Description

A. MCARTHUR.
INVALID BEDSTEAD. No.176,540. Patented AIM-i125, 1876.
LL l
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
ANDREW MGARTHUR, OF SOUTH CHENANGO, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID-BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,540, dated April 25, 1876; application tiled January 22, 1876.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW MCARTHUR, of South Uhenango,in the county of Grawl'ord and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Invalid Bedstead, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a platt'orm, pivoted longitudinally and transversely in a frame, so that the patient can be tilted upright or sidewise, as muy be required for comfort, and on the lower part areindependentjointed supports for each leg, with bandage appliances, and a windlass and straps for extending the lug in case of fracture or dislocation, While the upper part is provided with a bedwith edges suitably formed to be strapped around the body ofthe patient, and in the middle portion are armrests, contrived for adjusting to different positions for the comfort of the patient when elevated by tilting on the transverse axis.
Figure lis a plan view of my improved bed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on line .t x of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail section on lille y y, Fig. l, showing the contrivance for locking the pivots of the platform when it is not required to be tilted.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the platform, which is mounted on the longitudinal pivots B and transverse pivots C, in the frame D, and the pivots are so arranged that, by withdrawing the sliding support E, at the foot, the legs can be lowered and the body raised on the transverse pivots, and by releasing either of the transverse pivots in the saine way, the platform may be tilted sidewise. On the upper portion ofthe platform is a bed, F, with marginal portions G, which will bend up around, the body of the patient in case it is desirable to fasten the body by straps H, going down through theslots I- in the platform. The lower portion of the platform is provided with the adjust-able leg-supports J, which are hinged to it at K,Iand jointed together at L, and have slots for bandages at M. At the lower end the platform has a series of notches, N, in which the foot ends of the leg-rests are set, to elevate the leg more or less. These 'leg-rests have adjustable stud-pins O at the lower ends, for the support ofthe bottom of the foot, and they also have thumb-screws, P, for screwing into the platform at different places, to hold the leg rest-s. Q is a crank-shaft, at the foot end of the frame, for working a rope or strap, 1t, for extending the leg. S represents the adjustable armrests, applied to the platform each side of the leg-rests.
An opening may be made through the platform above the transverse pivots, for the convenience of patients too ill to be removed with Comfort.
The sliding keepers E, for holding the pivots of the platform, are kept in position by a key, T, which is taken out when they are to be removed to tilt the platform. U represents hooks, by which to fasten the platform when tilted.
Having thus described my inventioml claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The platform A, pivoted longitudinally and transversely to the frame D, andv having sliding or removable supports E, for the pivots, whereby the platform is allowed to tilt in the manner described.
2. The combination of the bed F, having flexible margins Gr, with the platform A, substantially as specified.
3. The removable supports E, combined with the pivots of the platform, substantially as specified.
4. The crank shaft Q, combined with the rope or strap R, and adjustable leg-supports J, substantially as specified.
ANDREW MGARTHUR.
