ELECTRIC ILLUMINATION FOR TENTS Filed April 29, 1929 Patented Jun 24, 30
'* j UNIT-ED s'rATEsj PATENT OFFICE ERICK FAIBiANKE, OFNBERLIN-SCI-IYONEBERG, GERM Y ELECTRIC ILiiUMINATION FOR TENTS a v Application mean rn 29,
The illumination. of tents, used frequently by scouts and for other purposesandwh ch have to be put up and removed continuously, is not very practical. V I
This invention has for its object to solve the illuminating [problem in a; practical. manner. \Vith thisobjectin 'view an elecztrici, battery. is inserted in the central post of the tent in-a cavity in the head portion of the same under the top, sleeve with the carrying stud, said battery being connected in a simple manner with a removable lamp holder so that, when this holder is being removed from the post, the circuit -is lnterrupted and closed againat the reinserting of the holder so that the lamp is lighted. I
The tent post is notjaltered and remains as strong as before, the bending-tortion-and buckling'momentsbeing even increased by the telescoped brass 'sleeveqwhich forms a chamber in which the battery andthe lamp connection are accommodated. The holder for thelamp has no projections exceeding the vdiameter of the tent post, and theaperture through which the lamp has tobeinserted can be closed,,when the lamp is re-. moved, by rotating the brass sleeve on the tent post. 1 An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by Way of examplev in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 shows in sideelevat1onpartly 1n section the tent post with the battery and incandescent electric lamp. 7
Fig. 2 shows in front elevation the tent post with lamp holder and reflector.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the tent post at the point where the reflector 18 mounted. I i a Y The tent post lis fittedlas usual w th the top sleeve 3 having an upwardly directed stud '2 on which the canvas has to be attaohed. Between the top sleeve 3 and the tent post 1 a brass sleeve 4 is inserted which has an aperture 7 and a laterally projecting pin 5 adapted to engage with the bayonet slot 6 of the top sleeve 3. In this brass sleeve 4 an electric battery w (dry cell) is battery being connected'to the contacts 9 mounted, the electrodes Sand 10 from the 1929. Serial No. 359,131.
and 15. When the lamp holder 13 is in: serted, a downwardly directed extension 14' of the same grips behind thecontact spring 15, the contact ofthe lamp holder 13 bearing against the contacting spring 9 so that 65 g brass sleeve rotatably mounted on the upper end of said tent post whichhas a cavity in its upper portion, said brass sleeve having.
an aperture, a laterally projecting .pin on said brass'sleeve, a top sleeve of said tent post having a bayonet slot in its lower edge adapted to engage over said laterally pro jectin'g :pin, an upwardly projecting stud on the top end of said top sleeve adapted to holdthe 'tent canvas, a dry battery in said cavity of the tent post havingtwo electrodes, a a contact spring connected to one electrode arranged behind the aperture in said brass sleeve, a contact spring on the outer surface of said brass sleeve connected to the other electrode of said battery, a lampholder, an
incandescent lamp in said lamp holder, a '80 reflector on said lamp holder,'and adownwardly extending contact springon said'refiector said lamp holder withreflector designed to be inserted through said aperture of said brass sleeve so, that the circuit through said lamp is automatically closed at the inserting ofthe lamp holder and au-' tomatically interrupted at the removing of I said lamp holder. g
'2. An electric illumination for tents as claimed in claim 1, comprising in'combination with the tent post having a cavity for a dry battery and with a rotatable brass sleeve having an aperture for the insertion of an incandescent lamp with holder, said brass sleeveadapted to be rotated on said tent post when said lamp holder has been removed so that said aperture is closed. .In testimony whereof I alfix my signature.
