PIPE BENDING TOOL Filed Jan. 20, 1928 .By@M it.
Atfomg Patented June 24, 1930 V UNITED stares JOSEPH F. HEER, or wasnxneron, PENNSYLVANIA:
rlrnnnnnlive 'roon Application filed January 20,1928. Serial no." 248,168 r f This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pipe bending tools and aims to provide a simple and etliciently operating device for use in the bending of all characters of pipes and this without requiring unusual effort or skill on the part of the operator.
In carrying out the invention there is pro-' vided generally a pipe engaging annulus to which the pipe is adapted to be secured at two spaced points, means being provided for drawing the pipe at one point in engagement partially around the annulus, resulting in the bending thereof In the drawing where in like reference characters indicate corresponding throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pipe bending device. Figure 2 is an edge elevation thereof. Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged cross section of the annulus per so taken substair tially upon the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure t is a fragmentary view partially in section disclosing a ratcheting means provided for operating the threaded draw bar associated with said annulus and to'which the pipe is secured at one point sothat when parts the bar is drawn in a certain direction the pipe wlll be caused to bend. around the annulus, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary section taken substantially upon the line 55 of Figure 1 and looking in the direction of the arrow for more clearly disclosing the connection between the draw and said annulus.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, my novel plate bending device consists of a heavy metallic annulus 5 formed at its outer periphery with. a pipe receiving channel6 and formed at its inner periphery with a rib 7, the edge of which rib is provided with circumferentially extending hook shaped slots 8. i r
Formed integral with the annulus 5'and extending tangentially from opposite sides thereof are spaced arms 99 formed adjacent their outer ends with registering'open- 'ings through which are loosely'arranged opposite pivot pintles l010 of a draw bar medium .ofachain'or'cable 21. the pipe A is connected adjacent its lower guide collar 11, said pintles being secured against displacement from said arm openings through the medium ofcotter pins 12 arranged through openings in the pintles at the outer sides ofsai d arms as clearly disclosed 5 in Figures land 5. i p
Loosely guided through'this collar 11 is a threaded draw bar 13 that extends inwardly above the annulus 5 and that is formed at its outer end with an eye 14, $9.
Threaded upon the drawbar 13 outwardly of the 'collar 11 isa feed collar 15, the inner side 'ofwhich is formed with anextension sleeve 16 for engagement with the said collar 11, previously described. V i This collar 15 is of the spaced flanged variety and between the flanges it is'provided with ratchet teeth 17, while arranged uponv the collar between said flanges" isthe ring end 18 of a hand lever 19 that is equipped 9:
adjacent thefring with a spring ratchet dog 20 for ratcheting engagement with the said collar ratchet 17, This structure however is generally conventional, and I do not desire to be limited to the elements disclosed insomuch asdepartures may be hadtherefrom without affecting; the invention. 7
In actualpractice a pipe sectlonA 1s arrangediagainst the channeled surface of the annulus 5 remote from the annulus arms 9-9 s i and substantially parallel therewith. The eyedend 14 of the draw bar l3 is then securedto one end ofthe pipe Athrough the 7 Similarly end with the annulus through the medium of a chain 21 engaged at one end around the pipe A andat its inner end with one of the hooks 8 of theannulus. v The lever 19 is then operated for drawing the bar l3 through the guide. collar '11 obviously pulling upon the upper end of the pipe A which Wlll bend the same around the annulus. 'After this end of "the pipe has been bent it may be reversed upon the annulus that is the bent end can be arranged around the annulus beneath the arms of the annulus and secured thereto after which the draw bar 13 can be secured to the unb ent ends of the pipe by manipulation of thelever' l9, thisend of the pipe is caused to bend around said annulus. By reason of this operation the pipe may be bent into substantial U-formation if desired.
In view of the foregoing description when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that I have provided a highly novel, simple, and extremely useful pipe bending device that-is well adapted' for all the purposes heretofore designated, and even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without affecting the spirit and scope of the appended claims. I
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.7 A pipe bending device of the character described comprising an annulus having its periphery grooved to receive tangentially a pipe to be bent, means whereby the pipe may be secured to the annulus, means associated with the annulus whereby the pipe may be bent to conform with the curvature of the annulus, said means for securing the pipe to the annulus consisting, of a ribprovided on the annulus, said rib being formed with notches to provide hooks, and a tie member adapted to engage one of said hooks and the pipe.
2. A- pipe bending tool of the character described comprising an annulus forming,
a pipechannel at its outer periphery and against which the pipe to be bent is to be arranged, means for securing one end of the pipe to the annulus, means having one end Gull associated with the annulus and its opposite end attached to the other end of the pipe, whereby the pipe may be bent to conform to the curvature; of said annulus, said means comprising a draw bar provided with threads and pivotally connected to the said annulus, and feedin means whereby the bar may be fed in direction for binding said pipe against the annulus.
, In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
