UNITED J. CARMICHAEL AND ALBERT M. WU'NDERLICH, OF NEW HAVEN, OONNECT- IGUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE GREIST MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A OGRPORATION OF CONN ECTIGUT SEWING-MACHIIQ'E-AT'I'ACI-IMENT HOLDER Application filed Decante- 29, 1927. Serial No. 243,350.
This invention relates to a holder for sewing machine attachments by which various attachments may be conveniently secured to the 'presser-footof a sewing machine. The improved attachment holder preferably consists of a clamp comprising two jaws adapted to engage the horizontal or vertical portion of a sheet metal presser foot, said jaws being preferably forced together for a clamping operation by means of a thumb screw passing loosely through the upper jaw and tapped in the lower jaw. Integral with this clamp is an extension to which an attachment or attachment support may be secured in any proper manner, as by rivets.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. l is a side view of one form of the improved attachment holder, showing the same in operative relation to the presser foot of a sewing machine, with the braider or corder mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the attachment holder looking from the right of Fig. 1, with the part of the presser foot engaged by the clamp insection. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the attachment holder shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the braider or corder omitted. Fig. 4 is a plan View of an approved form of the improved attachment holder with a binder mounted thereon. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the attachment holder with an 'edge-stitcher guide attached thereto. Fig. 6 is a plan View of the attachment holder shown in Figs. 1 and 5, without any attachment. Fig. 7 is a section on line ?7.'
Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a View similar to Fig. 2, showing a cam lever for forcing the jaws of the clamp together. Figs. 9 and 10 show a form of clamp extension adapting the clamp to be attached to the vertical part of the presser-foot, and F igs; 11 and 12 illustrate a form of clamp similar to that shown in Figs. 9 and 10 but adapted to engage a sew ing machine presser-bar. 7
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes the foot portion of a sheet metal presser foot of well known form, and 13 denotes the upper horizontal part of the shank of saidpresser foot. The improved attachment holder comprises a clamp 16 having upper and lower jaws, and, integral with the lower jaw of plication Serial said clamp, in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 8, inclusive, is a depending part 17 having at its lower end'an'integral horizontal extension 18, these parts 17 and 18 constituting an integral extension to which a sewing machine attachment may be secured. Passing loosely through the upper of said clamp, and tapped in the lower jaw thereof, is a thumb screw having a knurled head 19. A washer 20 will preferably be interposed between the shoulder of the thumb screw and the upper jaw of the clamp 16.
To prevent displacement. of the holder relative to a presser-foot shank to which said holder isto be secured, and to facilitate the positioning of the holderon the presser-foot CPI shank, the jaws of the clamp 16 are preferably provided with shoulders 27- which engage the sides of the presser-foot shank 13, as clearly shown in the drawings.
In Fig. 1 a braider or corder 21 is shown as being mounted upon an inclined support 22 the lower horizontal part of which is shown as being riveted tothe horizontal ex-f' tension 18.
This braider or corder forms no part of the present invention, the same being fully shown and described in our ap- No. 225,916, filed October 13,1927.
Fig. 4- shows the improved attachment holder adapted for supporting a binder attachment 28, this form of the holder being the same as that represented in Figs. 1, 2 and?) excepting that the horizontal extension 18 at the lower end of the depending portion of the clamp member is provided with a lateral e'Ktension'18 on which the binder support24. is mounted.
Fig. 5 shows an edge 'stitcher guide 25 mounted on a holder of the same form asithat illustrated in Fig, 4, the holder illustrated:
' in Figs. 4c and 5 being'shown in plan in ing said lugs, thisconstructionpermitting v by plate springs slight lateral adjustments of the parts 2 and 25, said parts being frictionally held in place 28 beneath the heads of the rivets 26.
Fig. 8 is a View similar to Fig. 2, but shovw ing a cam lever 19*, instead of a set screw, for closing the jaws of the clamp 16 together. Figs. 9 and 10 show a construction of clamp adapted to engage the vertical portion 19 of the presser foot 12 by virtue of the fact that the extension 1'? is in line with the clamp instead of being at right angles thereto as in the construction most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Figs. 11 and 12 show a form of clamp similar to that illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 but with the jaws of the clamp made in'suitable form for embracing a sewing machine presser bar 29.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides an efficient sewing machine attachment holder adapted to be secured toa presser member of a sewing machine and consisting, except for the set screw or cam lever, of a single piece of sheet sewing machine attachment may be supported, said clamp comprising two jaws adapted to receive between them a part of a sheet metal presser foot, and means by which said jaws may be closed together, said jaws having shoulders tov prevent displace ment of the holder.
5. A one-piece sewing machine attachment metal (preferably steel) so that it may be made at little expense.
Having thus described our invention we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A one-piece sewing machine attachment holder comprising a clamp adapted to embrace a sewing machine presser member and consisting of two integral sheet metal jaws, said clamp having, integral therewith, an extension to which a sewing machine attachment may be secured, combined with means for forcing the jaws of said clamp towards each other in rigidly affixing said clamp to the presser member. H
2. A one-piece sewing machine attachment holder comprising a clamp adapted to embrace a sewing machine presser member and consisting of'two integral sheet metal jaws, said clamp having, integral therewith, an extension to which a sewing machine attachment may be secured, combined with means for forcing the jaws of said clamp towards each other in the presser shoulders to prevent holder.
3; A one-piece sewing machine attachment rigidly affixing said clamp to member, sald jaws having displacement of said "holder consisting of a clamp havingan in- ;tegral depending part provided at its lower end with a horizontal extension by which a sewing machine attachment may be supported, said clamp COIHPIlSlIlg two jaws adapted to receive and means by 4. A one-piece sewing machine attachment holder consisting 01 a clamp having an integral depending part provided at its lower end with a horizontal extension by which a between them a part of.
