The section 25 of the grill has its openm 26 protected by a barred closure 37 an this closure may be connected by means of conductors 38 -"-m-- circuit with a source of current 39 a high tension coil 40 being .1n-. cluded in the circuit so thatthecurrent assin" throu h the barred'closure 37 will e of relhtivcly hi 'h voltage. Included ,in circuit with the high tension coil 40 bymeansof a conductor 41 is a normally 0 en switch42, a conductor 43 connecting this switch with electrified. I I
The shaft 36 is operated by a motor 46 and this motor is connected in'circuit with a plurality-of switches 42 by means of' a conductor 47 and the conductor 44, .while interposed 'in this circuit is a switch 48. This last mentionedswitch .isnormally open and comprises a; gear '49 which carriesan arcuate' contact 50. This contact is connected with the motor by a conductor 51,
. while the conductor '41 is connected with a-spri-ng contact '52 which wipes against the arcuate contact" 50. The from a pinion 53 which is mounted upon the shaft 36. Thus when any of the switches 42 are closed, a circuitwill'beclosed'throu h the motor 46'-so that the shaft'36 will e operated to raise'the rod 32 as previously described, and' in-a'ddition', close a circuit through} the "motor? and through the grill closure 37 forarperied determined by the length of the contact I I The switches 42'are connected in parallel andfeach includes a stationary contact 54 anda-movable 'contact- 55. The contact 55 extends downward from a common joper'ating'b ar 56 which is yieldingly heldagainst downward movement by springs' '57, so that the switches 42. will benormally open.
Inflorder. to protect employees behind the grill 25',' the' invention provideshorizontally disposedspaced panels 53." ,iflhese fpanels are positioned aboye-thegrill and-extend horizontallyuandhave their opposite ends movable :in guide rails 59. These'guiderails are-provided'iwith slots .60,- 61' and-j 62 which receive-the ends-of the panels,'.and' as shown in Figure 5 of the-fdrawings,tli eseslots are of different lengths, so=tha't when the panels move downward within the slots they, will .ment within grooved guides 66. T
gear 49 is driven be so placed as to provide a complete closure across the grill 25.
In order to hold the panels elevated, the latter are rovided at their up er edges with shoulders 63. These shou ders are adapted to be engaged b spaced hooks 64 which depend from a sh e 65,-=the latter being'mounted for horizontal sliding moveiisslide isprovided with an openin 67 at one end for the passage of a" vertically movable rod 68 and thelatter is provided with an inclined portion 69.
B reference to Figures 5, 13, 14 and 15 of tie drawings it Wlll be seen that when the rod 68 is moved upward, the slide 65 will be moved outward due to its inclined ortion 69 and the hook 64 will be moved rom the osition shown in Figure 13 to the :a' shaft 72.v This last mentioned shaft is disposed at right angles to the shaft 36 so as to control the panels at the end of the counter. The. rods 68. are provided with springs 73 which yieldingly resist upward movement. w
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that when one of the bars 56 is depressed, a circuit will beclosed through the motor '46 and through the barred'closure 37. Operation of the motor will release the closure 127 3116. will in addition release the panels 58 so that the-closure 27 will close the opening'24' in the-bullet-proof section of the superstructure and the panels .58 will close "the openings in the grill 25. Employees behind the counter-will-thus' 'be protected,
while the 'bulle t proof glass portion of the superstructure will afford a view. of the customers side of the counter.
In addition, the windows 17 may be closed by metal grills or screens 74 and these grills gor' screens may be connected in circuit with the'hi'gh tension coil 40 through the conductors' 75. The window screens-or grills may be suitably grounded as indicated at 76 so as to provide for a return of current.
- Theentrance'16 may be provided with a vestibule 77 and the outer end of this'vestib'ule may be provided with swinging doors vided with swinging doors 79 which as shown in Figures 1 and 6 of the drawings areadapted to be swung in opposite direcfrom which extends tangentially tions. To provide for this, the vestibule at its inner end is provided with a 0st isposed ribs 81 with which the doors 79 are adapted to engage. Normally, the post 80 which is rotatable, is positioned as shown in Figures 1 and 6 of the drawin s so that one door will open outwardly and the other inwardly. Offset stops 82 are provided adjacent the post 80 so as to limit outward swinging movement of one door and inward swinging movement of the other door, whereby, when the post 80 is rotated in a clockwise direction in Figure 6 of the drawings, the ribs 81 will engage upon the side ed es of the door opposite the stops 82 and hold the doors closed.
To acomplish the foregoin the invention provides an operating mec ianism which is housed within a compartment 83 positioned above the vestibule. The post 80 extends into this compartment and is rovided with a rcctan ular extremity 84 w iich is engaged by the orkedend 85 of a slide rod 86. A spring 87 acts to resist slidin f7 movement of this rod in one direction and yieldingly holds the fork 85 engaged with the post.
Positioned within the compartment 83 is a bell crank lever 88. This lever is pivotally mounted as shown at 89 and has one of its arms extendingthrough the housing of the compartment 83 and provided with a depending portion 90 to enga 'e one of the doors 79. The other door (9 which is adapted to swing inward is engaged by a finger 90' which projects through an areaate opening 91 provided in the housing of the compartment 83 so that this finger extends into the vestibule to en 'age the door 79. The finger 90' is carried by an arm 92 which is pivotally mounted within the compartment 83 as shown at 93, and when this arm is moved to the left in Figure 7 of the drawings, the inwardly swinging door 79 will be closed against its stop 82 and when the bell crank lever 88 is swung inward, the outwardly swinging door 79 will be moved against its stop 82.
In order to effect this movement, the bell crank le"er 88 and arm 92 are connected to an even-er 94 by means of flexible connections 95, the latter passing around guide pulleys 96 and being provided with extensible sections 97 to compensate for difference in movement. The evener 94 is guided upon the rods 98 and is yieldingly held against movement in one direction y springs99. A cable 100 is connected to the evener and passes around guide pulleys 101 and' is adapted to be wound u on a drum 102 WhlCh is mounted upon the s aft 72; Thus, when the motor 46 1s energized to rotate the shaft 36, the shaft 72 will be likewise'rotatedto exert a pull upon the cable 100 and move the v doors 79 to closed position as previously described.
The slide bar 86 has connected thereto one end of a flexible member 103 which passes around a guide pulley carried by the evener 94 and has its opposite end connected to an arm'104 .which is rigid with the 0st 80. The flexible member 103 is sufciently slack to permit the doors 7 9 to reach a closed position before the slide bar 86 is disengaged from the post. As soon as disengagement occurs however the flexible member 103 will swing the arm 104 ninety degrees and position the ribs 81 upon the opposite edges of the door 7 9 as previously mentioned. A spring 105 returns the ribs to the position shown in Fi re 6 when tension on the cable 100 is relieved, a. stop 106 limiting movement of the arm 104 in one direction.
As rotation of the shaft 72 is controlled by the operation of the motor 46, the doors 79 will be'closed simultaneousl with the operation of the protecting device, so that persons upon the customers side of the' counter will be prevented from leaving through the doors, while the window 17 will be protected by the high tension current passing throu h the screens 74.
The invention is susceptible of various chan es in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properlyfall within the scope of t e appended claims. 4
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
Combination with a door frame, and single doors hingedly mounted at the opposite sides of the frame one to swing inwardly and the other outwardly, a fixed stop arranged in the path of swinging movement of each door to prevent swinging thereof in the direction opposite to that intended, a lpost mounted for rotation upri ht midway etween theopposite sides *0? the .door' frame, longitudinally extending ribs extending tangentially from the post at the opposite sidesthereoito engage the free edges of the respective doors, at the sides thereof opposite thefsides which enga e the fixed stops, when the doors-are closed, means opera'ble to close said doors, and means operating automaticall torotate the post toefi'ect enga ement of t e ribs thereon with the respective doors u on completion of the closin movement 0 the doors.
