Description

June 24, 1930. H. H. KEET/ON VEGETABL'E SLICER f/ Filed Sept. 13, k1928 Patented June 24, 1930 UNrr This invention relates to a vegetable slicer and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind whereby potatoes and the like may be readily and conveniently 5 sliced and in a manner obviating waste.
' Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind comprising two members supported for reciprocation one with respect to the other, one of l said members constituting the cutter and the when not in use. The side marginal portions other the holder, the same being constructed and assembled in a manner to permit the device to be manually operated with conven- HENRY H. l use within the household.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved vegetable slicer whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
TENT oPrcs or other vegetable to be sliced is initially positioned within this cup 2 as will hereinafter be more particularly referred to.
One end portion of the plate l has depending therefrom a transversely disposed flange land adjacent to said flange 4 and in relatively close proximity thereto the plate l is provided with an opening 5 whereby the device in its entirety may be readily suspended of the plate l are defined by the depending flanges 6, the free marginal portions of which being formed, as at 7 to provide inwardly The member B has its side marginal portions defined by the depending flanges 8 which engage within the trackways 7, said flanges 8 coacting with said trackways 7 to maintain the member B in close Contact from above with the plate l of the member A. The member B also comprises a plate 9 of a length substantially equal to the length of the plate l and is provided at one end with an eX- tended portion l() herein disclosed as rounded in the form of a sleeve or barrel to provide an effective handhold to facilitate the oper- Tnorder that my invention may be the ation of the device. The opposite end porbetter understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a view in top plan of a vegetable slicer constructed in accordance with an cm bodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially central of the device as illustrated in Figure l;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in plan of the cutter member removed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my improved slicer comprises two members A and B, the member A constituting a holder and the member B the slicer or cutter.
As herein embodied the member A comprises a sheet of material formed to provide a substantially flat body plate l of desired dimensions and which has pressed outwardly at its central portion a cylindrical flange or cup 2 defining an opening 3. The potato tion of the plate 9 is provided with an opening 5 which,when the member B is fully closed with respect to the member A, registers with the opening 5 and through which the supporting or suspending member is also adapted to be inserted. This supporting member may be a nail or other device suitably anchored to a wall or kindred support.
The plate 9 at a desired point inwardly of its inserted end has disposed transversely thereacross a slot 11 of a length in excess of the diameter of the opening 3 in the plate l of the member A and terminating beyond opposite sides of such opening 3. The plate 9 inwardly of the slot 11 is depressed, as at l2, so that the outer edge a defining the slot ll constitutes a cutting edge and the thickness of the slice cut from a vegetable, such as a pot-ato, will be in accordance with the depth of said depressed portion 12. portion 12 is disposed transversely of the plate 9 for a distance substantially equal to the diameter of the opening 3 and extends from This depressed 2 mesma the slot 11 to the inner or inserted end of the plate 9.
A vegetable to be sliced is placed within the cup 2 with the applied plate 9 serving as the bottom for said cup. As the members A and B are relatively reciprocated the cutting edge a carried by the plate 9 will slice the vegetable as desired, each slice being ejected forwardly through the slot l1 as assured by contact of the vegetable with the wall of the cup 2 and by contact of the portion of the vegetable being sliced with the stop shoulder lt carried by the plate l of the member A and snugly engaging the depressed portion 12 of the plate 9 of the member B. This stop shoulder 14 is preferably formed by depressing the plate l, as at l5, at a point closely adjacent to the opening 3 in the plate l and between the cup 2 and the opening 5.
rlhis stop shoulder le is also of advantage as it permits the entire vegetable to be sliced as it prevents what may be termed the tail portion of the vegetable from being carried out of the cup 2 during the cutting or slicing stroke.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a vegetable slicer constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
l. A vegetable slicer comprising two members, means for connecting said members for z reciprocation one with respect to the other,
said members comprising plates, the plate of one of the members being provided with an opening defined by an outstanding flange to provide a cup, the plate of the second member serving as the bottom of said cup and having a transversely disposed slot, the portion of the plate of the second member to one Side of the slot being depressed, the margin of said plate of the second member defining the slot remote from the depressed portion constituting a cutting edge, and means eX- tending within the depressed portion of the plate of the second member to assure discharge of a severed slice through the slot.
2. A vegetable slicer comprising two members, means for connecting said members for reciprocation one with respect to the other, said members comprising plates, the plate of one of the members being provided with an f opening defined by an outstanding flange to provide a cup, the plate of the second member serving as the bottom of said cup and having a transversely disposed slot, the portion of the plate of the second member to one side of the slot being depressed, the man gin of said plate of the second member deiining the slot remote from the depressed portion constituting a cutting edge, and a stop shoulder carried by the plate of the first member extending within the depressed portion of the plate of the second member.
3. A vegetable slicer comprising two members, means for connecting said members for reciprocation one with respect to the other, said members comprising plates, the plate of one of the members being provided with an opening defined by an outstanding fiange to provide a cup, the plate of the second member serving as the bottom of said cup and having a transversely disposed slot, the portion of the plate of the second member to one side of the slot being depressed, the margin of said plate of the second member defining the slot remote from the depressed portion constituting a cutting edge, and a stop shoulder Carried by the plate of the first member extending within the depressed portion of the plate of the second member, said stop shoulder being positioned closely adjacent to the cup.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
HENRY H. KEETON.
