PORTABLE ELECTRIC STAND LAMP.
Application filed September 16, 1825. Serial No. 56,582.
This invention relates to improvements in means of a screw 25 to the socket of the portable, self-contained electric lamps comprising an interchangeable battery in its foot part, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide the lamp stand near its foot part with a rotatable sleeve'or ring for closing or breaking the lamp circuit.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a portable battery lamp equipped with means for allowing a dimming of the light.
A further objectof the invention is the provision of a lamp of this type of simple and inexpensive construction, yet durable and eiiicient.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be specifically defined inthe appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a lamp constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the lamp foot after the removal of the battery, showing the lamp cut out.
Fig. 1 is a similar view with the battery in place and the lamp cut in.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the lamp dimmer.
The lamp according to the present invention comprises a foot part consisting of an outer shell 10 and an inner insulated housing 11 in said shell carrying at its upper end the stand 12 equipped at its upper end'with the usual socket 13 for the reception of the lamp 1 1 and carrying the removable shade 15.
Vithin the foot partllthe springs 16 for securingthe dry battery 17 are arranged, and the contacts 18.
Near its lower end the stand is surrounded by a short, rotatable sleeve orring 19 having at its lower end two oppositely disposed depending flanges 20, 21 extending into the lampvfoot. To the flange 21 a pin 22 is secured adapted to contact upon the rotation of the sleeve 19 with a metal strip 23 con nected to or made integrally with the foot contact 18.

In order to limit the rotation of sleeve 19, one of the flanges, 20, is equipped with a notch 26 adapted to be engaged by a metal strip 27 or the like, upon the engagement be tween pin 22 and strip 28 (Figures and 4:).
In the position of the sleeve 19, illustrated in Figure i, the current from battery 17. is lead to the lamp by means of the wire 21%, and the lamp will start to glow, while upon the rotation ofthe sleeve 19in the opposite direction, the circuit will be interrupted by the disengagement of pin 21 from the metal strip 23. In order to allow a dimming of the light, a resistance 28 is provided within the lamp stand 12 and is connected by means of a wire 29 to asuitable switch 30 allowing a cutting in or out of c cult of the resistance.
It will he understood, that I have disclosed herein as an example the preferred form of lamp and that such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims may be made in the construction of the minor details thereof without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Let ters Patent is: v p
1. In a portable electric lamp, the combination of a hollow foot and stand, a rotatable sleeve on said stand, and projecting into said foot, said sleeve being formed with depending flanges, one of said flanges being formed with a notch, a metal strip depending from said hollow foot into the line of motion of said flanges, to enter said notch of the specific flange upon the rotation of said sleeve for limiting the rotation of the sleeve.
2. A means for opening and closing the electric circuit for a portable electric lamp, of the class described, comprisinga hollow foot and stand, a sleeve rotatable on said stand, and projecting into said foot, said sleeve being formed with a pair of depending flanges, one of said flanges being formed with a notch on its lower edge, a contact,
strip depending from said hollow foot into the line of motion of said flanges, to enter the notch of the said flange upon rotation of the said sleeve, limiting its rotation, another contact strip depending from said hollow foot into the line of motion of said flanges, and a contact fastened to the other of said flanges, contacting with last mentioned contact strip, simultaneously wit-h first mentioned contact strip engaging the said notch.
3. A means for opening and closing the electric circuit for a portable electric lamp, of the class described, comprising a hollow foot and stand, a sleeve rotatable on said stand, and projecting it into said foot, said sleeve being formed with a pair of depending flanges, one of said flanges being formed with a notch on its lower edge, a contact strip depending from said hollow foot into the line of motion of said flanges, to enter the notch of the said flange upon rotation of the said sleeve, limiting its rotation, another contact strip depending from said hollow foot into the line of motion of said flanges, and a pin fastened to the other of said flanges, contacting with last mentioned contact strip, simultaneously with first mentioned contact strip engaging the said notch, both of said contact strips depending from said hollow foot by means of intermediate springs.
