The invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand fire extinguishers, and more particularly to the type of fire extinguisher wherein the fire extinguishing compound is thrown from the container for extinguishing a fire.
An object of the invention is to provide a supporting means whereby a container of the above type may be suspended in any readily accessible place by means which is detachably connected to the closure for the container, and so disposed relative thereto as to positively remove the closure when the container is pulled upon.
A further object of the invention is to providea suspending means for the fire extinguisher of the above type, which is 1n ring form with an integral tab adapted to be used for supporting the closed container,
.20 and wherein said ring is placed between a portion of the closure and the container so that when said container is pulled upon, the ring will pry the closure from the container body.

The invention is directed to a hand fire extinguisher comprising a container body and a closure which is preferably frictionally held on the container body so as to seal the container body, but so as to be readily detachable therefrom. The container body is provided with an apertured top portion formed with a friction seating wall all the way around the opening in the top. The container body is closed by a closure having a centrally depressed portion adapted to engage said friction seat on the top for sealing the container and hold-v ing the closure firmly on the container body.
The closure has a projecting flange overlying the top. Located beneath the flange and surrounding the depressed portion of the closure is a metal ring which is provided with an integral tab extending verti-. cally above the outer edge of the closure. This'tab is located substantially in the plane of the outer wall of the'container body, and is used for supporting the container. The container body is supplied with thefire extinguishing" compound, and by pulling on the container body, the
closure is removed therefrom so that the. 'container'body is opened and the contents.
3. This apertured top is formed with a depending vertical flange 41- forming a friction seat. The container body is closed by a cover or closure 5 which is provided with a centrally depressed portion 6 adapted to engage the vertical friction. wall 4 for firmly securing theclosure to-the container body and for sealing thesame. The closurei s provided with a flange 7 which overlies the top of the container body. This flange extends to a point substantially in line; with the; inner wall of the container and'is folded u'nderneathas indicated at 8.
The invention is directed particularly to the means for supporting a-container of the above type.- This means consists of a metal ring 9 havinga central opening 10 therethrough. The'edge of the ring adjacent the opening 10 is slightly turned upwardly as indicated at 11 in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The top of the container is slightly depressed within the double seam, so as to form a housing or recess for this ring. The ring, is provided with an integral tab ,l2 which'is perforated at 13, and this tab is with the fire extinguishing compound, the
fire extinguisher then is suspended from a suitable device adapted to. extend through the perforation 13 in the tab 12. In case of fire, the body portion of the container is seized and pulled upon. This ,will cause the ring to pry the closure from the container body. It is well known that when removing the friction closure from the container, it is a. great advantage to start the movement of the closure on its friction seat at substantially one point in the circumference of the friction seat. In effect, this is what is accomplished in the present struc ture. lVhen the container body is pulled, the ring will be held rigidly from movement directly beneath the suspending means for the tab, and this will cause the portion of the friction seat in the region of the support to move on the closure. In other words, the force which separates-the clo- ,sure' from the container is at the extreme outer edge of the ,closureand substantially at one side of the closure. The force, however, will continue all the way around the closure,'and the ringtwill positively separate the closure from the container, It is noted that this ring isentirely independent of the closure and container, and is confined to the assembled container and closure by the placing of the closure in the container. After the parts are assembled with thering between the closure flange and the containerbody, it serves as a positive means for separating the closure from the container body,

A hand fire extinguisher comprising a container body having a top with an opening therethrough surrounded by a substantially vertical friction wall, a closure having a central depressed portion adapted to engage said friction wall, and a flange overlying the top of the container and terminating within the limits of the outer wall of the container, a flat metal ring surrounding said central depressed portion of the closure and located beneath the flange thereof, said ring having a projecting neck portion extending beyond the edge of the flange and a vertically extending supporting tab formed integral therewith and disposed substantially in alignment with the wall of the body of the container, said tab having a perforation be suspended by said tab and the cover withdrawn from the container by apull exerted on the body portion of the container.
