaped body and a stop ring cast integrally in said body forming an abutment for the barrel guide ring of the gun.
2. A fore end for repeating shot guns forming an abutment forthe barrel guide ring of the gun.
3. A fore end for repeating shot guns comprising a trough shaped body having a transverse member intermediate its ends to form an abutment for the barrel guide ring of the gun.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
CHARLES S. POWELL.
