SEWING-MACHINE RUFFLER.

This invention relates to that class of sewing machine ruifling attachments in which the rattling blade is actuated from an operating lever forked forengagement with a pin or stud on the needle bar of a sewing machine, and the invention has for its object to provide a convenient re ulating construction whereby the throw of the ruffiing blade may be varied, as may be desired, or may be rendered inoperative when it is desired to do plain sewing. 'The invention as herein illustrated is shown as being applied to a sewing machine rufller which, excepting for the regulating means, is essentially the same the rather of the Greist patent No. 665,519,

Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes an upright portion of the frame, affording a standard, and said frame also comprises a presser foot portion 13 having a forked upper part 14 adapted for attachment to the presser bar of a sewing machine. Pivoted to the standard 12 is an opearting lever 15 forked for engagement with a pin or stud carried by the needle bar of a sewing machine, and also pivoted to said standard is a pendulous arm or lever 16 having a jointed connection with a slide 17 carrying the ruffling blade 18.
Removably attached to the standard 12, by a screw 19, is a holder 20 to which is attached the separator plate 21, said holder having a slotted portion 22 serving as a guide for the strip to be rufiled. Attached to the presser foot portion 13 of the frame is a slotted edge guide 23.
All of the parts thus far described are or may be essentially the same as the miller of said Greist patent, No. 665,519, exceptlng that the operating lever 15 and the pendulous lever 16 have been changed somewhat to accommodate the improved regulating 50 means.
In the present improved rufiier the throw of the ruflling blade is varied by means of an adjusting or regulating lever 24 pivoted to a forwardly extending offset portion of a depending part 25 of the operating lever 15, said depending part of said operating lever having a slot 26 through which passes apin 27 secured to an offset portion 24 of said regulating lever. The pendulous arm or lever 16 is constructed with a downwardly tapering opening 16 the opposite walls of which serve as contacts for the said pin. By varying the position of the said regulating lever the pin 27 maybe raised or lowered in the said opening in the pendulous lever so as to bring it nearer to or farther from the center of movement of the operating lever and also of said pendulous lever, and also so as to bring it into a wider or narrower portion of the said opening in the pendulous lever, thereby afiordin'g more or less lost motion between the operating lever 15 and the pendulous lever 16 from which latter the ruffiing blade is reciprocated, so as to vary the throw of the said rufiiing blade. The levers l5 and 16 are both pivoted on the rivet 15 so as to have the same center of movement.
The regulating lever is provided with a struck-up lug 28 adapted for engagement with a series of notches 29 on the operating lever 15, so that said regulating lever may be secured in any desired position of adjustment relative to said operating lever. Said regulating lever is of thin spring steel so that said lug may be readily engaged with or disengaged from said notches. The said operating lever is preferably provided with a scale 30 comprising a series of numbers for the diiferent notches, for convenience in determining any desired position of the regulating lever.
When the regulating lever is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawring the rufliing blade will be given its greatest throw, the pin 27, fixed to said regulating lever, being by this time in the narrowest part of the opening 16 in the pendulous lever 16 and farthest from the center of motion of the operating and pendulous levers. If, however, the said regulating lever be moved to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l the pin on said regulating lever will occupy a position so near to the center of motion of the said levers and into the widest portion of the opening in the said pendulous lever that the lost motion be-' tween the said operating lever and the said done.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the present improvement comprises simple means for regulating the throw of the ruflling blade of a sewing machine rufflter, said regulating or adjusting means being simpler and less expensive in construction than the regulating or adjusting means heretofore employed in the particular class of rufllers to which the present invention is shown as being applied.
Having thus described our invention we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a sewing machine rufller, the combination with a frame portion having a standard, of an operating lever pivotally mounted on said standard and having a depending portion provided with a forwardly extending offset part and a slot, a pendulous arm or lever also pivotally mounted on said standard and constructed with a downwardly tapering opening, a ruflling blade carrier jointed to the lower end of said pendulous arm 01' lever, a rufiling blade fixed to said carrier, a regulating lever pivoted to said forwardly extending offset portion of said operating lever and having in turn an offset portion, a pin fixed to said offset portion of said regulating lever and extending through said slot into the said opening in the pendulous lever, and means for securing the said.
